Lou Gramm

Stuck in the '80s celebrates 20th anniversary
Image
Stuck in the ‘80s celebrates its 20th anniversary today, becoming the longest-running podcast devoted to 80s pop culture. Created and co-hosted by award-winning Orlando-based journalist Steve Spears, the show is marking the milestone with a special two-hour retrospective.

“Episode 750 is a nostalgic look back at some favorite Stuck in the ‘80s moments – of ours and our patrons – from the last two decades,” says Spears. “It is also a heartfelt thank you to our devoted listeners. We wouldn’t be here without them.”

Stuck in the ‘80s entertains a longtime global audience of listeners across North America and in such faraway outposts as Australia and New Zealand. Co-host Brad Williams attributes the podcast’s enduring popularity to the duo’s off-air connection.

“Steve and I really are friends, and I think that comes through in our banter,” Williams said. “There’s no one else I would want to be on this podcast time machine with.

Foreigner’s Lou Gramm Rages Against Rock Hall: ‘The Rug Was Pulled From Under Our Feet’
Image
Foreigner’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year was the culmination of a nearly two-decade lobbying effort that roped in everyone from Mark Ronson and Slash to Dave Grohl, Jack Black, and Paul McCartney when they finally made the ballot this year. And when it actually happened, original singer Lou Gramm was ecstatic. “I’m thrilled that we’re finally a part of it,” he told Rolling Stone in April. “For a good number of years, we were not. Foreigner’s Lou Gramm, Rick Wills, Al Greenwood Reunite for Rock Hall of Fame
Image
Foreigner scored more hits than just about any other rock band from their era. But they were never a favorite of critics, and they had to wait 22 years to enter the Hall of Fame after they first reached their period of eligibility. Original frontman Lou Gramm feels the massive success of their 1984 ballad “I Want To Know What Love Is” played a big role in shaping their reputation.

“I love the song, but it pigeonholed us into something that we were not,” he told Rolling Stone earlier this year. “I...

Lou Gramm on Foreigner’s Long-Awaited Rock Hall Induction: ‘Justice Has Been Done’
Image
If you turn on classic-rock radio anywhere in America and listen for more than a few minutes, you’re likely to hear a Foreigner song. “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Feels Like the First Time,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” “Urgent,” and “I Want to Know What Love Is” topped the charts in the Seventies and Eighties, and really never went away. The Future of Classic Rock Tours: One or Two Surviving Members…or None?
Image
In the last few years, Cj Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later.

With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans.

Flashback: Survivor Perform ‘Eye of the Tiger’ With Both Lead Singers in 2013
Image
Rumors of a Van Halen super tour with both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar fronting the band circulated frequently during the past few years, often egged on by Hagar himself. But it wasn’t until after Eddie Van Halen died that the world learned that the trek was actually in the planning stages just about two years ago.

“At a certain point it turned into what we joked as the Kitchen Sink Tour,” Wolfgang Van Halen recently told Howard Stern. “Cause after [my dad] was Ok with that arrangement, it was like,...

Which is Better? #7 – The Lost Boys vs. Fright Night
Image
It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Fright Night versus The Lost Boys.

*Cue People are Strange by The Doors*

Ok, so I grew up with The Lost Boys on my television set and the record of the soundtrack echoing from the stereo system. I have always had a lot of fondness for the 80s glam-vamp teen-comedy that featured some of the big names from the era, with Keifer Sutherland in the role of head-but-not-quite-head vampire, David, Jason Patrick and Corey Haim as brothers Micheal and Sam,...

The Lost Boys

“One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach … All the damn vampires.”

-Grandpa (Barnard Hughes), The Lost Boys

I respectfully disagree with Grandpa’s sentiment. My favorite part about watching the faux coastal fantasia of Santa Carla is all the damn vampires. Despite being very much a time capsule capturing a certain place and cultural moment, The Lost Boys is simultaneously, a bit paradoxically, as immortal as its titular teenage vampires when it comes to being a genre staple. The 1987 horror comedy was helmed by the late great Joel Schumacher, who passed away on June 22nd. It is being celebrated today ahead of its return to Southern California theaters this Thursday at the Mission Tiki Drive-In, on a double bill with that other terrific ’80s vampire horror comedy, Fright Night (1985). It’s hard to articulate just how special and singular The Lost Boys is, but I have to try.

Foreigner Launching Las Vegas Mini-Residency in 2020
Foreigner are heading to Las Vegas’ Venetian Resort in 2020 for a 10-show run at the Venetian Theater. Five concerts will take place between January 24th and February 1st, and another five are slated for April 17th through April 25th.

