BBC Drafts In Consultant To Examine ‘Breakfast’ Bullying Allegations After Deadline Investigation
Image
Exclusive: The BBC has drafted in a consultant to help steer an internal review of bullying and misconduct allegations on its flagship breakfast show.

Following an investigation by Deadline earlier this year, sources said the BBC’s Hr team has seconded a lawyer from PwC to help review the culture on Breakfast, the UK’s most-watched morning TV show. Employees have been approached about sharing their experiences, according to people familiar with the process.

Breakfast editor Richard “Fredi” Frediani is at the heart of the disquiet. Deadline has spoken to more than 20 industry insiders about Frediani’s conduct, with many making allegations about him running the show with an iron fist, including claims of him shouting and swearing at colleagues. We revealed that senior presenter Naga Munchetty was among those thought to have raised concerns.

Since taking over Breakfast in 2019, sources said Frediani has been the subject of at least two misconduct complaints,...

‘BBC Breakfast’ Editor Was Rewarded With More Power After Facing Bullying & Misconduct Claims
Image
Exclusive: The boss of the BBC’s flagship breakfast news show had his powers beefed up after facing allegations of bullying, favoritism, and shaking a female colleague, Deadline can reveal.

Richard Frediani is arguably the BBC’s most powerful news executive outside of London, leading BBC Breakfast to awards success and agenda-setting stories. But behind the show’s famous red sofa, and the welcoming faces of presenters like Sally Nugent and Jon Kay, there has been disquiet about his leadership.

Deadline has spoken to nine BBC insiders about Frediani, with sources detailing at least two workplace misconduct complaints since he became the editor of Breakfast in September 2019, one of which was the subject of a formal grievance process last year. The BBC declined to comment on individual Hr matters. Frediani did not respond to a request for comment.

Frediani, who likes to be known by his school nickname “Fredi,” is...

Class: Fans are praising ‘the Indian adaptation’ of Elite
Image
Netflix’s new show Class is receiving rave reviews from audiences.

The show, which is dubbed as the Indian version of the Spanish drama series Elite, is set in the fictional Hampton International School in New Delhi.

The show explores themes such as the wealth gap, gender, sexuality, priviledge, and caste.

It follows three underpriviledged students named Dheeraj, Saba, and Balli, who are transferred to Hampton when their own school burns down in a suspicious accident.

For Hampton’s trustees, this is a great PR opportunity to show how they’re giving back to society by coming to the aid of the less-privileged. But Dheeraj, Saba, and Balli know that there’s something fishy going on the moment they set foot in their new school.

As soon as the new show was released earlier this month, everyone’s first reaction was how similar the storyline is to Elite.

“Just finished watching Class on Netflix.

Presenter Jon Kay ‘banned’ from BBC Breakfast discussion by co-host
Image
BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent “banned” her co-host Jon Kay from a discussion on the latest episode.

On Monday (6 February), Nugent said she was unable to “have a conversation” with Kay as she was concerned that he might share some Happy Valley spoilers.

The BBC drama’s latest run drew to an end on Sunday (5 February), with an acclaimed finale that brought the entire series to a close.

On BBC Breakfast, Carol Kirkwood said she was planning to swiftly leave the studio after delivering her weather update as she didn’t want to hear the hosts’ Happy Valley discussion.

However, Nugent, when Kirkwood told her she hadn’t yet seen the finale, replied: “Carol, neither have I! I haven’t seen the ending. So do not worry, we are safe! I give you my word.”

However, Kay replied: “I’ve watched it and I can’t speak to anybody about it.

Olly Murs says he ‘can’t believe’ people thought ‘I Hate You When You’re Drunk’ lyrics were ‘controlling’
Image
Olly Murs has responded to criticism of the “cruel” lyrics to his new song “I Hate You When You’re Drunk”.

Last month, the singer released his new single from his album Marry Me.

However, the lyrics were quickly dissected online, with critics suggesting that the song showed Murs attempting to humiliate a loved one for getting drunk and that the words were “misogynistic”.

While Murs’s fiancée Amelia Tank defended the former X Factor finalist, he has now responded to his critics while appearing on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday (6 December).

“I mean, it’s obviously upsetting to think that people took it that way because it was not that intention,” Murs told hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent. “It was a song that I really related to in the studio when it was a song that was [written] eight years ago.”

He explained: “It’s so true, because at the start of January,...
