The School For Good And Evil 2: Cast, Story & Everything We Know About A Potential Sequel
Image
While Disney has proven that almost everybody has a soft spot for fairy tales, the 2022 Netflix movie The School for Good and Evil takes a look at the classic stories of princes, princesses, and evil queens from an entirely new perspective. Based on the young adult novels by Soman Chainani, the film centers on best friends Agatha and Sophie, who are from a small village where nothing magical ever happens. When they discover a magical book, they are swept away to the School for Good and Evil, where heroes and villains from fairy tales are real figures of history.

Much to their surprise, Sophie is placed in the School for Evil, and Agatha is assigned to the School for Good. With eight books in the School for Good and Evil series, there’s a lot of potential for a continuing film franchise. It’s been two years since the first movie premiered on Netflix,...

Paul Feig Praises Streamers That “Stepped Up” As Studios Cut Back
Image
Although the evolution of streaming remains a divisive topic in Hollywood, Paul Feig is not one to turn up his nose at opportunity.

After his latest film Jackpot! premiered on Prime Video in August, the director recently called streaming platforms “a blessing for filmmakers who simply want to get their movies made” amid an ongoing decline in production following last year’s strikes.

“We’d all love to be making theatrical films with big releases but with the studios cutting back on their output, the streamers have really stepped up to let us tell our stories with real budgets,” Feig told Empire.

Feig previously helmed Netflix‘s 2022 adaptation of the Soman Chainani young adult fantasy novel The School for Good and Evil.

Most recently, he directed Jackpot!, which stars Akwafina as Katie, a wannabe actor who, in 2030, wins the lucrative, multi-billion-dollar “Grand Lottery” jackpot. She has until sundown to collect her prize,...

Poorly Reviewed 2022 Netflix Original Gets Rousing Defense From Director Paul Feig
Image
Critics accused The School for Good and Evil of being a Harry Potter ripoff, but director Paul Feig passionately defends the film, highlighting its unique qualities and the popularity of the book series. Despite similarities in setting and themes, the movie focuses on friendship, the concept of good and evil, and the role of fairy tales, distinguishing it from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Harsh critiques make a sequel unlikely for The School for Good and Evil, despite the potential for future movies based on the book series.

The director of The School for Good and Evil has leaped to defend his movie from overwhelmingly negative criticism a year after its release. Based on Soman Chainani's book, the 2022 Netflix movie explores the idea of two separate schools for fairy tale heroes and villains. When two best friends join the schools and are placed in positions they never would've guessed for themselves,...

The 25 Most-Watched Netflix Movies Of All Time
Image
Netflix measures viewership uniquely based on its subscription-based revenue model, categorizing viewers as "starters," "watchers," and "completers." The most-watched movies on Netflix represent a mix of audience favorites and well-promoted films, rather than purely the highest-rated content. A variety of factors contribute to the success of Netflix movies, including star power, existing fan bases, talented directors, and compelling storylines.

The original streaming giant Netflix has hundreds upon thousands of programs available to stream from the comfort of the couch, and the Netflix most watched movies roster is full of exciting possibilities. Viewers have noticed by now that Netflix has a Top Ten category, ranking the most watched programs on their service so that audiences can stay up to date on the most popular content. However, the Top Ten really only chronicles what's being watched that week, and is not necessarily the most-watched of all time. The streaming service has always...

39 Author Cameos in Book Adaptations
Soman Chainani
Some of the greatest movies and TV shows have come from books, whether they be adult fiction, historical fiction, romance or Young Adult fantasy or dystopia. Without their authors, these adaptations — and whole worlds — would certainly not exist, so it only makes sense that they should get a chance to appear on screen in their stories, even for a moment.

Netflix has featured many author cameos in young adult adaptations of films or shows — from Soman Chainani in “The School for Good and Evil” to Leigh Bardugo in the first season of “Shadow and Bone.” Jenny Han has appeared in her “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” films, as well as the first season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” on Prime Video. She also appears in “Xo, Kitty,” her newest series starring Anna Cathcart. Judy Blume makes an iconic appearance in the theatrical release of “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

Image
Exclusive: Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy) and Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) are attached to star in an untitled spy comedy in very early development at Paramount, Deadline has learned.

