We had the opportunity to chat with Martin Gero, who, together with his partner and collaborator, Brendan Gall, created Keep Breathing, currently stealing time from Netflix binge-watchers.
Mr. Gero is also the man behind bringing Quantum Leap back to NBC, and we chatted about both shows and much more in great detail.
Enjoy!
You're a really busy man.
Yeah. I like to work.
I can tell.
It's a privilege to do what we do, so I'll take the opportunities when I get them.
Blindspot was such a huge success.
Yeah.
What challenges have you faced creating new content in its wake?
Well, I just don't want to repeat myself mostly. I mean, I've been tremendously lucky to have such a weird disparate career. I started in really hard sci-fi and then did like strange -- we called it like a "noir-otic" -- with Bored to Death and then like a really trashy,...

For TV critics, this week’s theme is less-buzzy new versions of some of the buzziest shows of the past year. It will be a fun game to see how many reviews discuss Peacock’s The Resort without mentioning HBO’s The White Lotus in the first paragraph (when the more apt comparison is actually Apple TV+’s Acapulco) or Amazon’s Paper Girls without mentioning Netflix’s Stranger Things (when the more apt comparison is actually Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club).
The answer may be close to “zero.” (I won’t even try when it comes to Paper Girls.)
I have at least successfully avoided mentioning Showtime’s Yellowjackets until several sentences into my review of Netflix’s Keep Breathing, a so-called limited series that is unquestionably most easily described as a one-woman version of Yellowjackets without any of the sensationalistic — or “fun,...

There's no doubt that consumers of entertainment have a thing about plane crashes.
The idea that one minute, you're on a journey of a lifetime to the next, scrambling to survive, makes for excellent drama and character introspection.
Keep Breathing hopes to combine a survival drama with the introspection that comes when your life almost passes you by in the blink of an eye.
In the vein of Tom Hanks' Castaway comes Keep Breathing, the story of Liv (Melissa Barrera), a woman who pursues her career at the expense of everything else in her life.
Liv's fateful day arrives as she's leading one of the most important projects of her life.
She rallies her team with a determined bark. Nobody will stop until they've got what they need.
She puts her words into action when her infirmed father falls ill and is hospitalized. Although she's urged to take the time to visit him,...

Shakina, a star of NBC comedy “Connecting…,” is ripping her home network for giving Donald Trump a town hall she says will promote “fear mongering, bigotry [and] disinformation.”
“Shame on @NBC. Y’all sign my checks as of late but I’m disgusted by my home network giving Trump a platform for fear mongering, bigotry & disinformation,” the actress said on Twitter. “Don’t praise yourselves for putting a trans woman on primetime then give a platform to someone who wants to abolish my rights.”
“Believe it or not, America is not reality television,” Shakina added. NBC did not immediately return TheWrap’s request for comment.

A Thursday Night Football game that saw the Chicago Bears and Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers go down to the wire helped Fox to the top spot in Thursday’s primetime ratings, with the game scoring a 2.9 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 10.07 million viewers.
The Bears’ victory did see the broadcast well off from CBS’ Monday one-off New England-Kansas City game in broadcast primetime in early Nielsen Live+Same Day data, but last night’s numbers will likely adjust in the finals later today.
Last night also saw the return of Supernatural in the first of the longtime CW drama’s final seven episodes in its delayed final season. That led into the Season 3 premiere of The Outpost.
Supernatural did overtake in the time slot NBC’s debut of its pandemic-themed comedy Connecting, which is subbing for Brooklyn Nine-Nine on the network’s fall schedule.

An understandable if tricky to navigate instinct during these many months of quarantine is the instinct to create meaningful art out of These Times. Even as the entire world goes on pause, creativity marches stubbornly on, hoping to make sense out of senseless things. But with no end in sight, it’s just about impossible for any art about the pandemic made during the pandemic to shed much light on what’s happening besides the fact that everyone feels like they’re losing their minds. That’s held true for TV shows about life in isolation that lean heavily on social distancing and Zoom. Something like Freeform’s “Love in the Time of Corona” or HBO’s “Coastal Elites,” while well-intentioned, failed to capture much about this era beyond the fact that it’s surreal. On the face of it, “Connecting…”, NBC’s new show about socially distanced friends shot in quarantine,...

