Netflix Buys Oscar-Nominated Documentary ‘To Kill a Tiger’

Netflix has acquired the Oscar-nominated documentary feature “To Kill a Tiger.”

The film, about a father’s pursuit of justice in rural India, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and was awarded best documentary at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival. “To Kill a Tiger” was, up until now, the only film this year to be nominated for the best feature doc Oscar without distribution.

Directed and written by New Delhi-born director Nisha Pahuja (“The World Before Her”), the 127-minute film charts the emotional journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, who forces a social reckoning after his 13-year-old daughter is the victim of a gang rape.

Exclusive: Nisha Pahuja’s Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill a Tiger is returning to theaters this Friday, extending through the end of the month.

The film will be showcased in select specialty theaters across the U.S., according to a release, including (but not limited to) Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Phoenix, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Washington DC, and Dallas.

Last year, SS Rajamouli’s Rrr and Guneet Monga‘s The Elephant Whisperers made us proud. Delhi-born Nisha Pahuja has directed the film. It deals with a susceptible subject revolving around a sexually assaulted victim. Filmmaker Nisha hopes that this recognition gained by the film will help in bringing attention to the survivors of sexual violence.

Mindy Kaling and Dev Patel have boarded the doc To Kill a Tiger as executive producers prior to the film’s Oct. 20 release.

The synopsis for the film reads: “Ranjit, a farmer in India, takes on the fight of his life when he demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, the victim of a brutal gang rape. His decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of, and his journey unprecedented.”

Mindy Kaling and Dev Patel have signed on to executive produce the documentary “To Kill a Tiger,” a gripping story about a father’s pursuit of justice in rural India.

Dev Patel Launches Production Company Minor Realm, Expands Team With Lakshmi Iyengar and Samarth Sahni

“The Green Knight” star Dev Patel has launched his own production company, Minor Realm, which has a mission to “explore and develop the creative landscape of voices and talent that too often are unrecognized, bringing these stories to life in a larger way.”

Patel has already made two hires for the new banner: Sony Pictures’ Lakshmi Iyengar and producer Samarth Sahni, who will both report directly to Patel.

Minor Realm, which will focus on both films and television, already has a first-look deal with ShivHans Pictures, developing and creating projects with ShivHans’ CEO and founder Shivani Rawat and president of production Julie Goldstein.

Dev Patel’s directorial debut has sold to Netflix for most worldwide rights in a $30 million deal, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

Filming has just begun on the movie, but the buzz was high for the thriller at last week’s virtual EFM. Netflix beat out other bidders on the project.

In “Monkey Man,” Patel also plays an unlikely hero who emerges from prison to take on a world filled with corporate greed, to seek revenge on people who took everything from him a few years prior.

Patel also wrote the script with Paul Angunawela and his “Hotel Mumbai” collaborator John Collee. Netflix has acquired worldwide rights, with some exclusions, for “The Personal History of David Copperfield” star Dev Patel’s directorial debut “Monkey Man.” The streamer is thought to have paid around $30 million for the film.

The rights agreement excludes Spain, Latin America, Iceland, Former Yugoslavia, Poland, Russia and Baltic States, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Pan-Asian Ptv and China, where there are pre-existing deals.

In the India-set film, Patel plays an unlikely hero who emerges from prison to take on a world enmeshed in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values, seeking revenge from those who took everything from him many years ago. The script is by Patel, Paul Angunawela (“Keith Lemon: The Film”), and John Collee, who co-wrote “Hotel Mumbai,” which also starred Patel.

The buzz was strong for the revenge-thriller during last week’s virtual EFM and after seeing footage Netflix beat out other bidders on the project which heralds from Joker backers Bron and John Wick producers Thunder Road.

Dev Patel has been set to make his feature directing debut with action revenge pic Monkey Man. The Oscar nominee will also star in the film, with Endeavor Content launching sales at this week’s American Film Market. Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk is producing with Xeitgeist’s Joe Thomas, Samarth Sahni (Hotel Mumbai) and Patel. Production is set to start in spring 2019 in Mumbai.