“If you take a look at Foreigner’s catalog, there are 16 Top 30 hits, and [in planning a show like this] the problem becomes what songs do you leave out,” singer Kelly Hansen told Billboard of the residency. “Do you do some songs acoustically or do you give them all the classic presentation? These are all discussions that...

Mick Jones
Inside ‘Jukebox Hero,’ the New Foreigner Musical
Mick Jones
As Mick Jones tells it, the origins of a jukebox musical featuring the songs of his band Foreigner date back over 40 years, when he found himself stranded in an airport lounge in Atlanta with none other than Diana Ross. “She had just done The Wiz, and said, ‘You know, you have a great song that would really lend itself to a musical,’” Jones recalls. “She said, ‘That song “Juke Box Hero” could be a great stage presentation.’ I said, ‘Wow.’ That song is a pretty ballsy rocker, so for her...

Springsteen sat atop Joel’s piano for part of their performance of “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” as the platform that they were on spun. He also donned his guitar and after a one-two count they launched into “Born to Run” with the audience joining in...

Elton John, Aerosmith, Foreigner honored at lively Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony
Steven Tyler
New York—Sting sang a feisty “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” to Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Foreigner’s Mick Jones and Lou Gramm shared a stage together for the first time in a decade, and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry delivered a spiky “Walk This Way” at the 2013 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies here Thursday night (14). Sure, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is great, but many musicians say the hall they really want to join is the Songwriters Hall of Fame. It’s much less glitzy and has no museum (yet) to show off its wares, but...

The 44th ceremony kicked off with Sting performing a rousing rendition of Elton John's hit "Saturday's All Right for Fightin'," in honor of the Rocket Man, who, along with his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, received the Johnny Mercer Award. (John had been inducted into the Hall in 1992.) Billy Joel paid tribute to Gramm and fellow Foreigner member Mick Jones by leading a sing-along to the...

New York — Sting performed in honor of Elton John, Billy Joel sang snippets of Foreigner's hits when introducing the band and Smokey Robinson debuted part of a new song he wrote about Berry Gordy.

The 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony was full of star power that included Alison Krauss, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Nickelback, Petula Clark, Wiz Khalifa, Jordin Sparks and a video message from Bill Clinton.

Tyler, Perry, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Holly Knight, Jd Souther and Tony Hatch were inducted Thursday into the Songwriters Hall 2013 class in New York City.

John and writing partner Bernie Taupin received the Johnny Mercer award, and Sting kicked off the night with a performance of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Sting also called John and Taupin "my two heroes."

Berry Gordy, Founder & Chairman Motown Records in Los Angeles circa 1980
New York — Berry Gordy will be honored at this year's Songwriters Hall of Fame gala.

The organization announced Tuesday that the Motown founder will receive the Pioneer Award at its 44th annual induction ceremony on June 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

As the head of Motown, Gordy helped establish careers and hits for Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, and Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five. A Broadway musical about Gordy's life, "Motown: The Musical," debuted this week.

B-Sides: I'm Dreaming of a Quickening
Was it all just a bad dream? Nope. I’m afraid Highlander 2: The Quickening actually happened. You know a movie exists in a special stratosphere of bad when the filmmakers spend years releasing alternate versions designed to convince us its immortal badness wasn’t their fault.

I’ll never forget sitting in a theater on opening weekend and staring at the screen in disbelief at what I was seeing. I’ll never forget hearing the disgust in the voice of the man sitting behind me, unable to contain his one disdain the moments the words “Planet Zeist” appeared on the screen.

Cackling alien hitmen with porcupine hairdos, winged backpacks, and hover skates flying (on very visible wires) after Christopher Lambert.

An energy shield surrounding the Earth that cannot be shut off because somehow there isn’t enough energy on the planet to use the off switch – the hell?

Footloose review
Footloose gets the remake treatment, and the end result really isn't too bad at all. Here's our review...

Oh, Mr Bacon. It’s been so long. But I remember. That red tuxedo… That yellow Volkswagen Beetle… That warehouse dance sequence. Because that’s how easy it is to fuel a lifelong obsession with Kevin, with his chiseled cheeks and wayward, fuzzy hair indicative of a lifetime spent sticking errant fingers in wayward sockets. What good is Footloose without that monumental fox of eighties funkiness? Can a fresh-faced imposter do justice to those Sunday shoes? Heck, is it worth his while even fastening his shoelaces?

Footloosers everywhere will be jumpy. As well as making Bacon a poster boy, the original movie delivered an iconic soundtrack stuffed with fist-pumping cheese, turning Kenny Loggins into a legend and inspiring impressionable teens to do strange things on living room carpets. Anyone who rooted for...
