The King Tide Review: A Parable Still Provoking Waves
Image
Off the rugged coast of Newfoundland lies a small fishing village, seemingly removed from the troubles of the wider world. Its people eke out a living from the unpredictable sea, enduring hardships that bind them into a close-knit community. But a fortuitous discovery is about to change everything for this island haven—and put its close bonds to the ultimate test.

One stormy night, amid tragedy and turmoil, a mysteriously orphaned baby washes ashore. Bobby and Grace take the foundling in and name her Isla, never guessing her extraordinary gift. Isla can heal all wounds and sickness with but a gentle touch. Under her care, the island knows nothing but prosperity and perfect health.

Yet this idioll conceals cracks, as revealed when Isla’s powers suddenly falter after a dreadful event. The villagers’ absolute dependence on her emerges, as does human nature’s darker side. Will familial love survive against the rising tides of entitlement,...

The King Tide Review
Image
Plot: In a remote fishing village, a wrecked boat containing a baby washes up on the shore. Rescued by the local mayor (Clayne Crawford) and his wife (Lara Jean Chorostecki), they adopt the baby and name her Isla. As it turns out, the child has mysterious healing powers and can even fill the sea with fish, allowing the island to be completely self-sufficient. As she grows into a young woman (Alix West Lefler), Isla becomes almost like a deity, but when her powers fail, the town becomes desperate to protect their way of life, no matter what the cost may be to Isla herself.

Review: The King Tide reminded me a lot of the type of genre-tinged morality tales we used to get from Rod Serling’s version of The Twilight Zone. The premise is pretty intriguing. Imagine a child existed in your town whose mere presence guaranteed your health...

‘The King Tide’ Review: Frances Fisher in an Unsettling Tale of Supernatural Powers and Poisonous Groupthink
Image
The first time Frances Fisher’s character appears in The King Tide, she’s stooped, uncommunicative, crushed by life and perhaps by a stroke. When the main action picks up, 10 years later, she’s a glowing picture of New Agey vim and vigor, and the island where she lives has been transformed. Nobody fears illness anymore because all discomforts and injuries are relieved by the miraculous healing powers of a little girl. The small population is united and harmonious — until the little girl’s powers lapse.

In this story of strong atmospherics and well-etched types, an isolated community discovers an otherworldly source of harmony, and the North Atlantic setting is as much a character as any of the villagers. Shooting in the tiny Newfoundland town of Keels, director Christian Sparkes (Hammer) plunges straight into a mood of crisis and foreboding with scenes of a pregnant woman’s bloody miscarriage and a disruptive storm.

TIFF 2023 Adds New Films by Harmony Korine, Tarsem, Larry Charles, Patricia Arquette & More
Image
The Toronto International Film Festival lineup keeps rolling in, with Midnight Madness, Discovery, and Platform programs being unveiled this week. Leading the pack is the North American premiere of Harmony Korine’s infrared action feature Aggro DR1FT, while new films from Tarsem, Larry Charles, Patricia Arquette, Molly Manning Walker, and more were also added.

“Sides will be split — both figuratively and literally (on screen) — as Midnight Madness returns to the Royal Alexandra Theatre with another stimulating concoction of unpredictable shock and ‘y’arr!’ cinema,” said Peter Kuplowsky, TIFF International Programmer, Midnight Madness. “Featuring two timely satiric provocations from Saudi Arabia (Naga) and Serbia (Working Class Goes to Hell) — nations that are making their section debut — this year’s madness infectiously ignites with 11 o’clock numbers that go all the way to midnight courtesy of Larry Charles’ bonkers and bawdy Dicks: The Musical. A menagerie of tastes will be sated, so bottoms up!

New Movies to Watch This Week: ‘Shirley,’ ‘Becky,’ ‘Tommaso’
Image
Movies are slowly starting to trickle back into theaters, emphasis on the word “slowly.” For the time being, audiences’ options are still better at home, as this week’s crop of new films includes outrageous new genre fare — such as “Becky,” from the directors of “Cooties,” which plays a bit like a hard-r version of “Home Alone” — and festival standouts such as Hong Sang-soo’s “Yourself and Yours.”

“The Invisible Man” star Elisabeth Moss elaborates on her ever-widening scope of tortured women in the wildly unconventional Shirley Jackson biopic, a movie which portrays the author of “The Lottery” as the kind of character one might discover in her mind-bending horror tales.

Here’s a complete rundown of the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them. Find more movies and TV shows to stream here.

Hammer Review: A Sleek, Well-Acted Crime Thriller
Image
How far will a father go to protect the life of a criminal son? Hammer answers that thorny question in the idyllic cornfields of a rural Canadian border town. The film is an intense crime thriller adroitly interwoven with a compelling family drama. The disappointment a parent feels in their child's poor choices is measured against unconditional love. Hammer tackles heavy themes in its relatively short runtime.

Hammer opens with a drug deal gone bad. Chris Davis (Mark O'Brien) meets an old friend, Adams (Ben Cotton), and his girlfriend (Dayle McLeod), on a desolate country road. Chris was a drug mule, returning to smuggling after several years out of the game. His old pals wonder what drew him back. They mock his new nine to five lifestyle. A nervous Chris is eager to complete the transaction.

Stephen Davis (Will Patton) argues with his wife (Vickie Papavs). He doesn't have the...

Hammer Review: Will Patton and Mark O’Brien Walk a Moral Tightrope
Vickie Papavs
It’s easy to tell someone we’ll do anything for family when it’s what we’re supposed to say. That’s the expectation. That’s normalcy. And the majority of us never have to test those words anyway. We don’t all weigh the risk to our lives by donating an organ or financial security by re-mortgaging a home. But those acts do loom above us. So does tough love. “You want to live under our roof? Then abide by our rules.” Enforcing that line is where things get hard because it hurts to put the group above any individual. It just might be the first step to their salvation, though, since you’re neither giving up nor closing the door on a return. You’re simply doing what you think is right and necessary.

Writer/director Christian Sparkes knows such a decision isn’t without regret, however.

“Hammer” Can’t Quite Leave An Impact
Mark O'Brien
Prodigal sons, tough fathers, and the extreme situations that bring them back together once more are nothing new onscreen. It’s a tried and true dramatic formula. Hammer is the latest to give it a shot, crafting a film that mixes drama elements with thriller moments to try and craft something a bit different. Unfortunately, despite a nice performance from Will Patton, the ultimate impact left by the project is far less than you would expect. The ingredients are here for something fairly moving and easily effective, but the folks involved can’t quite pull it off. The movie is a crime tale, mixing dramatic and thriller elements, in telling the story of a father and son. For Stephen Davis (Will Patton), his estranged son Chris (Mark O’Brien) has always been an albatross around his neck. Not in the traditional ways, but in terms of worrying about him. When Stephen...

Fantastic Fest Announces List Of Short Films which includes must sees ‘Cop Hard’ and ‘Infernal Nuns’
The complete list of short films screening at Fantastic Fest has been announced. Unfortunatly as with most short films, there isn’t too much known about many of these. I know Infernal Nuns recieved a lot of praise from various blogs after it screened at Fantasia and Cop Hard is based on the popular web series, but apart from that, I’m pretty much in the dark. What I do know is that sometimes the short films are more rewarding than some features. Remember folks, some of these directors may go on to do some very big things in the near future, so try and check them out. Here is the press release.

Austin, TX-Wednesday, August 24th, 2011- Fantastic Fest is excited to announce the short film lineup for the seventh edition of Fantastic Fest, happening September 22-29 in Austin, Texas. Fantastic Fest loves its short films – they provide a...
