Let us look into the story and understand how greed plays a major role in the theme of this film.

Image
Saban Films has acquired the North American rights to director Stuart Ortiz’s (“Grave Encounters”) newest horror film “Strange Harvest,” set to release later this summer, Variety can report exclusively.

The acquisition comes after a long festival run following the film’s Fantastic Fest premiere in 2024. The official synopsis reads: “A routine welfare check in the San Bernardino suburbs leads to a gruesome discovery — a family of three has been bound, bled, and posed below a strange symbol written in blood on the ceiling. Saba and No ID’s ‘From the Private Collection’ Is a Cross-Generational Labor of Hip-Hop Love
Image
Saba and No ID are two legends of Chicago hip-hop, from two different generations. Saba is the cerebral rap poet who made his name with corrosively pained classics like 2018’s Care for Me and 2022’s Few Good Things. No ID, the “Godfather of Chicago Hip-Hop,” has spent his life making the beats that Saba grew up on. But they join forces to reach the higher ground on their long-awaited collaboration album, From the Private Collection of Saba and No ID. It’s rare to hear an indie rapper who...

Power Rangers: Lord Drakkon Name Explained - Origin for the Codename of the Evil Tommy Oliver
Image
Not every fan of Power Rangers may be aware of the origins of Lord Drakkon's name. When Drakkon makes his on-panel debut, it was a mystery who could be under the helmet until two issues later, when Drakkon was revealed as Tommy Oliver. After that, Drakkon became the Boom! Studios Power Ranger series' best villain, but the series only briefly delved into why Tommy chose the Drakkon codename.

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Annual 2017, the story "Search Party" written by Kyle Higgins, with art by Goi Montes offers readers some additional context for the Drakkon version of Tommy's origin story, including elucidating the background of his villainous moniker.

Namely, the story showcases the fateful conversation between the World of the Coinless incarnation of Tommy Oliver, and the Rangers arch-enemy Rita Repulsa, in which they discussed the first Drakkon, and touched on why Tommy felt inspired to...

Mehazabien Chowdhury Explains Why 'Saba' is Important for Bangladeshi Cinema
Image
International cinema has been left at the wayside for far too long, and in recent years it has finally been getting the recognition it deserves. At this year's Toronto International Film Festival, an installment from Bangladesh completely captures our hearts as the film tells a universal story about hardship, pain, and moving on. Saba follows its titular character, played by Mehazabien Chowdhury, who cares for her paraplegic mother by herself. She faces the poignant dilemma of escaping her world or striving to build a life somewhere within the tragedy, a story that is told in vibrant colors and visceral emotions.

Film Analysis: Saba (2024) by Maksud Hossain
Image
The progress of Bangladeshi cinema during the last few years is rather evident even if sporadic. Although the presence of Mostofa Sarwar Farooki remains the most dominant one, Maksud Hossain, in his feature debut, comes to add his name in a list including Rubaiyat Hossain, Abdullah Mohammad Saad and Mohammad Rabby Mridha among others, who highlight the fact quite eloquently. The script is based on personal experience, as Hossain’s wife and co-writer of the movie Trilora Khan, has been the primary caregiver for her paraplegic mother for 25 years following a car accident.

Saba is screening at Toronto International Film Festival

The story revolves around 25-year-old Saba, who lives and takes care of her rather demanding mother, Shirin, who has been paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident 20 years ago. As Shirin’s need for medical treatment increases, with the complications with her heart causing significant issues, Saba...

‘Saba’ Review: An Impressive Debut About a Family Trapped in Bangladesh’s Poor Disability Infrastructure
Image
A sense of financial and personal stagnation permeates “Saba,” the Bangladeshi social drama from first-time director Maksud Hossain. A strong (if stylistically straightforward) debut, it follows 25-year-old Saba (Mehazabien Chowdhury), who struggles to make ends meet while looking after her ailing, paraplegic single mother Shirin (Rokeya Prachy), whose own frustrations often explode in Saba’s direction.

To pay for Shirin’s life-saving surgery, Saba finds a waitressing job at a seedy hookah lounge in Dhaka — a position in which, she’s told, women tend not to last — with long hours that only complicate her caregiving duties. It’s one indignity after the next, both for Saba, who has to beg for the job to begin with, and for Shirin, who has no choice but to wait in bed until Saba can bathe her and change her diaper.

Tales of such misfortune run the risk of veering into pity porn, but...

Bangladeshi Helmer Maksud Hossain Brings Emotional Debut ‘Saba’ to Toronto
Image
Bangladeshi filmmaker Maksud Hossain is set to unveil his feature directorial debut “Saba” at the Toronto Film Festival. The film tells the story of a young woman who is the sole caregiver for her paraplegic mother in Dhaka.

