Image
Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. Two weeks after the 2025 Tonys, we discuss the upcoming Broadway season and forecast likely 2026 Tony contenders.

Darren Criss, Nicole Scherzinger, Sarah Snook, and Cole Escola Lead Tony Winners
Image
The 78th Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall got off to a rousing start, as Oprah Winfrey blessed host Cynthia Erivo with a finger hold before the “Wicked” star took center stage to sing the original “Sometimes All You Need is a Song.” With the support of a choir, Erivo tipped her hat to the nominated movie stars (lyric: “Half of Hollywood did a play”), supplied powerhouse vocals, and brought the number to crescendo by getting the audience involved, briefly handing off the mic to Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, and Adam Lambert, among others.

It was, indeed, a union of Broadway and Hollywood throughout the evening. During her opening monologue, Erivo noted that it was the most lucrative year in Broadway history (with reported ticket sales of $1.89 billion), “providing we don’t run out of cast members from ‘Succession.’”

“Succession” star Sarah Snook was actually won the first Tony of the evening.

2025 Tony Awards: ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ dominates with 6 wins, Nicole Scherzinger shocks with Best Actress win over Audra McDonald
Image
Edge-of-seat drama. Stunning twists. Musical performances that brought down the house. The 2025 Tony Awards followed a script that any Broadway aficionado would appreciate.

While the crowd-pleasing Maybe Happy Ending dominated the night with six wins — including Best Musical, Best Musical Actor (Darren Criss), Best Musical Director, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Scenic Design for a Musical — there were some shocking moments.

In one of the night's most highly anticipated matchups, Nicole Scherzinger took home the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Sunset Boulevard, edging out Broadway’s most celebrated star, Audra McDonald. McDonald, earning her record-extending 11th nomination for her portrayal of Mama Rose in Gypsy, had been favored to win following her recent Drama Desk Award victory and surveys of Tony voters that showed her holding a narrow lead (likely due to the recent Patti LuPone controversy).

Tony Awards: Predicting the Winners Using Just Math
Image
The world will descend on New York on Sunday night, by way of the 78th Tony Awards. Shows set in the U.S., the U.K., Cuba, Italy, and Iran all make their way to the nominees circle. Not to mention a show from South Korea projected to win more Tonys than any other production, potentially the first one ever to premiere in Asia and win best musical.

And when I say “projected,” I mean that mathematically. Every year, I run a statistical model based on precursor awards, which categories a show is nominated in, blended critic predictions, and betting markets to project the odds that each nominee will emerge victorious in every category. After another wonderful year on Broadway, with 42 new shows opening and 29 of them receiving nominations, it’s time to get excited for the big night with a data-based forecast at who might triumph at Radio City...

Ready for her close-up: Nicole Scherzinger takes the lead in Tony odds for Best Actress in a Musical
Image
For the first time since the Tony Award nominations were announced, Nicole Scherzinger has taken the lead in Gold Derby’s odds to win Best Actress in a Musical.

In this incredibly competitive Broadway season, our combined predictions have been surprisingly steady in many of the top categories. Even Best Actress, which has been seen as a close race since the start, has been consistent in favoring Audra McDonald for Gypsy, with Scherzinger’s Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard in second, and Broadway breakout Jasmine Amy Rogers in the title role of Boop! The Musical in third. The category is rounded out by Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard from Death Becomes Her.

Scherzinger has long had the majority of our users predicting her to win, but has not been able to break out of second place because of the number of experts and editors who have favored McDonald. Our experts...

Darren Criss Could Have A Bunch Of Maybe Happy Endings On Tony Awards Night – The Deadline Q&a
Image
Spoiler Alert: The final paragraphs of the following interview contain details about the ending of Maybe Happy Ending

TV has been good to Darren Criss. He found fame on Glee and critical acclaim in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, to name just a small sampling of his television work. But talk to the Tony-nominated star of Maybe Happy Ending even briefly about his career and one thing quickly becomes clear: He really, really loves Broadway.

