Three of his influences for film-making are George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino.

His favorite films are Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) , Apocalypse Now (1979), Baraka (1992), and Reservoir Dogs (1992).

Although he was born and raised in England, his parents are Welsh (his mother and father are from Usk and Pontypool). He visited his grandparents in Wales frequently as a child.

He is the first director to have directed both a Godzilla and a Star Wars film.