The project emerged from personal experience. Hossain’s wife Trilora Khan has been the primary caregiver for her paraplegic mother for 25 years following a car accident. After his father-in-law passed away suddenly from Covid-19, Hossain and Khan, who co-wrote the script, began developing a story about a lower-middle class woman in Dhaka facing caregiving challenges without family support or financial resources.

“We started thinking about what if we tell a story of a young woman, Saba, who lives in lower-middle class Dhaka, and she is taking care of her paraplegic mother by herself, without any family, without money. What would Saba do in a situation like this to make sure that her mother lives at any cost?...

Flotilla Activists Hope to Bring Aid to Gaza — Or Spark a ‘Political Crisis’

Activists are planning to lead a flotilla of ships to Gaza, amid Israel’s ongoing siege. They’ll transport 5,500 tons of desperately needed food and supplies from Istanbul to the Palestinian territory, where famine looms.

The activists don’t necessarily expect to make it there. They hope they do. But in the event that Israel blocks them, boards them, and detains them — or worse — they hope their efforts will inspire international outcry and put more pressure on Israel to end its war in Gaza and blockade around the territory.

Concrete Valley Review: A Poetic, Measured Look at Immigrant Lives Forging New Paths
Rashid
Straddling the hazy line between documentary and fiction, the work of Canadian filmmaker Antoine Bourges is intensely concerned with the plights of disadvantaged and marginalized populations. In his latest and most quietly impactful effort to date, Concrete Valley, Bourges turns his gaze toward the North American immigration struggle, further examining the sense of dislocation that often defines his films’ subjects/characters.

The film is set in Thorncliffe Park, a high-immigrant, low-income neighborhood of Toronto whose titular nickname stems from its geographical position nestled up against a lush hillside forest, and it begins with Rashid (Hussam Douhna), a Syrian immigrant, taking a solitary nighttime walk through these tranquil woods. The curiously hushed environment at first suggests a dream, lending Concrete Valley a sense of magical realism that corresponds to mythical tales of strangers traversing strange lands. When Rashid’s impromptu sylvan meanderings are discussed a short time later, he’s warned...

Zdf Studios Takes Ard Degeto Film’s ‘The Zweiflers’ for International (Exclusive)
Image
Berlin — In a bellwether deal on one of the cutting edges of European TV, Zdf Studios has taken distribution worldwide on drama series “The Zweiflers,” produced by Turbokultur for Ard Degeto Film and Hessischer Rundfunk (Hr).

Created and showrun by David Hadda, the six-part series will premiere in Germany on Ard’s Mediathek streaming service in the spring and also be shown on Das Erste, Ard’s main linear channel, in the near future.

In an age of spiraling costs and a large need to cut through a still immensely crowded market, Europe’s public broadcasters –Zdf Studios, not Zdf in this case – are looking to partner. The most obvious partners are other state TV networks, even in their own country if the co-operation works.

Wish Ending Explained: As Dreamers Do
Image
If there's a constant, all-encompassing rule to the universe, it's that absolutely nothing is built to last. If all matter is doomed to the inescapable fate of entropy, and every living thing eventually dies, then what hope do such lovely intangibles as love, desire, and dreams have?

Well, to quote that ersatz Disney prince, Vision, "a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts." Love, dreams, and wishes are beautiful almost because of the fact that they can't always come true; it's the hope, the having of these wishes, that makes life worth living more than merely the attainment of them. Walt Disney and the studio that still bears his name have been a proponent of this principle for Disney (the man's) entire life and Disney (the studio's) existence to date. And now that the studio has reached the milestone of sticking around for 100 years, it's only natural that they'd wish to...

Image
Noname recently returned to the NPR offices for another expectedly great Tiny Desk Concert.

The Chicago rapper is now one in a small batch of artists who’ve performed at the Tiny Desk twice, having made her debut back in 2017. But now with two official studio albums under her belt, 2018’s Room 25 and this year’s fantastic Sundial — not to mention the book club and activism she’s devoted herself to in the interim — 2023 Noname shines with a palpable sense of confidence.

Noname performed a six-song set that included four songs from Sundial: “namesake,” “hold me down,” “boomboom” with Ayoni, and “balloons.” She also dug up the Room 25 highlight “Don’t Forget about me” and invited her Ghetto Sage bandmates Smino and Saba to do “kush and love songs.”

The rapper saved the unrelenting “balloons” for last, showing some appreciation to her hosts: “Where better to do my most controversial song than NPR?...
