Image
What do The Fox and the Hound, Fantasia, and The Manchurian Candidate all have in common? They're all movies the cast and crew of Mufasa: The Lion King would place next to the Disney prequel's physical release on their shelves. Barry Jenkins's box-office-busting photorealistic animated musical drama is coming to store shelves on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 1, and to celebrate, Collider can share an exclusive video with the stars involved talking through what films deserve to sit with their creation. Whether for sentimental reasons, a Disney connection, or because they prefer to be neat and alphabetized, each person featured has a different answer for how they're displaying the new release with the movies they own.

The video opens with one of the film's two stars, Kelvin Harrison Jr., who plays Taka/Scar. Considering Mufasa is all about brothers, he thinks The Fox and the Hound...

‘The Studio,’ ‘Mid-Century Modern,’ ‘Mufasa,’ and the best of what’s streaming this weekend
Image
Welcome to the Gold Ticket, your VIP guide to the best of award-worthy pop culture for the weekend ahead, curated by the Gold Derby team of experts. (March 28 - March 30)

The main stream: The Studio

It’s not cinema, it's TV.

Created by Seth Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg alongside Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez, The Studio takes viewers behind the scenes of an embattled movie studio after a reshuffling of power puts Rogen's Matt Remick, a cinephile with the best intentions, at the top of the mountain. The 10 episode series — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Apple TV+ — reveals how the proverbial sausage is (or is not) made and how the quest for great art is complicated by money and ego in a uniquely funny series that should appeal to everyone regardless of their familiarity with the so-called "industry."

"We'll See": Kelvin Harrison Jr. Reacts to Potential Lion King Spin-Offs After 'Mufasa's Box Office Success
Image
Disney fans are still raving about Mufasa: The Lion King. Released in November 2024, the prequel film takes viewers on the journey of Mufasa’s coming-of-age story, and how his relationship with Scar became estranged — Kelvin Harrison Jr. shines as the film’s villain. The film was a dream come true for Harrison Jr., who’d been a longtime fan. With all the buzz surrounding the film continuing, he spoke with Collider about whether he’d be reprising his role in another Lion King project at Disney. He said:

"Oh, it's such a huge honor. I've talked about it a lot, but the original Lion King came out in '94. That was the year I was born, so it felt like my birth project in a lot of ways. I've been a big fan of that movie. It's one of my favorite Disney movies. Scar is definitely one of my favorite Disney villains.

'Mufasa: The Lion King' Set to Stream on Disney+ Starting Late March

Per People Magazine, Mufasa: The Lion King will hit Disney+ on Mar. 26, a few days over 3 months since the movie hit theaters on Dec. 20. The performance of the film has been exceptional, even over the weekend when it placed 8th place on the box office chart with a...

Mufasa Becomes Only The 10th Movie To Reach This 2024 Box Office Milestone
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King is continuing to roar its way to success. The latest Lion King movie has thrived in a slow January, competing against a small field consisting of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and several other new releases. Wolf Man and One of Them Days were poised to top the box office over the holiday weekend. Even with Martin Luther King Day offering a chance for a booming box office, it has been a slow week. Still, despite only a trickle at the box office, Disney's lions are thriving.

According to a report by Variety, the Lion King prequel is expected to end the weekend with $209.8 million domestically and $588.4 million worldwide. With that total, it has officially become the 10th 2024 movie to reach the $200 million milestone domestically. It sits ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which earned $196 million, and just behind Sonic 3's $218 million total.

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Fends off ‘Wolf Man’ at Box Office
Image
The beginning of the year is usually a quieter time for movie releases, and January 2025 is no exception. Although there are some exciting new releases, a 2024 blockbuster has managed to climb back to the top of the box office this weekend. In an interesting turn of events, Mufasa: The Lion King is the number-one film at the box office this past weekend, in a MLK holiday weekend box office haul that is one of the lowest in years.

According to a box office report from Deadline, the CGI Disney prequel directed by Barry Jenkins beat out new releases in a weekend that was the second lowest of the last ten years, not counting 2021, which was during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mufasa took in $16.5 million over the past four days, while the Keke Palmer and Sza-led comedy One of Them Days took the number 2 spot with around $14-15 million, barely losing out to the Disney film.

