A Minecraft Movie's Title Has A Surprisingly Important Meaning
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If there is one surprise that movies have offered up in 2025 thus far, it's the astronomical success of "A Minecraft Movie." The fact that it is far and away the biggest Hollywood release of the year thus far is shocking ... unless you're a kid who was raised on the game. The only thing that even comes close is the runaway success of Ryan Coogler's "Sinners." But in terms of sheer size? It's hard to argue against this video game turned blockbuster.

The movie is based on the video game "Minecraft," an unassuming brick-building game that became the most popular game in history. So, why didn't Warner Bros. and director Jared Hess just call the movie "Minecraft," instead opting to go with "A Minecraft Movie?" There's a very good reason for that, it turns out. As explained in author Andrew Farago...

Batman's Toughest Villain Breaks The Biggest Rule Of His Rogue’s Gallery
Image
An impossible fight against an invisible foe that ignores villain tropes and threatens all of Gotham required Batman to adjust his tactics and rely on others.

Bruce Wayne spent years transforming himself into a Caped Crusader with a singular goal: uphold his vow to eliminate all crime. The result was Batman, a mysterious solitary figure that stalks dangerous criminals while cloaked in shadows. Batman has contingency plans for defeating any villain and always comes prepared with a wide variety of gadgets. Many of the best Dark Knight stories explore the relationship between Batman and his infamous rogues' gallery. Batman's greatest adversaries share unsettling similarities with the Dark Knight, usually in the form of obsessions that present as iconic motifs. However, the toughest villain Batman has ever faced isn’t a costume-clad recluse fixated on some gimmick but a force of nature that threatens the core of Gotham itself.

eBuying Comics: Week 77
Image
This week we are going to take a look at the history of Tmnt comics by looking in-depth at the supporting cast of allies and enemies. There will be a section of people reading this who would have been like me in the ’90s thinking these characters were only from toys and a cartoon. So this is going to be a comics education for you. I am going to try and keep things in chronological order, but there will be lots of various size tangents to go off on. The focus will be on first appearances, key issues and how each character was introduced in the Idw series. The Idw series serves an important purpose as it has introduced and reintroduced many fans to the Tmnt universe. It is now over 100 issues in, as well as a handful of interesting accompanying mini-series. The best way I often describe the Idw...

Batman Gifts: Our Pick of the Best DC Collectibles
Chris Cummins Dec 2, 2019

Here's our rundown of this year's coolest Batman collectibles.

80 years in and Batman is as popular as ever. Even as you read these words, work is underway on the next cinematic adventure for the Dark Knight, and Joker is still going strong in theaters -- so much so that Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips are hiding away crafting the character's next solo film. The eight decades since Batman was first introduced in the pages of Detective Comics have seen him undergo countless changes, the versatility of the Caped Crusader is a huge part of his staying power. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, Batman is just a hero at heart -- whether he's the goofy 1960s one or the grimdark Synder take. So you really can't go wrong with giving the gift of Batman, and here's some ideas to make your holiday shopping experience a Bat-tastic one!

Joe Corallo: Not Forgotten – The Matthew Harding Interview
Last week I talked with Vito Delsante about his new Kickstarter campaign, and this week I got the chance to talk with Matthew Harding, a comics creator who has a Kickstarter campaign with Einar Masson ending this week for an anthology titled Not Forgotten featuring public domain superheroes from the Golden Age of comics.

Jc: For people who may be unfamiliar with your and Einar Masson’s work, can you tell me about your comics experience and what made you decide to work on an anthology with Einar Masson?

Mh: Einar and I both went to college together where I had run the comics club for about five years. Since then I’ve been working freelance doing odd jobs from production work at Black Mask Studios to animation at Madefire motion comics. I’ve self-published Popapocalypse through Kickstarter campaigns, colored a couple of Bloodworth issues, and written comics for creator...

Comic-Con 2012 - Full Sunday Schedule is Live!
Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.

Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

National Cartoonists Society Adds Webcomics Award
Nation Cartoonists Society president Tom Richmond announced this week that the venerable organization was adding a web-comics division for this year.

According to Richmond’s blog post, he and Awards membership chairman Sean Parkes had been working on this for some time. They received feedback from several industry experts including Dave Kellett (Sheldon, Drive), Andrew Farago (curator of the Cartoon Art Museum, San Francisco), Michael Jantze (The Norm, Professor of Sequential Art and Animation, Savannah College of Art and Design).

Richmond went on to explain that the category, Best Online Comic Strip, will be narrowly focused and based on the following criteria:

Comic-strip format only (no single panels, long-form narrative. etc.) Must be web only publication (any syndication in print would make it eligible for the Best Syndicated Comic Strip Division) Must be at least a weekly Must have shown consistent publication based on determined time-schedule (i.e. it being a daily,...

Comic Book Artist Turner Dies
Comic book artist Michael Turner has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 37.

He died from complications related to bone cancer at a hospital in Santa Monica, California on 27 June.

Turner drew covers for popular comic book titles including Superman/Batman, The Flash, Civil War and Justice League.

He also created online comics for the hit U.S. TV series Heroes, and published a number of his own titles, such as Fathom, via his company Aspen Mlt.

Paying tribute to Turner, Andrew Farago, the curator of San Francisco's Cartoon Art Museum, says, "He was definitely one of the most popular and influential comic book artists working right now.

"He was very, very much in demand as a cover artist on high-profile projects."...
