Iman Vellani’s MCU fandom isn’t just another press tour talking point; she’s the genuine article.
Vellani, who plays Pakistani-American teenager Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel on Disney+’s Ms. Marvel, not only has an Iron Man shrine in her childhood bedroom, but she also has a knowledge base that consists of deep cuts such as cross-promotional material between Marvel Studios and Xbox. Ms. Marvel’s creative team was so taken with Vellani’s enthusiasm for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that they took inspiration from her own collection of Iron Man merchandise.
“So back home, I have an Iron Man shrine, basically. And one of the things in it is a bust of Iron Man’s head, but it’s also a cologne. It smells foul, but it looks cool. So before I got cast, I gave Sana [Amanat], our producer, a tour of my room,...

It takes a certain set of balls to let Chumbawamba lyrics introduce your film (“Tubthumping,” of course), but Balls Out isn’t just Any movie. Andrew Disney’s underdog sports comedy is far from conventional, and while it begins like every other “road to athletic redemption” story, a constant mockery of the sports genre rulebook turns this pee-wee effort into a Jv superstar. It’s not exactly a Tom-Brady-caliber showstopper, but more a Ryan-Howard-like slugger that belts a home run whenever jokes connect. Just expect some mighty whiffs to accompany those gut-busting dingers. Honestly, though, who cares – chicks dig the long ball, and in that respect, Disney earns plenty of fans.
The story of Balls Out follows a rag-tag intramural football team, the Panthers, and their path to redemption after disbanding during their freshman year. Even though they were crowned league champions, a crippling injury puts Grant (Nick Kocher) in a wheelchair,...

"Well, then I guess we have no choice than to go on an adventure..." Now this is awesome! Comedian/actor DC Pierson wrote a book called The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To, which director Dan Eckman (of Derrick Comedy's Mystery Team) is trying to get turned into a movie, but it needs our support. So he made a quick 5-minute short film proof-of-concept to show how awesome this would be, and it's pretty cool. Tony Revolori of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Dope stars with Jack Quaid of The Hunger Games. They use a line about how this is like a 3D printer for anything from the comic book, which is a cool pitch, and it works well. I really do want to see more, though hopefully as a movie not a TV show. Thanks to SlashFilm for the tip. Fire this up right away and enjoy,...

A longtime employee of L.A.’s New Beverly Cinema says Quentin Tarantino’s new management has forced her out and is ruining the beloved repertory theater. Julia Marchese, one of a few staffers who stayed on through Tarantino’s takeover last month, was told she would be co-manager of the New Beverly when it re-opened this month after renovations. She says this week she was demoted and unceremoniously forced to quit by Tarantino’s longtime personal assistant Julie McLean, who is now acting as General Manager.
“I went through the last six weeks really thinking Quentin was going to make it better,” Marchese told me today. “The thing that’s most shocking to me is that he’s allowing it and I can’t even talk to him about it. To not even be allowed to state my case is unfair.” She says through the Tarantino-led renovations and October 1 re-opening,...

From starring on the cult NBC show Community to landing a big role in Will Ferrell's upcoming comedy Get Hard, Alison Brie clearly has a lot going on. Despite her busy schedule, she added a new project to her ever-growing résumé by partnering with Adam Scott and Smirnoff for their new campaign, The Party. We got a chance to catch up with Alison about working with another NBC fan favorite in Scott; their upcoming movie, Sleeping With Other People; and how she and the rest of the Community family deal with the ever-looming threat of cancellation. Considering that the show's team is once again waiting to hear if they will get renewed for a sixth season, it was an unfortunately apropos time to be talking about the show's future. Above is the trailer to Intramural, debuting at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month. The comedy teams people from all sorts of comedic backgrounds, including Saturday Night Live, Derrick Comedy and Upright Citizens Brigade. The end result is a comedy about a man who doesn't want to grow up, dedicated instead to reuniting his former intramural football team to settle old scores. Hilarity, some of the fourth-wall-breaking nature, ensues. You might recognize that lead actor, even if you can't exactly place him. Well do your research you lazy bum, that's Jake Lacy. Lacy mostly made his name on TV, popping up on The Office and the late Better With You, though he was unfortunately booted from the underrated, burnt-off-in-the-summer Goodwin Games. He recently graduated to love interest with the sweet upcoming comedy-drama Obvious Child, which A24 is releasing in the summer, a film that also features a who's who...