The impressive recent box office performance of Mufasa: The Lion King sets Disney up for a live-action Lion King sequel in the near future. Directed by Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King not only follows the origin story of Mufasa, Simba's father, but also Scar, Mufasa's brother who ran astray. Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) leads the cast of Mufasa: The Lion King alongside Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and Thandiwe Newton.

While Mufasa: The Lion King didn't make nearly as much at the worldwide box office as its 2019 predecessor, it was still one of the highest-grossing blockbusters of 2024. 2019's The Lion King directed by Jon Favreau remains one of the highest-grossing movies of all time with its whopping $1.662 billion box office total. Remarkably, The Lion King wasn't even the top-performing film of that historic year at the box office (Avengers: Endgame...

The Chi: How & Why Jason Mitchell's Brandon Died
Image
If you were a casual fan of "The Chi," the South Side Chicago drama series that premiered in 2018, you were probably a bit confused when major character Brandon Johnson (Jason Mitchell) was suddenly written out of the show. Season 2 ended with the character in a rough, complicated spot, letting fans wonder in the break between seasons just how he was going to handle all the chaos. The opening of season 3 revealed that he wouldn't be handling it at all. He died off-screen between seasons -- or, as fans of "The Simpsons" might put it, Brandon died on the way back to his home planet.

It's not unlike what happened in the sixth and final season of "House of Cards," where Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) was revealed to have died off-screen, even though audiences certainly knew this was not the writers' plan back for him when they were finishing up season...

‘Mufasa’ Star Tiffany Boone Dreaded Singing. Now She’s on the Oscar Shortlist for Best Original Song
Image
Tiffany Boone was done with voiceover auditions when the script for an unspecified lioness landed in her inbox.

“I just thought I was so bad at voiceovers,” Boone confesses. “I’d been trying for years and never booked a single thing. I quit probably a year or two before I got this audition — obviously, my agents didn’t listen and sent me this anyway.”

She owes her agents a thank-you note. Boone, 37, not only landed a part in the Disney prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, but was cast as central figure Sarabi, the queen of Pride Rock, otherwise known as Mufasa’s mate (and Simba’s future mom).

It was, to hear Boone tell it, kismet, seeing as how The Lion King was her favorite film growing up. “I’m not lying,” she says. “Lion King was number one. Number two was Aladdin. And number three was Beauty and the Beast.

Mufasa: The Lion King Box Office Passes Huge Global Milestone, Reversing Grim Outlook In Weekend 3
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King has hit a major milestone that pushes it much closer to profitability after three weekends. The 2024 movie is a prequel to Disney's photorealistic CG-animated 2019 remake, following the origin story of the future king Mufasa (Aaron Pierre). The Mufasa: The Lion King release hit an early snag in its opening weekend when it fell severely below its original projections, earning just $35.4 million in North America and taking No. 2 behind the other new release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to close out its third weekend in theaters with a cumulative box office total of $476 million worldwide. This makes it just the 10th movie of the year to pass the $475 million milestone and leaves it neck and neck with the current No. 9 movie of 2024, Venom: The Last Dance ($476.8 million). This news comes at the same time that...

Timon and Pumbaa Were Actually the Best Parts of 'Mufasa: The Lion King'
Image
While Mufasa: The Lion King might not have been a prequel anyone asked for, there were certainly aspects of the film that made it a worthwhile watch. The movie follows the origin story of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) and chronicles his days as a young cub before he became the king everyone remembers. After losing his parents during a flash flood, Mufasa finds himself far away from home where he meets Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), the prince of a nearby pride. Alone and without his family, Mufasa is adopted by Eshe (Thandiwe Newton), Taka’s mother, which subsequently made the cubs de facto brothers. Elated with their new sibling, Mufasa and Taka grow up side by side and remain loyal to one another for most of their lives. However, Taka eventually grows to become Scar, which ultimately casts a sad shadow on the entire narrative of the film.

Told in a series of flashbacks,...