Jenny Bicks (Welcome to Flatch) is set to pen the script, which is said to involve a failed double agent who becomes an unlikely success, based off an original pitch. Paul Feig (The School for Good and Evil) is eyeing to direct and will also produce alongside Laura Allen Fischer for Feigco Entertainment, as well as Stan (A Different Man) and Emmy winner Emily Gerson Saines.

Stan landed his first Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for his turn as Tommy Lee in Hulu’s acclaimed miniseries Pam & Tommy, also recently starring in Apple’s thriller Sharper opposite Julianne Moore, and in Mimi Cave’s horror-thriller Fresh with Daisy Edgar-Jones. Image
Mark your calendars for next year’s return to the Grishaverse. Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” Season 2, the television series adapted from multiple novels by author Leigh Bardugo, has set a March 16, 2023 premiere date. And below, you can see the first images from the show’s second season.

From co-showrunners, executive producers and writers Eric Heisserer (“Arrival”) and Daegan Fryklind, the second installment of the young adult fantasy series will unfold in eight hourlong episodes. Author Leigh Bardugo also serves as an executive producer.

“The most wonderful thing about Season 2 is that we get to advance the story of these characters that we’d left in precarious positions at the end of Season 1,” Heisserer said in a statement. “There’s a lot of potential for them this season. They have to face the consequences for their actions, and then they get to meet new people along the way. The Grishaverse also expands in this season,...

‘The School for Good and Evil’ Author Soman Chainani Credits Taylor Swift for Inspiring His Gender-Flipped Fantasy
Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Sophia Anne Caruso, and Sofia Wylie in The School for Good and Evil (2022)
“The School for Good and Evil” author Soman Chainani took inspiration for his narration point of view from the one and only Taylor Swift.

“I, growing up was super over-emotional, especially when it came to romance and boys and all those things,” he told TheWrap in an interview. “I always used to say, ‘Look, if Taylor Swift can make so much money writing music about the boys she hates, why can’t I?’ That sort of stuck with me. I just think whatever she’s doing, ‘Pay attention.’””

Netflix’s film adaptation of “The School for Good and Evil” took almost ten years to get made. Chainani published the first book in 2013, turning the first page in the fairytale of Sophie (portrayed by Sophia Anne Caruso in the film) and Agatha (Sophia Wylie), two best friends who find themselves in what they think are the wrong spots in the not-just-legendary school.

Willow (2022)
Disney’s ‘Willow’ Sequel Was Born on the Set of ‘Solo,’ Then Evolved Into Something More
Willow (2022)
Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s “Willow,” like Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Power of the Ring” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” is a big-budget fantasy adventure steeped in a preexisting property. There’s magic and creatures and a mythic quest embarked upon by a group of unlikely heroes. But unlike these other projects, “Willow” isn’t crushed by the weight of expectations.

“There was nobody at Lucasfilm slamming their fist on a table and saying, ‘We need a ‘Willow’ series!’” Jonathan Kasdan, the creator of the new show, told TheWrap during a recent visit to the show’s editing bay. This creative freedom allowed the team to discover what “Willow” could be, free from external (or internal) pressures.

George Lucas conceived of “Willow” (originally with the unfortunate title “Munchkins”) before he began production on “Star Wars,” with the idea that he would create a...

Nielsen Streaming Top 10: ‘House of the Dragon’ Crosses 1 Billion Minutes Viewed in Finale Week
Image
HBO’s “House of the Dragon” closed its debut season on a high note. During the Oct. 17-23 viewing window, the last day of which saw the “Game of Thrones” prequel air its season finale, placed third on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 chart and scored just over 1 billion minutes viewed on HBO Max.

Because “House of the Dragon” airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. and drops simultaneously on HBO Max, the finale’s first few hours of availability were included in this week’s figures. That means when Nielsen releases its findings for the week of Oct. 24-30, the chart will reflect how the show fared throughout the seven days after which Episode 10 was released.

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power” proved to be a little lacking in staying power, with the “Lord of the Rings” prequel series dropping off the overall chart one week after airing...