Over the course of cinematic history, sports movies have developed into their own genre, with films such as Hoosiers and Bull Durham standing out from the field. However, there have been few parodies of the genre, with most of the comedy in such films coming from the situation that the characters find themselves in. This is the area that a new comedy, titled Intramural, aims for. Directed by Andrew Disney, working from a screenplay by Bradley Jackson, the film stars Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharoah, Beck Bennett, D.C. Pierson, Nick Kocher, Brian McElhaney, and Nikki Reed, and the first trailer has now been released. The trailer can be seen below.

Here's your first look at the indie comedy Intramural, starring The Office's Jake Lacy as a college senior who decides he wants to get the gang back together for one last intramural football game before heading off into adulthood. (Try not to get too distracted by the fact that everyone in this movie looks like they're old enough to be finishing Ph.D. programs and not their undergraduate educations.) Even if the setup strains credulity, check out that cast! Kate McKinnon, Beck Bennet, Jay Pharaoh, DC Pierson, and Battlestar Galactica's Michael Hogan.

What does it take to be part of the "Saturday Night Live" band? It turns out musical skill isn't high on the list of priorities. At least, that's the case in the eye of a new comedy short starring Aimee Mann, Andy Kindler and D.C. Pierson.
When Pierson's character shows up to audition as a bass player for the show, all the casting directors want is someone who can believably laugh at the guest host's monologue jokes. After all, they don't have renowned comedians on the show every single week. Sometimes there are athletes or other notable pop culture names whose jokes don't exactly hit.
The short, released online by Flavorwire, is written and directed by Daniel Ralston. Though it's a totally fake version of the actual auditions, chances are you'll notice the over-laughing most of the band does on the show next time you tune in.

The To Do List
Directed by Maggie Carey
Written by Maggie Carey
USA, 2013
The amount of time it takes to exhaust the goodwill one has accrued towards an overqualified and bursting ensemble cast is roughly 70 minutes, if The To Do List is any indication. The film’s high concept and its performers, from Aubrey Plaza to Connie Britton to Alia Shawkat to Clark Gregg, are enough to engender some interest for a while, but eventually, The To Do List peters out, squandering away its likability on a strange, ballsy-for-being-irresponsible message and a muddled third act.
Plaza is Brandy Klark, a cartoonish overachiever who just graduated from her Boise, Idaho high school as its valedictorian, even though most of the kids in her class mock her for her uptight nature and her virginity. Before she heads off to Georgetown University, Brandy is encouraged by her best friends to change up her life sexually,...

Chuck Palahniuk is planning to follow-up his 1996 "Fight Club" book -- and it will arrive as at least one graphic novel, likely more. The original book, of course, was adapted into a movie in 1999, directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Palahniuk's original announcement fell somewhat under the radar during the craziness that was Comic-Con. He mentioned it during the "Ode to Nerds" panel with fellow writers D.C. Pierson, Patrick Rothfuss, Cory Doctorow, Austin Grossman and Robyn Schneider, according to ChickPalahniuk.net.

"Jingle bells. Batman smells. Robin laid an egg." Everyone knows that classic "children's parody rhyme" involving Batman's smelly ways. What if, instead of all the comics, Christopher Nolan's Batman series was based on that rhyme as the source? Our friends at Derrick Comedy—director Dan Eckman, producer Meggie McFadden and DC Pierson—put together this parody trailer for Funny or Die that obviously plays on the current popularity of The Dark Knight Rises, but mixed with the "Batman smells" rhyme. It's short, funny, and will hopefully bring a smile to your face with all the more serious Batman buzz at the moment. "Christopher Nolan picked some unusual source material for the final Dark Knight movie." Here's the video: Eight years after The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to the limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after...

If you're not one of those people, well, you'll probably like them too. Funny is funny. First up is a clip from Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, which is simply a truncated trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, only with Pee-Wee Herman doing all the voices. And all the geek credit for that we-wish-it-were-real poster to your right goes to Gamma Squad. But Pee-Wee isn't the only funny man taking the dour out of Tdkr. DC Pierson, Dan Eckman and Meffie McFadden - three of the core principals behind the really great and underseen Mystery Team - have created a Funny or Die trailer for a movie...

South By Southwest (SXSW) has officially announced the lineup for SXSW Comedy, which will take place from March 10 - 17 in Austin, Texas. The festival's comedy programming has grown considerably since last year, with showcases, live podcast tapings and interactive shows stretching continuously throughout SXSW for the first time. BuzzFocus.com Presents Nerdy Secrets With Mo Fathelbab Episode 2 is up!!!! The latest show was recorded live, in front of a studio audience at The Nerdist Theatre at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood, California on Tuesday, Aug. 30th. We dubbed it The Ramadan Spectacu-allah! because Danielle Kramer, Dan Curry, “Nerdy Kid” Gil, and I cooked up an honest-to-goodness end of Ramadan feast for everyone. The always funny DC Pierson (“Mystery Team”) returned, this time as the special guest co-host. The show kicked off with a brilliant stand-up comedy set by Dan Curry. Then 9-year-old “Nerdy Kid” Gil T. Dominguez-letelier gave us a recap of his favorite summer films in a segment he called “The Summer of Mutants”. He schooled DC and I on how to make a great comic book movie (“more action, less talking”). Then DC and I have an incredibly funny exchange with the panel which consisted of: Azita Ghanizada...

