Canada’s creepiest little production studio, Black Fawn Films, have been on a real roll lately. Earlier this year their supernatural Horror from writer/director Chad Archibald It Feeds (a great indie scare fest for fans of Lights Out and Insidious, starring Twilight‘s Ashley Greene) hit theatres after scaring the pants off of everyone at Panic Fest. And now, the hometown team returns to Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival with The Undertone, a slow burn that really delivers the goods and crafts some of the year’s scariest sequences with nothing more than a microphone and your imagination’s ability to totally f*ck you up.
Written and directed by Ian Tuason, in his directorial debut, The Undertone follows Evy (Nina Kiri), a young woman completely isolated from the outside world while caring for her dying mother. Evy‘s only real escape from the day-to-day gloom is her...

Horror lovers have something to look forward to next month with the 2025 film, It Feeds, set to arrive on Hulu. Additionally, Twilight fans may notice the film features a familiar face in its starring role.
The 2025 Indie horror film It Feeds is coming to Hulu on August 1st. The film stars Ashley Greene, arguably best known for her role as Alice Cullen in the Twilight Saga, and plays Cynthia Winstone, a psychiatrist with clairvoyant abilities. While the film wasn't exactly a massive commercial success, critics on Rotten Tomatoes received the film very well, rating it at 88%, based on 26 reviews. There is, however, a noticeable difference in audience score, which right now sits at a solid but not quite as high score of 63% averaged from over 50 reviews.

It turns out that sparkling in the sun wasn't the strangest thing the Twilight cast had to wrap their heads around back in 2008. According to several Cullen family members, before cameras ever rolled on the franchise’s first film, the actors were put through a feline-themed bonding exercise that has lived in infamy ever since. During a Twilight reunion panel at FanExpo in Denver, hosted by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, the cast — including Jackson Rathbone, Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene, and Peter Facinelli — dove into the weirdest memory from set that instantly bonded them all. And no, it wasn’t playing baseball in a thunderstorm or trying to keep a straight face opposite a CGI baby. It was... acting like cats.
“Catherine [Hardwicke, director] thought it would be interesting to give us all those like feline-esque movements,” Facinelli recalled. “So she brought in a movement teacher, and we were all kind of like cats.

Among the other interesting opportunities at the ongoing Denver Fan Expo was the chance to speak to The Twilight Saga star Peter Facinelli. He answered many eager questions fans still have about the experience of shooting the films and the upcoming show. When asked if he had read the new book in the series, he said:
“I can't read it. Because it's like Edward's thoughts, you know? And I feel like it would be like Carlisle going through his diary.! It just feels so invasive to me. And as a dad, I don't know what he's thinking of me.”
Peter Facinelli, who plays Carlisle Cullen in the franchise, was in attendance on Thursday, alongside co-star Kellan Lutz, who plays Emmett Cullen in The Twilight Saga. Hell of a Role Al Pacino recently took on the role of a Catholic priest confronting the Devil himself. The (for lack of a congruent term of what he brings to any role) gravitas of Pacino anchors Father Theophilus Riesinger, the German-born Capuchin priest who famously endured a grueling four-month battle to reclaim Schmidt’s soul from demonic control. Set in 1928 Iowa and steeped in the scorched bones of American demonology, ‘The Ritual’ follows two priests- one devout but fractured, the other wavering in faith- tasked with exorcising a woman gripped by violent possession. This isn’t just another fictional horror tale. The film is based directly on Begone Satan!, the 1935 pamphlet detailing the real-life exorcism of Emma Schmidt, a documented case so harrowing it has long haunted the fringe between folklore and faith. The same material inspired William Peter Blatty’s ‘The Exorcist’ and, eventually, William Friedkin’s landmark 1973 film.

