Lakers Pick LeBron James’ Teen Son, Bronny, In NBA Draft, Creating League’s First Ever Father-Son Duo
Image
It’s been years in the making, and today the Los Angeles Lakers chose 19-year-old Bronny James with pick No. 55 in the NBA draft.

The selection will unite the teen with his father, all-time great LeBron James, on the Lakers roster, the first-ever father-son duo in the league’s history to play at the same time, much less on the same team. The move creates not only a compelling box office draw but fulfills a stated dream of the elder James: to play with his son in the NBA.

After winning multiple titles, Mvp awards and being selected as an All Star every season in his 20-year career, the 39-year-old superstar had said repeatedly that the one thing left he wanted in basketball was to play on the same NBA team with his son. The elder James has softened that stance somewhat in recent months, indicating that playing against his...

Carlos Alcaraz Tops Rafael Nadal in Tiebreak at Inaugural Netflix Slam in Las Vegas
Image
“Ok, I can die now.”

So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.

The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. The fact that it happened was a bit of a coup, too, as it was rescheduled last year due to Nadal...

A Lakers legend, Gasol’s last NBA game was in March of 2019 when, shortly after signing with the Milwaukee Bucks, a team that looked perhaps one star short of their first NBA title in nearly half a century, Gasol’s season and NBA career were ended prematurely by a stress fracture. A year later, he signed for Fc Barcelona’s men’s basketball team, where he began his professional career more than 20 years ago, to prepare for his final appearance with the Spanish Men’s National Team at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Spain’s Oscar Entry ‘Champions’ Special-Needs Players
Former Los Angeles Lakers star Pau Gasol reflects on special-needs sports and “Champions,” Spain’s Oscar entry, a blockbuster hit on home turf and sold almost worldwide.

“Champions” turns on an off-the-rails Spanish coach sentenced to train a basketball team of special-needs players. Are such teams common in Spain?

Fortunately, there are more and more initiatives. The film’s inspired by Aderes, from Burjassot near Valencia, that won 12 Spanish basketball championships in a row.

Three years ago, I incorporated a basketball program for people with intellectual disabilities into my summer camp, Pau Gasol Academy. It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to play basketball with people who live the sport with an enormous level of joy and embody powerful values, becoming an example

for all of us.

“The more they practice, the more they socialize, they happier they are,” says the director of Los Amigos club in “Champions.” Is this your experience?...
