Back in 2017, Supernatural fans got some exciting news — a new spinoff called Wayward Sisters was in the works. The show was meant to star Kim Rhodes as Sheriff Jody Mills, a fan-favorite character from the original series.

It would have followed Jody, along with Sheriff Donna Hanscum (played by Briana Buckmaster), and a group of young women who all had their lives turned upside down by supernatural events. Under Jody’s guidance, they were set to become a fierce team of monster hunters. It was going to be a show about chosen family and survival, with a strong focus on sisterhood rather than brotherhood like the original show.

The backdoor pilot aired during Supernatural’s thirteenth season, and fans were hopeful it would be picked up. But sadly, that didn’t happen. In May 2018, the CW decided not to move forward with the spinoff. That news hit fans and the creators hard.

“I think that ship has sailed,” Andrew Dabb, who served as the last showrunner of Supernatural, admits when it comes to the spinoff that wasn’t picked up, Wayward Sisters. Season 13 of the beloved CW-turned-WB series included a backdoor pilot for the potential spinoff, with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) friends and fellow hunters Jody (Kim Rhodes) and Donna (Briana Buckmaster) and a new generation — Claire (Kathryn Newton), Alex (Katherine Ramdeen), Patience (Clark Backo), and Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip). The episode aired in January 2018, then in May of that year, it was announced it would not be moving forward. When we spoke with Andrew Dabb about what could have been in the original series finale ending, if not for Covid shutting down production, we also had to ask about Wayward Sisters — especially once he mentioned that the pilot script he and Robert Berens wrote for it “is really good.

Some viewers may say Supernatural lost steam in its last few seasons, but certain episodes prove otherwise. Running for an impressive fifteen seasons, Supernatural delivered over 325 episodes of television from 2005 to 2020. While some of those episodes were bound to be weaker than others, Supernatural maintained a surprisingly high caliber of storytelling throughout all fifteen seasons. Creator Eric Kripke left after season 5, which ended with the near-perfect season finale, "Swan Song." While Supernatural may have dipped slightly in quality after Kripke's exit, it soon found its footing again and continued to deliver consistently solid television.

From ghosts and vampires to angels and demons, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester went up against too many monsters to count throughout Supernatural's fifteen seasons. The CW should revive Supernatural with its canceled spinoff, Wayward Sisters, rather than continuing the Winchesters' story. Wayward Sisters had potential as a spinoff, featuring popular characters from the original show and the opportunity for guest appearances. Wayward Sisters would be a fresh and original addition to the Supernatural franchise, with an all-female cast and the chance to explore new storylines.

Supernatural was among the best fantasy shows on The CW, running for an impressive 15 seasons and 327 episodes, and there's even been speculation about Supernatural returning for season 16 — though it would be better to continue its legacy with a canceled spinoff instead. The show premiered back in 2005, and over the course of its many seasons, Sam and Dean Winchester hunted demons and saved the world multiple times. Supernatural ran for 15 years and is the longest continuously running American science fiction and fantasy show in history (pipped only by Doctor Who 1966-1989 in the UK). It has a devoted fanbase and has produced novels, graphic novels, a short web-series, and a Japanese anime adaptation. Surely, then, the show is a perfect jumping-off point for a spin-off series? Last week’s episode saw the Winchesters struggling against each other as it became clear that Billie’s plan to defeat Chuck was merely a power grab on her part. But naturally, things are never straightforward on Supernatural. Allies are not always allies, villains are not necessarily always villains. Billie’s attempt at grabbing Chuck’s position succeeded only in turning Dean’s sights on her instead of Chuck. Dean needs that outlet, he needs a bad guy he can punish. It’s the hunter’s way, and as we’ve seen in the past, the hunter is not always right.

Since 2005, Supernatural has gone through various story arcs, introduced a vast array of new characters and worlds, and covered plenty of lore, among other things. Supernatural season 14 kicked off with Sam recruiting everyone to help him track down Dean, and since he’s possessed by Michael, he could be anywhere. Meanwhile, Castiel meets with an unreliable source and finds himself in trouble, and Jack is trying to cope as a human, since his grace was drained last season.

Just because The CW didn’t pickup the “Wayward Sisters” spinoff doesn’t mean they’re gone for good.

Jody and the rest of the girl gang who appeared in Season 13, Episode 10, which served as the backdoor pilot for the potential spinoff, will be returning to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in the upcoming season of the longstanding drama.

“All of the characters are going to make their return one way or the other,” showrunner Andrew Dabb said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

After two attempts at a Supernatural spinoff, CW President Mark Pedowitz has come to the conclusion that what makes the long-running hit drama so successful is its leading men.

“I am concerned… it may be [stars] Jared [Padalecki] and Jensen [Ackles]. And there may not be a franchise beyond that,” Pedowitz admitted at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour on Monday.

However, “if there’s a great idea that [the producers] want to go forward with, we’re open to listening. It is a great franchise,” Pedowitz added.

Wayward Sisters cast members and writers are reacting to the news that the CW has decided not to move forward with the Supernatural spinoff. It was the second time the CW did a pilot for a Supernatural spinoff that didn’t go to series. Instead, the CW opted to go with Legacies, a new series in The Vampire Diaries/The Originals universe.

Normally at this time of year, we’re gearing up to see exactly how Sam and Dean Winchester will get themselves out of whatever jam the midseason finale of Supernatural left them in. In fact, we’re in that situation yet again, but this time around, they’re going to need some major help from outside parties.

Deadline reports another attempt at a Supernatural spinoff is in the works at The CW. The project, entitled Wayward Sisters, would star Kim Rhodes reprising her Supernatural character, Sheriff Jody Mills. CW President Mark Pedowitz has wanted another stab at a spinoff, for quite some time. Wayward Sisters will be introduced as a backdoor pilot in the 13th season of Supernatural, starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. It will feature Jody fostering troubled young women, whose families have been killed by monsters and demons. Armed with her experience in law enforcement and monster hunting, she will train them to become a fierce female fighting force. There's no word yet on whether the characters Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton), Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), or Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Brianna Buckmaster) will be involved.

Supernatural spin-off Wayward Sisters will get a backdoor pilot in season 13 of the long-running series. Here's your first look...

Much like the previous attempted Supernatural spinoff a few years ago - the vampire-centric Bloodline (not to be confused with the Netflix drama of the same name) - The CW will set up Wayward Sisters with a backdoor pilot episode, which will air on January 18th in the Us.

Kim Rhodes will star as her long-running Supernatural character - sheriff Jody Mills - joined by young female cohorts, each tragically orphaned in attacks by monsters.

The clip shows two brothers and something in the woods. The film is slated for a March 7th, 2017 Video-on-demand release.
