French industry to descend on La Rochelle to premiere high-end drama series to the world.

Disney+’s French original Irrésistible, Canal+ legal drama Conviction, TF1’s Behind Closed Doors from Coda producers’ Jerico TV and Swedish thriller Evil are among the French and European titles that will premiere at France’s Festival de la Fiction, taking place in La Rochelle from September 12-17.

The event, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2023, has long been a popular ‘back-to-school’ festival for the French industry, with a strong focus on French series, Its international appeal is growing and it has become a significant launchpad for European content.

Dark comedy also stars Christopher Læssø and Anders Matthesen.

Frederikke Aspöck has started filming on her dark comedy De Frivillige, which stars Jacob Lohmann, Søren Malling, Christopher Læssø and Anders Matthesen in the lead roles.

The film, written by debutant Lars Husum, follows a celebrity financier and jet-setter who is taken into custody. Following a brutal assault at the hands of a gang of bikers, he ops for voluntary solitary confinement, during which he joins a pirson choir and sets his mind to reaching the top of its hierarchy.

Exclusive: Danish drama The Man has sold to China as one of several deals closed by the sales outfit.

Swedish sales company Sf Studio has sold Danish drama The Man [pictured], directed by Charlotte Sieling, to China (Lemontree Media), Mikkel Munch-Fals’ comedy-drama Swinger to South Korea (MediaSoft), and Hallward Braein’s comedy action film Borning to South Korea (Micon).

Starring Soren Malling, Jakob Oftebro, Ane Dahl Torp and Soren Pilmark, The Man had its world premiere at the recent International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Iffr Live section. The story is about a wealthy, well-known artist whose son suddenly shows up out of nowhere, disrupting his comfortable lifestyle and turning out to be the world-famous graffiti artist ‘The Ghost’.

Swinger is about 40-year-old Adam who feels his life is over until he falls in love with a young girl in the only place where no one should fall in love - a swingers’ club. The film stars...

The live stream of the European Film Awards from Berlin this evening was pretty spotty, but a few fine moments came through, particularly the moment when a special honorary award was inaugurated and presented to a very surprised Michel Piccoli by Volker Schlöndorff and Bruno Ganz.

Another special award was given to producer Mariela Besuievski, Stellan Skarsgård presented the European Achievement in World Cinema Award to Mads Mikkelsen, and Stephen Frears received this year's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Melancholia, The Artist, Le Havre and the other nominations for the 2011 European Film Awards have been announced. The 24th Annual European Film Awards are presented “by the European Film Academy to recognize excellence in European cinematic achievements. The awards are given in over ten categories of which the most important is the Film of the year. They are restricted to European cinema and European producers, directors, and actors.” This year’s European Film Awards “ceremony will be held on December 3, 2011 in Berlin’s Tempodrom near Potsdamer Platz.”

The Canadian film “The Whistleblower” won the Audience Award while France’s official Oscar entry “Of Gods and Men” took the Fipresci Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year at the 22nd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which announced its winners over the weekend.

The festival, which concludes today, screened 205 films from 69 countries, including 41 of the 65 foreign language entries for this year’s Academy Awards.

Said festival director Darryl Macdonald in a statement, “It’s been a hugely successful year for the festival, with record attendance, incredibly smooth operations, and much higher numbers of filmmakers and industry guests attending, with a marked jump in film sales activities as a result. Everything, from our film lineup to the stellar Awards Gala honorees, to our Talking Pictures events and our tribute to Michael Douglas, have been warmly embraced by audiences and industry alike, marking this as a banner year for us.

Kudos to the AFI Fest for setting up an important sidebar that will expose the best that the next generation of filmmakers have to offer. Bumping up their crop of exciting new auteur cinema, sections labeled "Young Americans" and "New Auteurs" (Cannes heavy) are showcases you'll want to keep an eye on - I can vouch on a good chunk of titles already selected. Among the half dozen included names in "Young Americans" section we find a pair of filmmakers in Alistair Banks Griffin and David Robert Mitchell who were included in our own American New Wave 25 feature this summer. Two Gates Of Sleep, one of my top discoveries of the year from this year's Cannes will finally receive its North American premiere. Madrid -- Fifteen films from 17 countries including the United States, Romania, China, Chile and Denmark will contend for the €90,000 ($120,000) Zabaltegi-New Directors Award at next month's San Sebastian International Film Festival, organizers announced on Monday.

Representing the U.S. will be debutante director Shawn Ku's "Beautiful Boy" starring Maria Bello and Michael Sheen as the parents of a youth who carries out a mass shooting at a university.

Two films from host country Spain are also in the lineup: "Blog", by Elena Trape, about a group of upper middle-class girls with a secret plan, and "Stars to Wish Upon", by Mikel Rueda, which tells the story of a mother who loses her child in the Spanish Civil War.

Other western European productions include France's "Elsewhere" by Frederic Pelle; the Belgian-German co-production "Marieke, Marieke", by Sophie Schoukens; "Dusk", by Dutch director Hanro Smitsman, and from Denmark, Mikkel Munch-Fals' "Nothing's All Bad.
