Gemma Whelan at an event for Game of Thrones (2011)

News

Gemma Whelan

One of the best Game of Thrones actors has joined 3 Body Problem season 2, and I'm so excited
Image
3 Body Problem, Netflix’s epic sci-fi show based on the Remembrance of Earth's Past book series by Liu Cixin, is gearing up for its highly anticipated second season. The twisty series was created by Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff—along with Alexander Woo—in their first genre project together since their HBO smash hit. Needless to say, the pressure was certainly on to make this adaptation great.

Fortunately, the first season, released in March 2024, received generally positive reviews from critics and general audiences alike, and here at Winter is Coming, we very much enjoyed it. Now, Netflix has confirmed that production on season 2 has begun—but that’s not all.

Humanity’s going to need all the help they can get.

3 Body Problem Season 2 is now in production. Alfie Allen joins the cast and reunites with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.

Kenneth Branagh Likens Jodie Comer To Young Meryl Streep After Filming ‘The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde’
Image
As audiences watch Jodie Comer take on the undead in 28 Years Later, the actress’ future looks bright.

The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde director Kenneth Branagh recently praised Comer and compared her to a young Meryl Streep after working together on the upcoming psychological thriller.

“I consider myself fortunate to have worked with her at this stage in her career,” Branagh told The Times. “As somebody once said of the young Streep, ‘I wish I had shares in her future.'”

Comer reacted to the praise after the film went into production last August. “He is very kind. Bless him,” she said.

Of the comparison to the 3x Oscar winner, the Killing Eve alum said, “Oh, me? I’m nothing like Meryl! I’m just a girl from Liverpool!”

9 times Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon made you root for the wrong person
Image
One of the marks of a good show is if viewers can see things from both sides. During Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, it was easy to look at the villain and see their point of view. There were also moments when the heroes of the story did things that made you hope they’d die. You can say it’s a bit harsh, but you know it’s true. This article is going to show the top nine times this writer found himself rooting for the “wrong” person.

House of the Dragon season 2 Episode 5 9. Daemon Targaryen, in general

I’m starting hot with this one because Daemon is rarely wrong. Yes, he’s done a lot of questionable things (like dating his underage niece). But let’s be honest: no one is watching House of the Dragon without him. For that reason alone, I think that...

Sure, Gemma Whelan would return to the Game of Thrones universe as Yara Greyjoy
Image
The enormous cast of Game of Thrones has gone on to do lots of great stuff in TV, film and on the stage. Take Gemma Whelan, who played Yara Greyjoy, sister to Theon (Alfie Allen). She's appeared in shows like The Tower and Gentleman Jack, but there will always be fans curious about her time in the Seven Kingdoms.

"It's very nice and I look back incredibly fondly," Whelan told Hello! "What a rich and brilliant experience it was. When you’re in it, you don't realize. Not that you take it for granted but when you’re making it, particularly with season two, I just thought, ‘We’re making a bit of TV and let's see what happens.’ And it just blew up, didn't it? I think everyone was very grateful all the way through about what we had and what we were making."

Game Of Thrones: 10 Actors Who Were Almost Cast In The Acclaimed HBO Series
Image
Stars Who Almost Made It To Game Of Thrones ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Game of Thrones has become so iconic that it’s nearly impossible to picture it with any other actors than the ones we know and love. Emilia Clarke’s fiery Daenerys and Lena Headey’s cold-as-ice Cersei are ingrained in our minds, but the casting process was far from straightforward. Before the show became the global sensation we know, several Hollywood A-listers nearly joined the cast, some even auditioning for key roles that would eventually make history.

Imagine a world where Mahershala Ali almost played a Qarthian merchant or Sam Heughan wasn’t swinging a sword in Outlander but instead vying for a role in Westeros! While many could have fit in seamlessly, others missed their shot, leaving us to wonder, what could have been? Let’s look at these 10 actors who almost made it into the world of Game of Thrones.

“Bring on the girls”: Game of Thrones Didn’t Honor Emilia Clarke’s Sleazy Request That Everyone Wanted to See
Image
We’ve seen quite a lot of intimate scenes in Game of Thrones, and while Emilia Clarke had been on a lot of them, she had a special request that the showrunners failed to honor. It’s upsetting because the actress faced stressful times while performing these acts where she was required to bare it all, and still her only wish was not granted.