Throughout his career, Al Pacino received nine Academy Award nominations and won one in 1992 with Scent of a Woman. However, considering how prolific the actor has been, with over 60 acting credits, not all of his works were critical hits.
For example, his latest release, The Ritual, debuted with his lowest score ever: an abysmal 0%. The film is a possession horror that is based on the same story as the critically acclaimed The Exorcist. After debuting with 0%, the audiences disagreed that the film deserved such a negative score and gave it a positive 62% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
Since its release, when The Ritual debuted with 0% out of 26 reviews, the film's score has been updated. At the time of writing, the possession horror has a 6% approval rate out of 63 reviews, and it no longer serves as Al Pacino's lowest-scored film based on the critics' scores, but it's now his fourth-lowest score.

Al Pacino’s The Ritual Struggles With Storytelling & Style(Photo Credit –YouTube)

This new horror film, directed by David Midell, features Pacino alongside Dan Stevens, Ashley Greene, and Abigail Cowen. The movie stumbled critically despite the star power and has only just climbed to 8% as more reviews have come in.
Critics Slam The Ritual’s Cinematography and Storytelling
Critics pointed out that while the actors tried to bring life to the film, the cinematography fell flat and was loaded with tired exorcism clichés that made the experience dull. Reviews also mentioned that The Ritual leaned heavily on familiar horror tropes without adding anything fresh or engaging.

Al Pacino is one of the most renowned actors in Hollywood, winning multiple accolades, including an Oscar for Best Acor for Scent of a Woman. So you can imagine the shock (but not surprise) when, in a career-first move, his latest project, The Ritual, debuted with a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The Ritual is a horror movie directed by David Midell. It stars Pacino and Dan Stevens among a star-studded cast list that includes Ashley Greene (Twilight) and Abigail Cowen (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). Unfortunately, the film received an abysmal response and, as of this writing, it has slightly increased and settled at 6% as more reviews roll in. It won't be long until the audience score is revealed.
Collider recently reviewed The Ritualand gave it a low score of 3/10. It praised the actors for making do with what they're given, but criticized the cinematography, which was lackluster and filled with every lazy exorcism trope imaginable.

Well, The Ritual sure is another exorcism movie! The hook? This one’s got Al Pacino, Dan Stevens, Ashley Greene, and Patricia Heaton. The problem? The Ritual plays no better than the umpteenth generic exorcism release without marquee names, and sometimes even worse. Exorcism movies are a dime a dozen in the horror genre, and nothing here dares to push subgenre boundaries or expectations past the devil’s doorstep.
Filmmaker David Midell, along with co-writer Enrico Natale, recreates the famously documented 1928 exorcism of Anna Ecklund, a pseudonym for Emma Schmidt (played by Abigail Cowen). Stevens plays the doubting Father Joseph Steiger, a priest who must welcome Emma into his house of worship, while Pacino becomes the German-American exorcist celebrity (by Roman Catholic terms), Father Theophilus Riesinger. Under Father Riesinger’s command, Father Steiger has his faith challenged by Emma’s worsening condition. Is it a psychological affliction or truly a demonic curse?...

Not since Paul Schrader’s ill-starred “Exorcist” entry “Dominion” in 2004 has an exorcism-centric thriller taken itself quite so seriously as “The Ritual.” Based on a real-life case, like director David Midell’s prior “The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain,” this more fantastical drama is a relatively restrained effort less interested in standard horror effects than the events’ psychological impact on their participants. Nonetheless, its integrity and able performers only do so much to elevate a reluctant genre movie that emerges as rather dreary — not unlike “Dominion,” albeit minus theological discussions. With Al Pacino and Dan Stevens topping the cast, XYZ Films’ release should lure in some genre fans. Still, their disappointment may be salved only by the thought that this is a definite genre improvement over the abysmal “The Exorcist: Believer” from two years ago.

A new horror movie has earned a 0% score during its Rotten Tomatoes debut. Like any genre, horror tends to have major critical ups and downs. While many entries in the genre are well-respected classics with stellar reviews, including 2017's Get Out (which has a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes), 1991's The Silence of the Lambs (95%), 1975's Jaws (97%), and 1960's Psycho (97%), others have been widely lambasted, including 1987's Jaws: The Revenge (2%), 2002's FeardotCom (3%), and 2022's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (3%).
However, early 2025 has been a fertile period for horror movies that are both critically and commercially successful. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A young priest who’s recently suffered a personal tragedy and is struggling with issues of faith teams up with an older, veteran priest to perform an exorcism on a young girl who’s been exhibiting disturbing signs of demonic possession. The younger priest is skeptical, believing that her manifestations could be the result of psychological disturbance. The older priest is resolute, determined to once more do battle with the Devil.