How ‘The School for Good and Evil’ Author Soman Chainani Ensured Adaptation’s Focus on Empathy
Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Sophia Anne Caruso, and Sofia Wylie in The School for Good and Evil (2022)
“The School for Good and Evil” author Soman Chainani had the chance to step into the world (and castle) he constructed in a creative cameo appearance similar to that of Jenny Han in the adaptations of two of her beloved trilogies “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”

“The cool thing about Netflix, especially with a big fandom, they encourage author cameos. Jenny Han’s a really good friend, but she’d done it and Leigh Bardugo had done it in ‘Shadow and Bone.’ Paul [Feig] was gracious enough to ask me to do it, and that was really my first day on set,” Chainani told TheWrap of his appearance in the Netflix adaptation of his book series.

“Enola Holmes 2,” starring “Stranger Things” breakout Millie Bobby Brown, has successfully cracked the code to climb to the top of Netflix’s weekly ratings for Oct. 31 through Nov. 6. And it had just three days to do so, while many of its competitors had the full seven.

The sequel to the 2020 mystery film counted 65.08 million hours viewed in its debut week on Netflix, rising to the top 10 in 93 countries.

Brown reprises the titular role of Enola Holmes, younger sister to the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). Hot on a new case, Enola’s mystery eventually intertwines with a case Sherlock is working on, so the siblings team up to pull at all the loose threads together, watching their case unravel before them.

And it appears that in the lead-up to watching the sequel, many viewers refreshed their memory by watching the original film, as it received 9.64 million viewing hours on its own.

1 Change Would Have Fixed The School For Good & Evil's Biggest Problems
Image
Warning: Contains potential Spoilers for The School for Good and EvilNetflix's The School for Good and Evil is a movie adaptation of book series by Soman Chainani, yet one change could have mitigated many of its biggest problems. With its star-studded cast, The School for Good and Evil earned mixed reviews from critics and many of the book's readers were left upset by the movie's approach. Netflix had the tall task of adapting an over 540-page book into a 2-and-a-half-hour film, and the muddled final product made it clear that making it a television series rather than a movie instead would have fixed The School For Good and Evil's biggest problems.

The School for Good and Evil tells the story of two best friends, Sophie and Agatha, who end up at the famous School for Good and Evil after the fairy tale-obsessed Sophie made a wish to attend. Much to their confusion and chagrin,...

The School For Good And Evil Book Changes Threaten The Sequel's Storyline
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for The School For Good and Evil book series by Soman Chainani and Netflix's The School For Good and EvilNetflix's The School For Good and Evil features a book change that threatens to affect the plot line of its sequels due to its untimely revelation of the School Master's identity. Based on Soman Chainani's middle-grade fantasy hexalogy, The School for Good and Evil follows the fairytale of best friends, the good Agatha (Sofia Wylie) and the evil Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso), in a magical school where heroes and villains originate. With the movie gaining momentum on the streaming service, Netflix is likely already drawing plans to adapt the other books into movies and director Paul Feig has all but confirmed it in an interview (via Screen Rant). These plans, however, could alter from the source material thanks to a major Master narrative change.

The School for Good and Evil Ending Explained: How It Sets Up Part 2
Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Sophia Anne Caruso, and Sofia Wylie in The School for Good and Evil (2022)
The School for Good and Evil, Paul Feig’s fantasy adventure film based on Soman Chainani’s YA book series, explores the gray areas in fairy tale morality through a pair of girls who are whisked away to the titular Schools for Good and Evil (Sge for short). Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso), who has always considered herself something of an unappreciated Cinderella within the town of Gavaldon, longs to be the kind of princess she’s only read about in fairy tales. Agatha (Sofia Wylie), regarded as the town witch, only wants Sophie to be happy.

When Sophie writes to the Sge begging for enrollment, she and Agatha are transported there… but then Sophie gets dropped into the School for Evil, while Agatha wakes up at the School for Good. With the School Master Rhian (Laurence Fishburne) staunchly claiming that there are no mistakes at his school, each girl must...

Why Sophie Was Sent To The School For Evil, Not Good
Image
Sophie of Gavaldon is convinced that she was sent to the School for Evil by mistake, but as Netflix's The School For Good and Evil movie progresses, it's quite clear that Sophie's "goodness" isn't School for Good material. Adapted from Soman Chainani's book series of the same name, The School for Good and Evil is a play on the fairytale formula where not everything is black and white or purely good and evil. Initially picked up by Universal Pictures for its film rights in 2013, the movie only made significant progress in 2020 when Netflix took over, immediately signing on Ghostbusters' director Paul Feig for the project.

