Tony Noms Snubs & Surprises: None For Big Names Steve Carell & Michael Imperioli; Little Love For Brit Hit ‘Patriots’ & Hearty Welcome For ‘Outsiders’
Image
Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.

Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.

Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

Tony Awards snubs: ‘Patriots,’ Steve Carell, Chip Zien …
Image
With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.

The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

2024 Tony predictions by show: ‘Cabaret,’ ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ ‘Stereophonic’ will lead nominations
Image
A new musical, a musical revival and a new play with music will dominate the 2024 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. The latest revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret,” fresh off a smash run on the West End, and the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” that is loosely based on the life of Alicia Keys and her music will both net at least seven nominations. New works “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love” and “Suffs” and the starry revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s notorious flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will also earn substantial nominations tallies.

Playwright David Adjmi‘s “Stereophonic” will lead this year’s crop of plays and play revivals with at least five nominations. Right behind are five other works – two new shows and three revivals – that will all tie at least four nominations apiece,...

Image
The 2022 Outer Critics Circle nominations were announced Tuesday. They honor the best of the 2021-2022 Broadway and Off-Broadway season. “The Lehman Trilogy” scored the most nominations with nine bids, followed closely by the Off-Broadway musicals “Harmony” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” which scored eight nominations apiece.

Special Achievement Awards will be presented to “How I Learned to Drive” stars Johanna Day, David Morse and Mary-Louise Parker, as well as “Lackawanna Blues” star Ruben Santiago-Hudson, to mark their outstanding returns to roles they originated two decades ago. Trailer for 'The Rainbow Experiment' About a High School Unraveling
"It's nobody's fault. And everybody's responsibility." Gravitas Ventures has released the trailer for an indie "surreal mystery" drama titled The Rainbow Experiment, which first premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival (the anti-Sundance fest that takes place at the same time/place) at the beginning of this year. This trailer has been out for a while, but we haven't featured it yet, and the film is opening in just a few weeks. The Rainbow Experiment is about how things spiral out of control in a high school in Manhattan when a terrible accident involving a science experiment injures a kid for life. Starring Christian Coulson, Kevin Kane, Chris Beetem, Vandit Bhatt, Francis Benhamou, and more. Watch the trailer if you're curious. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Christina Kallas' The Rainbow Experiment, from YouTube: The story takes place in a high school where things spiral out of control when...

Biff Review: ‘The Rainbow Experiment’ Brings Volatile Tension to a High School-Set Incident
My biggest takeaway from Christina Kallas’ The Rainbow Experiment is that teachers really don’t get paid enough in this country. Think about new technologies, entitled parents, emotionally confused kids with no outlet, and dwindling budgets forcing them to spend out-of-pocket for resources all while a guillotine hangs above their necks if grade thresholds aren’t met. Suddenly those idealistic educators hoping to change the world find themselves caught in a futile game wherein job security becomes paramount at the children’s expense. Everyone’s back is pressed against the wall as a ticking time bomb threatens to explode … and I’m not even talking about the possibility of someone walking in with a loaded arsenal and grudge to bear. Has today’s stress increased or are we simply too close to it?

Look at the kids too because they have it just as bad. Bullying is no longer isolated...

‘The Rainbow Experiment’ Trailer: A High School Reels From A Terrible Accident in Unnerving Slamdance Drama
Google the words “rainbow experiment chemistry” and the internet will provide a wealth of seemingly kid-friendly directives for how to use science to “make a rainbow,” an idea that seems fun enough until another link pops up: a safety alert from the American Chemical Society about an experiment gone very, very wrong.

It’s that sort of tension — between the possibility of academic discovery and out-and-out terror — that frames up Christina Kallas’ Slamdance drama, “The Rainbow Experiment,” which follows what happens after one of those eponymous experiments leads to unexpected consequences, one that indict and unravel whole scores of people and institutions.

Zoe Lister-Jones and Francis Benhamou in Arranged (2007)
Arranged
Zoe Lister-Jones and Francis Benhamou in Arranged (2007)
Film Movement

Well meaning but all too obvious in its message, Arranged depicts the burgeoning friendship between two women -- one Orthodox Jewish and the other Muslim -- with all the depth and sophistication of an Afterschool Special. The film, written by Stefan Schaefer and co-directed by him and Diane Crespo, is essentially preaching to the choir. It is playing an exclusive theatrical engagement at New York's Quad Cinema.

Rochel Zoe Lister Jones) and Nasira (Francis Benhamou) are beginning teachers at a public school in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. Rochel's ultra-conservative clothing and Nasira's headscarf make them stand out at work, with even their principal Marcia Jean Kurtz), a secular Jew, urging them to adopt more modernistic ways.

Both women become caught up in their families' traditional efforts to see them married off. A matchmaker arranges a series of increasingly dire dates for Rochel, while Nasira's father imports a singularly appropriate relative from their home country.

The similarity of their predicaments helps bring the women together, with their growing bond becoming the cause of curiosity among the students and deep concern within their families. Ultimately, true friendship wins out, with the pair overcoming the prejudices of their community and even finding true love with suitable men along the way.

The beautiful lead actresses are appealing, even if their characters never prove particularly interesting. Less effective are the performances by several of the supporting players, who ultimately are unable to overcome the stereotypical aspects of their broadly written roles.
