Saban Films has acquired the North American rights to director Stuart Ortiz’s (“Grave Encounters”) newest horror film “Strange Harvest,” set to release later this summer, Variety can report exclusively.

The acquisition comes after a long festival run following the film’s Fantastic Fest premiere in 2024. The official synopsis reads: “A routine welfare check in the San Bernardino suburbs leads to a gruesome discovery — a family of three has been bound, bled, and posed below a strange symbol written in blood on the ceiling. Detective Joe Kirby and Lexi Taylor recognize the symbol as the calling card of a killer from 15 years earlier calling himself Mr. Shiny, who has seemingly returned to continue his murder spree.”

At this year's Toronto International Film Festival, an installment from Bangladesh completely captures our hearts as the film tells a universal story about hardship, pain, and moving on. Saba follows its titular character, played by Mehazabien Chowdhury, who cares for her paraplegic mother by herself. She faces the poignant dilemma of escaping her world or striving to build a life somewhere within the tragedy, a story that is told in vibrant colors and visceral emotions.

The progress of Bangladeshi cinema during the last few years is rather evident even if sporadic. To pay for Shirin’s life-saving surgery, Saba finds a waitressing job at a seedy hookah lounge in Dhaka — a position in which, she’s told, women tend not to last — with long hours that only complicate her caregiving duties. It’s one indignity after the next, both for Saba, who has to beg for the job to begin with, and for Shirin, who has no choice but to wait in bed until Saba can bathe her and change her diaper.

Bangladeshi filmmaker Maksud Hossain is set to unveil his feature directorial debut “Saba” at the Toronto Film Festival. The film tells the story of a young woman who is the sole caregiver for her paraplegic mother in Dhaka.

The project emerged from personal experience. Hossain’s wife Trilora Khan has been the primary caregiver for her paraplegic mother for 25 years following a car accident. After his father-in-law passed away suddenly from Covid-19, Hossain and Khan, who co-wrote the script, began developing a story about a lower-middle class woman in Dhaka facing caregiving challenges without family support or financial resources.

The Chicago rapper is now one in a small batch of artists who’ve performed at the Tiny Desk twice, having made her debut back in 2017. U.K. based sales agency Film Republic has picked up Peru’s 2024 Oscar entry “The Erection of Toribio Bardelli,” the latest film from Adrián Saba, one of Peru’s most prominent auteurs on the festival scene.

Film Republic has also shared a first international trailer with Variety. The film screens this week in Los Angeles at the GuadaLAjara Film Festival LA, which runs Nov. 1-3. V&r Films distributes in Peru, Livres Distribution in Brazil.

Hrithik can be seen in a white T-shirt and pants paired with a jacket and a baseball cap. His father Rakesh Roshan chose to be in casuals. All the women, however, wore Indian wear for the celebration.

Vice President Kamala Harris presided over a star-studded event celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop at the VP’s official residence in Washington, DC on Saturday including performances from Lil Wayne, Common, and Mc Lyte.

The historic “50 Years of Hip-Hop” occasion, co-sponsored by the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation Urban, was acknowledged as the “first-ever hip-hop house party at the Office of the Vice President of the United States” by Harris, who delivered opening remarks before ceding Mc duties to comedian Deon Cole.

Kamala Harris invited some of rap’s top artists, from Lil Wayne to Slick Rick, to perform on Saturday at her home in Washington, D.C., for what she called “the first-ever hip-hop house party at the Office of the Vice President of the United States.”

Harris celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop from a stage built on her lawn with a guest list of rap luminaries, including Common, Doug E. Fresh, Mc Lyte and Fat Joe.

The photos were clicked in a restaurant in Buenos Aires. Saba shared a solo picture of Hrithik, wherein he is seen donning a sleeveless black T-shirt, and a matching cap.