Not even Dan Stevens or veteran actor Al Pacino can inject life into The Ritual, the latest exorcism horror movie that adapts the 1928 exorcism of Emma Schmidt. Framed with a documentary eye, director David Midell attempts to shake up the tired formula by stretching out the cleansing ritual typically reserved for the climax into a full feature. The problem is that there’s not enough substance or story to fill its plodding runtime, just more tired musings on faith and religion amidst stale possession horror cliches.
The Ritual drops viewers into a beleaguered convent already exhausted by the violent outbursts and eerie behavior exhibited by deeply unwell patient Emma Schmidt (Abigail Cowen). As Emma exhibits the telltale signs of possession, terrorizing the nuns that include yanking out clumps of hair from a terrified Sister Rose (Ashley Greene), the Church has already approved an exorcism. "The true story that inspired The Exorcist." That's the tagline for Al Pacino and Dan Stevens' new horror film The Ritual that hits theaters this Friday, but if its Rotten Tomatoes score is any indication of things, it seems the movie itself is in need of an exorcism. Debuting to a brutal 0% score, The Ritual is being blasted by critics for being "cheaply made" and not accomplishing "much of anything."
"If you've ever wondered what a painfully boring, generic exorcism narrative filmed in the style of The Office would be like, The Ritual is the answer," says Joseph Robinson from Fish Jelly Films. Man, that's tough. Directed by David Midell, Mark Hanson from Slate Magazine notes that the film is "a special kind of hell," while Jacob Oller from Av Club adds:

An exorcism horror picture starring Dan Stevens and Al Pacino is an easy sell for cinephiles, even if it only delivers on the lowest common denominator. Frankly, that’s what we get with The Ritual, a true-story-inspired possession flick that sticks to the genre’s formula pretty closely, failing to elicit much in the way of scares or sympathy.
The Ritual Review
The Ritual details sinister real events that happened in Iowa in 1928, where two priests participate in a marathon exorcism to rescue an afflicted woman, all the while dealing with their own pasts and crisis of faith. The film is (self-proclaimedly) based on the “most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history,” so you would be forgiven for feeling that this is overly familiar.
One of the more unique things about The Ritual — of which there are admittedly few — is director David Midell’s choice to shoot the film in an almost documentary-like format.

David Midell’s The Ritual, which is based on the true story of Emma Schmidt’s 1928 exorcism in Earling, Iowa, stresses in a text coda before the end credits that its central event is the most documented of its kind. But with the film playing out in such mind-numbingly derivative fashion, it seems less like Midell and co-writer Enrico Natale studied the documents of this case than they did the hoary tropes of this specific subgenre of horror film. Regardless of its historical point of origin, the film simply ends up joining the ranks of countless, tedious Exorcist wannabes before it, a robust trend that’s become its own special kind of hell.

Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” topped the U.K. and Ireland box office in its opening weekend, debuting with a strong £9.5 million ($12.9 million), according to Comscore.

Two genre-driven thrillers have surfaced on digital platforms this week, both released by Signature Entertainment. The first is Fear Below, a period-set aquatic survival film blending mid-century crime and nature horror, and the second is It Feeds, a supernatural possession story centred on generational trauma and unseen terror. Though markedly different in tone and style, both films mark distinctive entries in their respective subgenres, offering audiences immediate access to contemporary independent horror.
Fear Below, directed by Matthew Holmes, is set in 1946 and unfolds in the remote waterways of the Australian outback. A group of professional divers, hired under mysterious circumstances to recover a sunken vehicle, quickly learn that their true objective is not salvage work but the retrieval of stolen gold. The vehicle belonged to a group of bank robbers, now employing the divers to discreetly recover the wreckage. However, the waters they’ve entered are occupied by a territorial bull shark,...