Daenerys Targaryen had a few lovers in the show whom she got very intimate with, but none of them were women. The British actress actually hoped her character would explore more of her s*xuality and perhaps find romance in fellow females, a thing that evidently did not happen.

How Agatha All Along cleverly avoids the Bury Your Gays trap
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe came back in a big way in 2024, and after complaints that superhero fatigue was tanking the world’s highest-grossing franchise, it seems all we needed was a bit of camp to bring things back around. Despite the lauded legacy of Jac Schaeffer’s WandaVision, the idea of focusing an entire spinoff on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness seemed like a gamble. Boasting a diverse cast of LGBTQ+ actors and promises from Aubrey Plaza (Aubrey Plaza) that it would be a "gay explosion" meant that fans had to deal with the usual cries that the MCU has gone ‘woke.’

Thankfully, while The Marvels felt the wrath of those unable to handle a movie led by women, Agatha All Along has defied expectations. From debuting one of the most important gay characters from Marvel Comics to giving us the MCU’s first lesbian kiss, Agatha All Along did...

Kenneth Branaghs Upcoming Psychological Thriller Sounds Much Better Than Another Hercule Poirot Movie
Image
Kenneth Branagh's upcoming psychological thriller has an exciting cast, including Patricia Arquette, Jodie Comer, and Michael Sheen. Branagh is a great director, and an original project like The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde is much more exciting than adaptations like his Hercule Poirot franchise. Branagh will likely continue to make Hercule Poirot films after The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde, as A Haunting in Venice teased his next case.

Kenneth Branagh's next psychological thriller film already seems much better than a continuation of his murder mystery Hercule Poirot franchise. Kenneth Branagh is best known for his work in front of the camera, as he's starred in some major movies like Henry V and the Hercule Poirot franchise. He's also had a wildly successful career behind the camera, though, as he directed all the Hercule Poirot films and even original movies like Belfast. Now, Branagh is set to continue his...

Actor, writer and director Kenneth Branagh’s next film will be The Last Disturbance Of Madeline Hynde. Comer stars alongside Patricia Arquette, Michael Sheen, Tom Bateman, Vicky McClure, Michael Balogun, Kristina Tonteri-Young, Karla Crome, Aiysha Hart and Gemma Whelan.

House Of The Dragon Season 2 Has A Major Difference To Game Of Thrones Season 2 That I'm Very Excited About
Image
House of the Dragon season 2 won't just be following Game of Thrones season 2's formula. Game of Thrones season 2 was more like another season 1, with a huge amount of major new characters and locations introduced. House of the Dragon's story will be faster-paced, and remain focused on the characters from season 1.

House of the Dragon season 2 wont be following the same formula as Game of Thrones season 2, and it makes me more excited about the prequels sophomore outing. The spinoff had some broad similarities in season 1, with a lot of table dressing in service of the wars to come, and a major twist towards the end of the season. House of the Dragon season 1s ending wasnt quite Ned Stark gets beheaded levels of shocking, but Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar killing Lucerys Velaryon was brutal nonetheless.

House of the Dragon season 2 will be building on from that moment -...

Cristóbal Balenciaga (2024)
Trailer drops for series on iconic designer ‘Cristóbal Balenciaga’
Cristóbal Balenciaga (2024)
Disney+ has shared the official trailer for ‘Cristóbal Balenciaga,’ the original drama series that recreates the life and legacy of the Guetaria-born Spanish creator, one of the most iconic fashion designers of all time.

In the series, created by Lourdes Iglesias and 12-time Goya award winners Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño, and Jose Mari Goenaga (“The Endless Trench”), actor Alberto San Juan plays Cristóbal Balenciaga, an enigmatic and extraordinarily talented man who defied the social conventions of the time and revolutionized the world of fashion.

The original series begins as the designer presents his first Parisian haute couture collection in 1937. He has left behind a successful career in his ateliers in Madrid and San Sebastian dressing the Spanish elite and aristocracy. However, the designs that had set the trend in Spain don’t quite work in the sophisticated fashion empire that Paris has become, where Chanel, Dior and Givenchy are the benchmark of haute couture.