Finding the comedy in any collective tragedy is a daunting task for entertainers. But bringing levity to an ongoing global pandemic that has claimed more than 200,000 U.S. lives and kept Americans in quarantine for six months and counting?
Well, that was a Barnum and Bailey-level tightrope walk for the producers of NBC’s Connecting — but it was also a challenge they were eager to face.

At the start of 2020, a television show featuring friends and family locked down in their respective homes as a deadly pandemic ravaged the globe would have been labeled as a dystopian drama and been treated as escapist entertainment for those looking to immerse themselves in a world completely unlike their own. But more than halfway through the year, that has become the new normal.
With that drastic lifestyle change, the scripted television industry has had to pivot as well.
What was once, perhaps, assumed to just be a temporary run of special remotely produced episodes of current and long-gone but still beloved series responding in near-real time to how relationships shift during self-isolation and social distancing has turned into a larger wave of new programming. Broadcasters, cable networks and streamers alike are not only fighting to deliver originals amid an ongoing production shutdown, but also offer content that reflects the...

Titled “Connecting,” the series is described as an ensemble comedy about a group of friends trying to stay close (and sane) through video chats as they share the highs and lows of these extraordinary times. It is unknown at this time when the series will air or if it will be part of NBC’s fall schedule.

Issa Rae has a line near the end of “The Lovebirds” that may well have been uttered during whatever pitch meeting it took to get the movie made: “This is like ‘The Amazing Race,’ but with dead people.”
And so it is — sort of. Rae and Kumail Nanjiani run from place to place, frantically trying to decode clues and face challenges — but instead of Phil Keoghan welcoming them to the next pit stop or doling out roadblocks and fast forwards, they’ve got to keep from being killed while others around them aren’t so lucky.
Nanjiani and Rae are funny and likable people who try very hard to bring some life to this enterprise, but the action is too preposterous for the laughs to make much headway. They’re fun to watch, in a way, but you really wish they had something better to do.

Murder Was the Case That They Gave Them: Showalter Gets Silly with Derivative Slapstick
Director Michael Showalter reteams with Kumail Nanjiani after the success of their beloved 2017 title The Big Sick for a screwball comedy of errors with The Lovebirds. Penned by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall, their derivative narrative refashions familiar tropes of a relationship-on-the-rocks resuscitated by dangerous adventures but instead falls into a stilted odd couple category with Nanjiani and his co-star, Issa Rae. The whole is less than the sum of its parts considering the talents of both leads, who are required to shoulder the brunt of a vehicle which offers little reprieve with any real supporting characters.…...

A good comedy pairing is always a joy to watch, almost regardless of the material. When a comedy’s premise can be high quality as well, laughs are inevitable for those watching the film. Such is most certainly the case with The Lovebirds, a very funny new movie that is hitting Netflix this week, after seeing its original release by Paramount delayed. A sale to the streaming giant ensued, and now, the embargo has lifted. Powered by a dynamic comedic duo of Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae, The Lovebirds is always an enjoyable watch, even when the plot gets a little bit ridiculous. The film is an action comedy, centering on a couple’s wild night. Jibran (Nanjiani) and Leilani (Rae) are an always arguing couple. A documentary filmmaker and an advertising executive, they’ve gotten to the point where they plan to break up. En route to a party,...

It’s not every day, or even every year, that a romantic comedy touches a nerve of reality — and is drop-dead funny, and becomes an acclaimed awards-bait hit. So when a director makes the rare romantic comedy that accomplishes all those things, unwittingly or not he has set the bar high for his next effort. “The Lovebirds” is the first movie directed by Michael Showalter since “The Big Sick,” the 2017 indie knockout about love, cultural identity, and a girlfriend in a coma, and since this one also costars the deadpan live wire Kumail Nanjiani, it’s hard not to go in with your expectations in overdrive.
The opening scenes totally deliver. We see the moony morning after the night that Jibran (Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) first slept together — they met at an event while flirting at the crudité table — and the actors generate the kind of connective heat that...