[1] Derrick Comedy may not be a household name quite yet, but it's likely you've stumbled across some of their work before. (At the very least, you're probably aware of its most famous member, Donald Glover.) The comedy group met as students at Nyu, and quickly gained a following for their Internet videos, including "Bro Rape" [2] and "Blowjob Girl," [3] featuring a pre-Office Ellie Kemper. Derrick Comedy then made a leap to the big screen in 2009 with Mystery Team, an underrated indie comedy about three naive high school detectives who get in over their heads. Now the film's director, Dan Eckman, has lined up a couple of new projects that'll reunite him with some of his Derrick Comedy teammates. Read more after the jump. On a recent visit to the Community set, Collider [4] learned that Eckman had signed on to direct an episode of the series, which of course stars his Derrick Comedy colleague Glover.

This is a talented guy who is surrounded by talented people, and there's no doubt that he's a rising director in Hollywood.
It was recently revealed on Collider that Eckman will be directing the 13th episode of Community, which is one of my favorite TV shows right now. It was also revealed that he would be directing an adaptation of the book The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To written by DC Pierson who played one of the lead characters in Mystery Team. It was also revealed that he would be directing an adaptation of the book The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To written by DC Pierson who played one of the lead characters in Mystery Team. The story...

A long time ago, we spoke with renaissance man D.C. Pierson about his novel “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To.” It’s a thrilling tale about a gawky young high school lad who loves to draw and the friendship he strikes up with an even gawkier high school lad who never sleeps at all ever. Of course, freakish occurrences like that don’t go unnoticed, and soon they are running from dark forces that plan all sorts of terrible things for them. It’s endearing, thrilling, and strange. It’s the kind of novel that seems written by a sophomore in high school if that sophomore could actually write as well as he thinks he can. Fortunately, and finally, it’s being turned into a movie, and they’re keeping it all in the family. Mystery Team director Dan Eckman will be taking the reins on this one alongside producer of all things...

If you haven't yet seen Derrick Comedy's hilarious flick Mystery Team, you're missing out on a sorely underrated comedy featuring comedians DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes and Donald Glover from NBC's "Community." Now the film's director Dan Eckman is working with at least one member of the comedy group again as Collider has learned that the filmmaker will adapt Pierson's coming-of-age novel The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To. Eckman co-write the script with Pierson and Meggie McFadden (who also wrote, produced and starred in Mystery Team) and they're shopping it to studios now. Unlike Mystery Team, the film is actually a charming coming-of-age tale that also has flares of sci-fi and fantasy. Here's the official synopsis of the book: A wildly original and hilarious debut novel about the typical high school experience: the homework, the awkwardness, and the mutant creatures from another galaxy. When Darren ...

You may not recognize the name Dan Eckman, but if you aren.t at least somewhat familiar with his comedy troupe, Derrick, you are missing out on some of the funniest videos on the web. Eckman rarely appears in these videos but stays behind the camera and lets his stars, one of which is Community star and Twitter king Don Glover, handle the acting. If you haven.t seen Bro Rape, Keyboard Kid, or Blowjob Girl, I suggest you head over to YouTube right away and get searching. Eckman also directed Derrick.s first foray into the feature realm, Mystery Team, and according to Collider he.s setting up his next feature right now with the adaptation of Derrick alum DC Pierson.s novel The Boy Who Couldn.t Sleep And Never Had To. The story follows the high school trials and tribulations of Darren Bennett, a friendless outsider whose...

‘Mystery Team’ Director Dan Eckman Plans Adaptation of ‘The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To’
Collider reports that Dan Eckman, who is best known for 2010′s excellent Mystery Team, will be c0-writing and directing an adaptation of DC Pierson‘s novel The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To. Eckman has been a longtime collaborator of Pierson’s, as they both started together in the New York-based sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy. Here’s the plot of the novel:
When Darren Bennett meets Eric Lederer, there’s an instant connection. They share a love of drawing, the bottom rung on the cruel high school social ladder and a pathological fear of girls. Then Eric reveals a secret: He doesn’t sleep. Ever. When word leaks out about Eric’s condition, he and Darren find themselves on the run. Is it the government trying to tap into Eric’s mind, or something far darker? It could be that not sleeping is only part...

