Apple TV+ Picks Up New Shows From Robert Rodriguez, Rupert Wyatt, and Justin Kurzel
Apple TV+ continues to grow their slate of original projects with the orders of three new series that will be developed by directors Robert Rodriguez (Alita: Battle Angel), Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Justin Kurzel (Assassin’s Creed).

Robert Rodriguez is set to direct and produce a series based on a comic book by Richard Dominguez called El Gato Negro a.k.a. The Black Cat with Diego Boneta (Terminator: Dark Fate), who will star in and produce the show. The story centers on “the intergenerational exploits of two crime-fighting heroes in South Texas. The first is a young man who takes up the mantle of a fabled local hero to avenge the death of his best friend, while the other is his grandfather, a lucha (Mexican wrestler) who turned to crime-busting decades earlier.”

Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Robert Rodriguez and Diego Boneta are adapting Mexican comic book “El Gato Negro” into a TV series for Apple TV+, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

The MGM Television-produced project, which is in the early stages of development at the forthcoming streaming service, would be directed and executive produced by Rodriguez and star Boneta, who would also executive produce. “Supergirl” writer Eric Carrasco is writing the script, with Joel Novoa set as a co-producer for the potential series.

Created by Richard Dominguez, the “El Gato Negro” comic is set in South Texas and centers on the intergenerational exploits of two crime-fighting heroes: one a young man who takes up the mantle of a fabled local hero to avenge the death of his best friend, the other his grandfather, a lucha (Mexican wrestler) who went into the vigilante business years before.

‘El Gato Negro: Nocturnal Warrior’: Diego Boneta To Star In MGM TV’s Comic Book Adaptation
MGM Television is developing a television series based on Richard Dominguez’s Latino comic book series, El Gato Negro: Nocturnal Warrior. Diego Boneta is attached to star in the series as the titular hero and also will executive produce under his production company, Three Amigos. Joel Novoa (Arrow) will co-executive produce.

El Gato Negro first was published in 1993 by Azteca Productions and sold out all 5,000 copies of the first-run edition within two months.

MGM Television will produce and MGM will internationally distribute the series and are interviewing showrunners and writers to complete the creative team. Andrew Mittman, MGM’s Svp Television Production and Development, will oversee the series for MGM Television.