The vain Sophie, played by Sophia Anne Caruso, dreams of leaving Gavaldon for a life of adventure, specifically one that involves princes, tiaras, and an adoration for her beauty. So when she and her best friend, Agatha (Sofia Wylie), are kidnapped to the magical,...

School for Good and Evil readers ‘fuming’ over small change in Netflix film

The School for Good and Evil is on the cusp of being Netflix’s next big hit.

Starring Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington and Sophia Anne Caruso, the fantasy film is directed by Bridesmaids’ Paul Feig and adapted from Soman Chainani’s 2013 novel.

While Chainani previously said the film would be a “very different animal” from the book, it seems readers were not prepared for one big change regarding the hair colour of one of its main characters.

In the book series, Tedros has blonde hair, but in the film, he is played by Jamie Flatters, an actor with dark hair.

“I like him but why isn’t Tedros blonde???? Idk he was kind of a lovable himbo in my head who later turned out to hv more depth and somehow him being blonde is important,” one fan wrote, with another stating: “Y’know at least dye Tedros‘ hair blonde.”

The movie, featuring best friends Sophie and Agatha in their adventures at a school that educates heroes and villains, was based on the novel series of the same name by Soman Chainani. There are many powerful characters in the movie, but a few stand out in particular.

Beatrix

Beatrix was the leader of the traditional princesses at the School For Good and Evil, and was one of the three characters vying for Tedros along with the protagonists, Agatha and Sophie.

While she seemed to adjust well to being given her powers and finger glow, Beatrix never got to do much in battle. Instead, Beatrix ended up being the weaker portions of...

School For Good & Evil 2 Plans Revealed By Netflix Movie Director
Image
The School for Good and Evil 2 is teased by director Paul Feig. Based on the best-selling series of novels by Soman Chainani, The School for Good and Evil was adapted as a movie for Netflix based on a script written by David Magee. Starring an array of top Hollywood talent, including Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Laurence Fishburne, and Peter Serafinowicz, The School for Good and Evil follows friends and social outcasts Agatha (Sofia Wylie) and Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso), as they discover a magical fantasy realm that teaches the next generation of both the good and evil of fairy tales.

The School for Good and Evil ends on a major cliffhanger. Throughout the movie, Agatha (Wylie) and Sophie (Caruso), are in a battle with themselves as they are separated and Agatha is taken to the School for Good (the “Evers”) and Sophie to the Evil (the “Nevers”). However, the pair...

School For Good And Evil: 10 Quotes That Perfectly Sum Up Sophie And Agatha's Friendship
Image
The long-awaited film adaptation of Soman Chainani's The School for Good and Evil series aired on Netflix on October 19, 2022, and it was at the top of the streaming service's movie rankings by the next day. At its heart, the book series and its film adaptation ask where the lines are between good and evil and if friendship can survive being cast on opposite sides of a war.

Agatha and Sophie's relationship isn't as simple as classical fairytale friendships, but that doesn't mean it isn't powerful in its own right. In fact, its complexity is what makes it so enduring, as both girls learn what they would give up for each other. In a world of black and white, good and evil, Agatha and Sophie's relationship can only be understood in their own words.

"You Already Did Do Something That Matters." Agatha

While this line might just seem like a...

The School For Good & Evil Review: A Delightful & Heartfelt Twist On Fairy Tales
Image
The world of fairy tales can be wondrous, and there are plenty of filmmakers who have taken the opportunity to remix past stories, working from a familiar template while adding something new and refreshing. Based on the 2013 novel by author Soman Chainani, The School for Good and Evil, directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay he wrote with David Magee, is a mashup of various fairy tales interpreted differently. Although the Netflix film doesn’t reinvent the wheel and goes on for too long, The School for Good and Evil is a lot of fun and has plenty of heart thanks to its leading performances and solid character development.

Agatha (Sofia Wylie) and Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) are best friends who live in Gavaldon, a town where no one really likes or respects them. Consistently made fun of on their daily walks, Agatha and Sophie rely on each other and...

To celebrate the release of The School of Good and Evil, which arrives on Netflix this week, we sat down with its new young stars, director, and best-selling author to find out more.