5 Twilight Characters Who Could Totally Lead Their Spin-Off (Photo Credit – Instagram)
It’s been years since Twilight first stormed into pop culture, but let’s be honest—its grip never really loosened. The books had readers hooked, and the movies turned the saga into a full-blown phenomenon. While the central trio, Bella, Edward, and Jacob, were the heart and soul of the film franchise. Twilight also introduced many intriguing characters who frequently didn’t get the screen time they deserved.
What if some of those supporting characters were given their spotlight? So here are the five Twilight characters who could definitely carry a spinoff series or film, and they might even surpass the original.
1) Carlisle Cullen

As Twilight sinks its fangs back into relevance with a new wave of digital popularity on Netflix, millions of viewers find themselves awestruck by the brooding Cullens again. But amid this resurgence, there’s a darker truth that lurks behind the cinematic sheen.
Ashley Greene, who brought the character of Alice Cullen to life, has recently opened up about a personal struggle much less glamorous than her role: debilitating panic attacks and the absence of appropriate support amid the franchise’s promotion tour. While fans binge-watch the saga, Greene’s admission reveals a deeply troubling flaw in the way Hollywood handled mental health issues back in the day. The Cullen clan might be back in the limelight, but their return cannot dismiss Ashley Greene’s struggles or how the production team failed her.

It Feeds, the latest from Chad Archibald, doesn’t open with a bang, but instead, a lingering unease. A teenager arrives at a small private psychiatric clinic, her arms marked and her voice shaking, claiming something monstrous is attached to her. The place feels lived-in, the air heavy with secrets. What begins as a familiar possession story starts to shift, tightening its grip not through spectacle but by picking at the nerves of its characters and, by extension, ours.
Ashley Greene plays Cynthia Winstone, a psychic psychiatrist whose ability to see into the minds of others has come at a steep cost. She’s cautious, methodical, and clearly haunted by past trauma. When Riley (Shayelin Martin), the terrified teenager, turns up seeking help, Cynthia is quick to shut her out. It’s not a matter of disbelief, but self-preservation. Her daughter Jordan (Ellie O’Brien), younger and still clinging to moral clarity,...

You've seen The Exorcist. You've seen the movie about the making of The Exorcist, The Exorcism. Now, prepare to see the movie about the exorcists and the exorcism that inspired The Exorcist. Yes, David Midell's upcoming possession chiller The Ritual is set to see Al Pacino and Dan Stevens play real-life priests Theophilus Riesinger and Father Joseph Steiger, whose 1928 exorcism of Emma Schmidt — chronicled in Carl Vogl's controversial 1935 book Begone Satan! A Soul-tiring Account Of Diaboloical Possession In Iowa — served as the inspiration for William Friedkin's horror magnum opus. The power of Christ compels you... to check out the trailer below:
As possession horror trailers go, this one's certainly hitting all the well-worn genre grooves: talk of "the armour of God"; restraints, convulsions, and flinging furniture; distorted, unholy voices; and a couple of priests — one the wily old fundamentalist, the other a green young sceptic — experiencing the ultimate crisis of faith.

Al Pacino has played the Devil before (in the 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate), and earlier this year we learned that he would be playing an enemy of the Devil in the exorcism horror film The Ritual. Taking on the role of a troubled priest, Pacino stars in the film alongside Dan Stevens of Abigail and Godzilla x Kong, who also plays a troubled priest. We’ll get to see how well this troubled duo fares against Satan when XYZ Films gives The Ritual a North American theatrical release on June 6th, with Altitude giving audiences in UK and Irish cinemas the chance to see the movie a week earlier, on May 30th. With those dates swiftly approaching, a new trailer for the film has dropped online and you can check it out in the embed above.

Dan Stevens, who has become synonymous with indie horror, is paired with icon Al Pacino for the ultimate exorcism film, “The Ritual.” The duo star as two priests who “face the ultimate test of faith,” as the logline teases. The film is based on the true story that was captured in 1935 book “Begone Satan!” about a Church-sanctioned exorcism.