Doctor Who Audio Drama Actor Hopes To Reprise Classic Villain Role In TV Story
Image
Doctor Who audio drama actor Rufus Hound rather creatively expresses his interest in reprising his role of the classic series villain The Meddling Monk. The character was the first Time Lord other than the Doctor to appear in the series, crossing paths with William Hartnell's First Doctor in 1965's "The Time Meddler." The Monk was portrayed by Peter Butterworth in "The Time Meddler" and "The Dalek's Master Plan," and has been voiced by Hound, Graeme Garden, and Game of Thrones' Gemma Whelan in Big Finish's audio dramas.

While Hound is set to reprise his role as the Monk in Big Finish's Doctor Who 60th anniversary adventure Once & Future, the actor now shares his hopes to reprise the role on television one day.

Just to let you and the fandom know, if anyone else ever gets to play The Monk on television before me, I will track them down and kill them.

John Wick: Chapter 4 Utilizes A Familiar Face From The Harry Potter Franchise
Image
This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4" and the later "Harry Potter" films.

In "John Wick: Chapter 4," John Wick (Keanu Reeves) must reunite with his estranged family in order to finally rid himself of the High Table and remove the sizable bounty on his head. When he visits his family, however, he has a rude reunion with Katia Jovanovich, Wick's long-lost adoptive sibling who is played by none other than actor Natalia Tena. Clad in leather and covered in prison ink tattoos, Jovanovich is a leader of the Ruska Roma assassins last seen in "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum."

Tena is a veteran of several high-profile film franchises and blends into her new tough role so completely that it's a little hard to place her at first. She makes a lasting impression in the supposed final fourth chapter of the series, and she may even turn up...

Game Of Thrones Star Admits Being Turned Off By Show's Sex Scenes
Image
Game of Thrones actor Ciarán Hinds admits that he was "put off" by the show's gratuitous sex scenes. Based on the acclaimed fantasy novels by author George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones ran for 8 seasons on HBO from 2011 to 2019. Hinds joined the show as Mance Rayder, aka the Wildling King Beyond the Wall, in season 3, playing the role until season 5.

In a recent interview with The Independent following his casting in The Rings of Power season 2, Hinds recalls that he was initially hesitant to join Game of Thrones because of its excessive sexuality. For Hinds, all the graphic sex was taking away from the actual story being told. Check out Hinds' full comment below:

“I was rather put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in it, because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling. But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.

Ciarán Hinds: ‘I was put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in Game of Thrones’
Image
Ciarán Hinds has admitted that he had reservations about appearing in Game of Thrones due to the amount of sex scenes.

The Irish actor starred in HBO’s fantasy epic as Mance Rayder, a former member of the Knight’s Watch later known as the “King Beyond the Wall”.

In a new interview with The Independent, Hinds opened up about his time on the show, in which he appeared across three seasons from 2013 to 2015.

Hinds said that, despite the series being a huge hit, he was in two minds about taking on the role due to its excessive explicit content.

“I was rather put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in it because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling,” he told The Independent.

“But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.”

Game of Thrones was notorious for its countless sex scenes, with...

Game of Thrones (2011)
How House of the Dragon Empowers its Women Behind the Scenes
Game of Thrones (2011)
Although the bar set by Game of Thrones was incredibly low to begin with, House of the Dragon somehow barely manages to do better than its predecessor week to week in regards to how its female characters are treated on screen. Between the gruesome death of Aemma Arryn (Sian Brooke) in the series premiere, the willingness of the Velaryons to marry their twelve year old daughter Laena (Nova Fouellis-Mosé) off to the King for political power, and Daemon Targaryen’s (Matt Smith) creepy and predatory behavior toward his niece Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock), House of the Dragon still finds ways to undercut showrunner Miguel Sapochnik’s claims that the series is a more feminist take on Westeros.

Where House of the Dragon does better than Game of Thrones, however, is in creating a safer environment for its actors so that they feel secure and empowered behind the scenes. In a fairly...

‘House of the Dragon’ Star Matt Smith Says He Questioned Series’ Amount of Sex Scenes: ‘Do We Need Another?’
Olivia Cooke and Emma D'Arcy in House of the Dragon (2022)
“House of the Dragon,” the highly anticipated spinoff to HBO’s wildly popular “Game of Thrones,” already has people wondering if the series will match the original in terms of scope and quality. On one ground, however, “House of the Dragon” has it covered: According to star Matt Smith, the show matches the original’s penchant for nudity and explicit scenes, which he questioned as being gratuitous.

“You do find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?’” Smith said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. “And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we do.’ I guess you have to ask yourself: ‘What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?’ And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written.”