Every Song In Mufasa: The Lion King, Ranked
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King's soundtrack, composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, brings new life to the beloved franchise with a catchy and emotional score. Miranda’s signature style shines through, blending powerful African melodies with more contemporary elements that fit quite well with the iconic Disney story. While it might not be one of the best soundtracks featured in Disney movies, it still brings a lot of heart and energy, giving fans something fresh to enjoy from The Lion King universe.

Among the standout tracks, "Bye Bye" and "I Always Wanted A Brother" truly shine as the best of the collection. Capturing the emotional core of the 2024 Lion King installment, all the songs, but especially these two, elevate the legendary tale to a modern story worth giving a watch. With refreshingly brilliant deliveries from the cast, the soundtrack is a must-listen for anyone who loves The Lion King movies.

Mufasa's Can You Feel The Love Tonight Replacement Song Means It Can Win An Oscar 30 Years After The Lion King
Image
The following contains spoilers for Mufasa: The Lion KingMufasa: The Lion King's answer to The Lion King's Oscar-winning song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" could earn it an Oscar thirty years after The Lion King won an Academy Award in the same category. The Disney prequel builds off the legacy of The Lion King in a number of ways, ranging from deliberate shout-outs to clever subversions. One connection between the films is a big musical number that pushes their respective romantic subplots. "Tell Me It's You" is between Mufasa and Sarabi and follows the pair as they finally acknowledge their growing feelings for one another.

It's one of Mufasa: The Lion King's big triumphant moments, and is one of the better tracks in the musical. The success of the song also means that it's been short-listed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Mufasa's Chances To Win Best Original Song At The Oscars Are Already Hurt Thanks To 1 Decision
Image
The chances of Mufasa: The Lion King leaving the Oscars with a win under its belt have been negatively impacted, thanks to its nomination choices in one category. Serving as both a prequel and a sequel to The Lion King, the Disney live-action movie explores the life of Simba's father, Mufasa, before he climbed the ranks to become king of Pride Rock. Directed by Barry Jenkins, the movie explores Mufasa and Simba's family tree and depicts how Mufasa was forced to deal with loss and betrayal on his journey to becoming king.

Similar to the 2019 The Lion King live-action movie, Mufasa has divided critics but has been deemed an improvement on its predecessor. It's also financially successful, grossing more than $200 million and breaking box-office milestones. The movie is currently on the shortlist for the 2025 Academy Awards in two categories: Best Visual Effects and Best Original Song. There are hopes...

Can Lin-Manuel Miranda win Oscar #1 for the Mediocre Mufasa: The Lion King?
Image
One of Hollywood’s most promising names in the past decade has been Lin-Manuel Miranda. After his stunning success on Broadway, dozens of films have called up the songwriter for his expertise. This has been great for the musician and actor, who racked up an Emmy win, five Emmy nominations, and two Oscar nominations since 2017. Miranda’s latest contribution to Disney comes with Mufasa: The Lion King. Building on the foundation of Disney’s iconic franchise, Miranda finds himself in the Oscar race once again. Meanwhile, with visual effects awards in flux, Mufasa hopes to hear its name on Oscar nomination morning in more than one category.

Tiffany Boone Says ‘Therapy and a Lot of Coaching’ Got Her Over a Fear of Singing for ‘Mufasa’
Image
Tiffany Boone says only through “therapy and a lot of coaching” was she able to get over her intense fear of singing, for which – like “Mufasa: The Lion King” co-star Aaron Pierre – she had precious little background.

“Intimidating – just because I’m afraid of singing in front of people. I had phobia, I no longer [do],” Boone, who stars as Sarabi in the film, told TheWrap. “When I started auditioning, I didn’t even know I’d have to sing. Like, ‘Oh, one of those roles where you don’t have to sing,’ and then last minute [they] were like, ‘Alright, now sing something.’ And I was like, ‘Excuse me?’ So I had a lot of fear around it, but through some therapy and a lot of coaching and the incredible team.”

Boone continued: “Lin-Manuel Miranda’s team really supported me. I was able to step into and have some fun, and...

