Exclusive: Julian Fellowes is hitting the road this week and heading to New York City, the setting of his latest hit series, HBO’s The Gilded Age, premiering its third season at the Tribeca Festival on Thursday. Additionally, Fellowes will be teeing up promotions ahead of the September 12 premiere of the third and “final” installment of the Downton Abbey films, featuring the lead cast from the beloved PBS and ITV series of the same name.

Fellowes will appear on the red carpet at Tribeca in his wheelchair due to issues caused by spinal stenosis, a condition that compresses the spinal cord and affects mobility. He was originally diagnosed approximately two decades ago and recovered after an operation. It has now returned, and Fellowes has been unable to bounce back as quickly at 75 as he did in his 30s. Downton Abbeyfans are getting their first glimpse of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The third movie will bring the beloved ITV franchise to a close, and based on the teaser trailer released on June 2, it also pays tribute to late star Dame Maggie Smith.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the first official teaser for Downton Abbey 3 reveals that numerous fan-favorites from the TV series are returning. The cast includes Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Elisabeth McGovern, Allen Leech and Harry Hadden-Paton. They are joined by the likes of Kraven the Hunter actor Alessandro Nivola and Surface star Joely Richardson. But Smith, who passed away in September 2024, is also represented in the trailer.

Downton Abbey began with the hit ITV series in 2010. It followed the lives of the Crawley family and the many people employed at their sprawling Yorkshire estate in the early 1900s, running for 52 episodes across six seasons.

Downton Abbey is one of those franchises that keeps resurfacing despite a series finale that aired in 2015.

The universe has been kept alive with a movie franchise, but the third big-screen installment will serve as its last.

At least, that’s what we’re being told for now.

Focus Features on Monday released the first trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which hits theaters Friday, Sept. 12. The footage sees Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) stop and pause to look at a portrait of the late Dowager Countess Violet Crawley, who died in 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era (prior to Smith’s death in 2024).

At one point, the head of the family Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) pays respect to the mansion that made the show famous — the real Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England — by giving it a pat and a kiss, apparently as the family says goodbye to it.

Hold onto your hats — the Crawley family is back in action in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

The first official teaser trailer dropped Monday and showed returning cast members Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Allen Leech, Laura Carmichael, Elizabeth McGovern and Harry Hadden-Paton all reprising their roles in the beloved period piece, which first aired six seasons on PBS before its first two films came out.

The teaser starts with the group at the races with Jim Carter, playing butler Mr. Carson, welcoming attendees into the year 1930. Newcomer Dominic West is tuxedo-ed up at a lavish bash in London and Mary (Dockery) wows with a bright red dress and tiara in front of photographers as she exits a car.

“Downton Abbey” is officially moving into the 1930s with the latest teaser trailer for its upcoming movie, “The Grand Finale.” The movie from Focus Features will premiere theatrically on Sept. 12.

The teaser begins with three couples elegantly strolling down the green at a horse race. The teaser then jumps between several more stunning visuals, including a packed theater and Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) wowing in a red dress before being dubbed a “sensation.” The video ends with several shots of the estate as various characters tip their hats and give knowing, somber looks.

Could there be trouble in paradise for the Talbots? Matthew Goode has confirmed that he won’t be reprising his role of Mary’s husband Henry Talbot in the third and final Downton Abbey movie, hitting theaters on Sept. 12, after previously missing the second installment.

“I was unavailable for the second because I was doing The Offer,” Goode recently told The UK’s Radio Times. “[For the third], I was shooting [Netflix’s Department Q]. But I also buggered my knee, and I had to have an operation. That takes weeks to get over, so I was never going to be able to do it.

With its September 12 release date inching closer, Focus Features finally revealed the official title for the third Downton Abbey movie which will bring an official end to the beloved franchise 15 years after it first debuted on PBS to rave reviews. Taking to the official Downton Abbey Instagram, it was revealed that the previously untitled third film will be titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

If there was any doubt that the film’s title was hinting at the film being a closing chapter for the franchise, it’s tagline most certainly confirms the film will be the final chapter in the franchise with the poster teasing, “The time has come to say goodbye.”

Focus Features and Carnival Films have released the official teaser poster for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which will open in theaters globally on September 12, 2025.

“Downton Abbey 3” will mark a significant conclusion for the beloved franchise, as the title of the film — as revealed on Thursday — suggests this really is the end of the road for “Downton Abbey.” Unveiling a teaser poster, Focus Features also revealed the film’s title: “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.”

“It’s time to say goodbye,” the tagline reads on the poster, which sees Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) in the familiar halls of Downton. The film hits theaters later this year.

Julian Fellowes, the creator of the TV series and writer of the first two films, returns to pen the screenplay for “The Grand Finale,” which is directed by Simon Curtis who spearheaded 2022’s “Downton Abbey: A New Era.”

Plot details are under wraps but the new film follows in the footsteps of 2022’s “A New Era” and 2019’s “Downton Abbey” movie, both continuations of the acclaimed TV series that ran for six seasons.