To Do List or The Hand Job? Which one do you like better? I have no idea, but this ‘hand job’ thing sounds interesting.
So, of course it’s going to be a sex comedy, and of course it will have some great cast!
The project is both written and will be directed by Maggie Carey, and according to the latest reports, Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson will join the cast that already includes Aubrey Plaza, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Scott Porter, D.C. Pierson and Dominic Dierkes. That’s not bad at all!
To Do List follows a type-a, studious girl who graduates high school and hasn’t done anything with a guy.

The To Do List, formerly known as “The Hand Job,” has gotten some new cast members added to its already impressive list of stars, including Aubrey Plaza who plays a young woman who wants to head into college with a wealth of sexual experience under her belt, and so spends her post-senior summer trying to check off items on a sexual to-do list. The latest actors to sign on for the shenanigans are Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson, though no word yet on who they are playing in the film.
Connie Britton will play the main character’s “liberal, free-spirited mother,” Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat are two of her best friends; and Scott Porter will play a guy in a band that Plaza has a crush on. Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson (along with their Derrick Comedy co-member Don Glover) will play lifeguards; Bill Hader will be their stoned boss at the pool.

The tides are about to get stranger for Johnny Depp.
The Wrap reports that Depp is "close to a deal" for a fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean," surprising... well, nobody. The latest movie in the franchise, "On Stranger Tides," just passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, and Jerry Bruckheimer is rumored to be meeting intensively with writers to polish up the screenplay.
We can hardly imagine what shenanigans Captain Jack Sparrow will get into this time, but we're sure the masterminds at Disney have something clever up their sleeves.
In the news after the jump, some major comedians check in to "Hotel Transylvania," a "Zombieland" star thinks the sequel won't ever happen and a brilliant moviemaker signs Christopher Walken on as Zeus.

Sony Pictures is amassing quite a cast for their new animated 3D family comedy, "Hotel Transylvania," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson are set to star in The To Do List (previously called The Hand Job). While these days he’s generally found trying to round up superheroes in the likes of Iron Man and Thor as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson, Clark Gregg is looking to switch things up a little bit, signing on to be part of what can only be described as a sprawling cast for Maggie Carey’s directorial debut The To Do List. Formerly known by its spicier title of The Hand Job, Carey’s script follows a young woman (Parks and Recreation/Scott Pilgrim’s Aubrey Plaza) on her way to college after graduating high school. But the studious, driven girl realises that she’s seemingly lacking in sexual experience and shocks her friends by deciding to try everything once.Carey (who also happens to be Mrs Bill Hader) has rounded up a truly solid bunch of talented types for the film, with Hader, Gregg, Rachel Bilson, Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman,...

Nobody in their right mind thought that the upcoming Aubrey Plaza comedy The Hand Job would be able to keep its title if it wanted to get wide distribution, so it’s not a surprise that it’s going by a new, less explicit name, The To Do List. ThePlaylist has learned of two additions to the newly-titled movie’s cast, and they’re none other than Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson. Exact details of their roles haven’t been given out, but they suspect that the former will be playing Plaza‘s father, while the latter is appearing as her sister. Those were apparently the two major roles that still needed to be cast, so that prediction makes sense to me.

The coming of age sex comedy The To Do List, formerly called The Hand Job, has been on our radar since it began to assemble a massive cast of young comedic talent. Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Scott Pilgrim) plays a young woman who wants to head into college with a wealth of sexual experience under her belt, and so spends her post-senior summer trying to check off items on a sexual to-do list. The latest actors to sign on for the shenanigans are Clark Gregg (Marvel Studios' bedrock player) and Rachel Bilson (The O.C., New York, I Love You). The To Do List is written and will be directed by Maggie Carey. She's married to Bill Hader, and here's what he had to say about the film a couple months back: It’s about her playing an type-a, studious girl who graduates high school and hasn’t done anything with a guy.

If you've ever wrapped a towel around your neck and pretended to fly, humming or whistling John Williams' iconic theme song, you've known the joy - even if it's just momentarily - of being Superman. If recapturing that feeling is something you desire, I can think of no better way to accomplish that than through the monumentous Blu-ray collection of The Superman Motion Picture Anthology.
This astounding collection accumulates everything a Superman fan could possibly want: Superman The Movie, Superman The Movie: Extended Edition, Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and Superman Returns. But not only does it include the films themselves (all complete with commentary tracks except Returns, itself loaded with a nearly three hour making-of documentary), this eight disk set contains over twenty hours of bonus features - enough to turn even the passing fan into a downright Superman historian.