Criss made his Broadway debut as Daniel Radcliffe’s replacement in the 2012 revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, returned as Neil Patrick Harris’ replacement in 2015’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch and in 2022 starred with Sam Rockwell and Laurence Fishburne in American Buffalo.

But it’s his glowingly reviewed starring role in Maybe Happy Ending that has earned Criss his first Tony nomination. Actually his first two – as...

‘Maybe Happy Ending’ director Michael Arden taps into the ‘universal heartbreak and joy’ of his robot love story
Image
"I think it's all about making sure that you're building a world for an audience ... and that you're making sure they're on the emotional ride that you want them to be on," explains Maybe Happy Ending director Michael Arden.

For years, Arden has been one of the most prominent directors when it comes to reinventing worlds. He won a Tony Award for the recent revival of Parade, and earned additional nominations for his radical reimaginings of Once on This Island and Spring Awakening. But Maybe Happy Ending, which tells a near-future love story between two obsolete "Helperbots," marks the first time that Arden has directed a new musical on Broadway.

Speaking to Gold Derby, the director reveals what it was like to build a complex musical world from the ground up, and why he believes that this robot saga is actually about living.

While the Tony Awards gives out eight acting awards each year to recognize the best in both plays and musicals with gendered categories for leading and supporting performances, the Drama League Awards only gives out one acting award each year. The Distinguished Performance Award has dozens of nominees and combines all performances into one category, making it incredibly difficult to ever win the award. Once you win once, you can never win again, so some actors receive honorary notices when they return to Broadway.

Nicole won the this year’s Distinguished Performance Award for her work in the musical Sunset Blvd.

2025 Drama League Awards winners announced: Nicole Scherzinger takes Distinguished Performance
Image
Winners of the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced today in a ceremony hosted by Emmy-winning NY1 reporter Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. In a competitive year for theater awards, both Maybe Happy Ending and Sunset Boulevard added important feathers to their caps on their march to the Tony Awards.

Nicole Scherzinger took home the Drama League’s highly coveted Distinguished Performance prize for her radical reinterpretation of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Actors can only win this catch-all performance award once in their careers.

The winner of this award repeats that victory at the Tonys more often than not. Last year, Sarah Paulson won the Drama League before clinching a Tony win for her role in the play Appropriate. Other recent Drama League winners who went on to win a Tony in the same year include Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge!), Bryan Cranston (Network), Glenda Jackson (Three Tall Women), Ben Platt...

Creating a world for Helperbots: Dane Laffrey on the scenic design of ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ (exclusive images)
Image
“Making theater, especially musicals, can feel super mysterious and alchemical. You're looking for energy and you're trying to get lightning in a bottle,” says Dane Laffrey of the process of creating an original Broadway musical. He earned a Tony nomination for the scenic design of Maybe Happy Ending, a tuner which he also produced with director Michael Arden through At Rise Creative. Laffrey describes the show as the “little engine that could” in a new interview with Gold Derby. “There's just something so special about it,” he explains. "The idea, the score, what it stands for, and the humanity that it's trying to cause us to focus on by telling a story about non-humans.”

Maybe Happy Ending tells a story of two retired Helperbots named Oliver and Claire, played by Darren Criss and Helen J Shen, respectively. These obsolete androids use their remaining battery power to venture out into the...

Whether he’s standing under the glare of a spotlight on a Broadway stage, or perched in front of an open window at a bustling Nolita coffeeshop, one fact stays the same: Darren Criss practically vibrates with energy. And that observation isn’t just because Criss currently stars in the new Broadway musical Maybe Happy Ending, where in a world filled with robots, energy is everything.

2025 Drama League Awards nominations: 51 actors up for Distinguished Performance, ‘The Hills of California’ snubbed
Image
Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, 51 performers are nominated. There is no crossover between members who vote on the Drama League Awards and the Tonys, but the nominations can nevertheless be revealing as to which performances and productions break through, or not, with this group’s expanded categories.

One of the most shocking results of the nominations is the complete omission of The Hills of California. The Jez Butterworth play is one of...