Disney Reignites an Old Controversy with Mufasa's White Lion Villain
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel/sequel to 2019's The Lion King, itself a remake of the 1994 animated classic. Mufasa sees Rafiki telling the story of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) to his granddaughter, Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter). Kiara and the audience learn how Mufasa became king of the Pride Lands, how his brother Scar, formerly named Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), got his namesake, and how a rift grew between the brothers.

Mufasa's main antagonist is Kiros (Mads Mikkelsen), a white lion who looks to kill every bloodline so that he is the true Lion King. Mufasa: The Lion King's intent with Kiros is a commentary on colonization, but there might be another underlying reason behind making the villain of a Lion King movie, specifically a white lion. It all comes back to a popular manga, one that many have accused Disney of ripping off. While Disney has denied these claims,...

On December 23, 1935, exactly 89 years ago today, Walt Disney sent out a memo to Don Graham, head of the studio’s internal training and orientation classes. The letter outlines what Disney values in an animator, and what he values in animation. “The point must be made clear to the men that...

Box Office: ‘Sonic 3’ Bounds Over the Hedge With $62M Opening, ‘Mufasa’ Limps to $35M
Image
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gave theaters an early Christmas present this weekend, opening ahead of expectations with a $62 million domestic debut. That’s the second-best December start ever for a PG pic since The Chronicles of Narnia: The Witch, the Lion and the Wardrobe almost 20 years ago in 2005, not adjusted for inflation.

That’s no small feat, especially considering Sonic 3 went up against Hollywood’s most formidable purveyor of PG fare — Disney. After a string of mega wins this year, the studio hit a bump with Mufasa: The Lion King, which came in notably behind expectations with a domestic debut of $35 million. Not that Disney has nothing to crow about; the studio has crossed the $5 billion mark in global ticket sales. It’s the first time any studio has done so since before the pandemic, and the sixth time Disney has done so since 2010.

Heading into the weekend, Sonic 3 was...

Mufasa: The Lion King Box Office (North America): Release Day Update(Photo Credit – YouTube)

While Sonic 3 is headed for a splendid debut at the US box office, Mufasa: The Lion King is expected to come below the predicted range. The Disney flick has a lower rating than Sonic the Hedgehog 3, as well. Previously, it was expected to earn between $177-$192 million worldwide in its debut weekend, but that number has now drastically decreased. Keep scrolling for the deets.

Mufasa received an A- on CinemaScore, and the Rotten Tomatoes score included a score of 57% for critics, while the audience gave it 89%. The musical drama by Barry Jenkins has an incredible voice cast with Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and John Kani reprising their roles from the previous movie. Mufasa: The Lion King Repeats The Same Ridiculous Sin As Solo: A Star Wars Story
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Mufasa: The Lion King."

Making a prequel to any story can be a challenge. It's a true double-edged sword. On the one hand, if you're being tasked with telling the story before the events of an earlier one, it means that audiences responded well to the latter. It's rare, at least, for an ill-liked or financially unsuccessful film to get a prequel, so audiences must have liked the first film enough. But the downside is that because audiences like the first story, it means that they kind of know where any prequel has to end. Even the best types of prequels struggle against this.

If you watch "The Godfather Part II," for example, you inherently know that Vito Corleone will rise up through the ranks of the Mob to become the eponymous character of the original 1972 classic from director Francis Ford Coppola. That doesn't mean...

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Director Barry Jenkins Gets Biblical on His Virtual Production Roller-Coaster Ride
Image
How did Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-winning director of “Moonlight,” find himself making “Mufasa: The Lion King” with the same virtual production tools that Jon Favreau used on “The Lion King” remake? Simple: He instantly fell in love with Jeff Nathanson’s prequel script and wanted to play in the same high-tech sandbox as Favreau and James Cameron.

“When I first read the script, I was surprised to find so many things about ‘The Lion King’ universe that excited me,” Jenkins told IndieWire. “This very biblical, ancestral story about the origin of Mufasa and the Pride Lands, the idea of transcending tribalism and how we can lead ourselves from that and replace it with community.

“I just thought all those things were just so wonderful, and the canvas was so large that I had to make the film,” he added. “And because Favreau’s film was done this way, it made...