In the village of Gavaldon, two misfits and best friends, Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) share the unlikeliest of bonds. Sophie, a golden-haired seamstress, dreams of escaping her dreary life to become a princess, while Agatha, with her grim aesthetic and offbeat mother, has the makings of a real witch. One night under a blood-red moon, a powerful force sweeps them away to the School for Good and Evil — where the true stories behind every great fairy tale begin. Yet something is amiss from the start: Sophie is dropped into the School for Evil, run by the glamourous and acid-tongued Lady Lesso (Charlize Theron), and Agatha in the School for Good, overseen by the...

The School For Good And Evil Ending Explained (In Detail)

With such lofty themes as “good” and “evil,” it was inevitable that The School For Good And Evil would have an eventful ending. Based on the novel of the same name by Soman Chainani, the Netflix movie follows two childhood friends, Agatha and Sophie, who attend the titular school. Despite Agatha being called a witch in their hometown and Sophie’s princess-like qualities, the two are sorted into the schools of Good and Evil, respectively. Believing that they are both in the wrong schools, Agatha and Sophie attempt to prove their true natures to get sorted into the correct schools, but instead they end up uncovering the truth behind their school.

Although Agatha and Sophie initially believed they were in the wrong schools, they eventually discover that they were where they were supposed to be. They not only grow as a result of the Netflix movie’s events, but challenge...

Autumn typically signals the start of the back-to-school season, but in Paul Feig's latest film, this return contains more magic, monsters, and mystery than pens, pencils, and homework. With Netflix's "The School for Good and Evil," the filmmaker behind "Freaks and Geeks" and "Bridesmaids" tackles his biggest fantasy comedy since 2016's much-discussed "Ghostbusters" reboot as he adapts Soman Chainani's popular young adult novel series for the small screen.

In this colorful, sweeping epic, Feig transports us to a familiar world with a magical twist: The would-be heroes and villains of tomorrow are trained at a legendary school. Split into good and evil wings, this is where everyone who's anyone in this fictional land wants to be, especially pals Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wyle). So, you can imagine their glee when they receive an invitation to study with the fairy-tale realm's finest tutors. However, the...

The School For Good And Evil: 10 Best Quotes From The Movie Adaptation
Image
The following article contains major spoilers for The School for Good and Evil.Netflix's long-awaited The School for Good and Evil has proven itself to be worth the hype, doing justice to Soman Chainani's beloved fantasy tale about two best friends who defy expectations when they get sorted into the "wrong" school divisions. There are many factors that help the film succeed, from its discussions of morality to Sophie and Agatha's character development arcs as they grow from their stereotyped images.

However, one of the most important elements of the film is its dialogue, backed by Chainani's acclaimed novel. From lines about good vs. evil to hilarious one-liners, there is an abundance of quotes that make the film memorable.

"A World Out Of Balance." Lady Lesso

The central focus of The School for Good and Evil is how fickle the idea of morality is and how each individual...

School for Good and Evil: Netflix users ‘fuming’ as film makes small change from books
Image

The School for Good and Evil: Netflix's Fairy Tale Epic Lays the Groundwork for Fan-Demanded Sequel — Grade It!
Image
If all goes according to plan, Netflix’s latest YA adaptation could continue happily ever after for years to come.

Based on the first book in Soman Chainani’s six-part series, The School For Good and Evil follows two best friends — Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) — who are whisked away to the titular institution where fairy tale heroes and villains are made. The catch? Whereas Agatha lands comfortably in the School for Good, Sophie is “mistakenly” dropped into the School for Evil.

Sofia Wylie and Sophia Anne Caruso Want a "School For Good and Evil" Sequel as Much as You Do
Image
Netflix's latest fantastical movie, "The School For Good and Evil," left us wanting more. The film follows two outcasts, Agatha (Sofia Wylie) and Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso), as they discover two mythical schools for heroes and villains. Sophie desperately wants to go to the School For Good, but when she inadvertently ends up enrolled in the School For Evil and Agatha ends up in the School For Good, it's up to Agatha to stop Sophia from being roped into an age-old plot to wipe out all Good once and for all.

Even if the cast - which boasts up-and-comers Wylie and Caruso alongside industry heavyweights like Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, and Laurence Fishburne - didn't have unbelievably compelling chemistry (which they do), the open-ended conclusion to the film alone would have had us thirsting for a sequel.

So will there be a "School For Good and Evil" sequel? The...

The School For Good And Evil Cast & Character Guide
Image
Warning! This article may contain minor Spoilers for the movie! The School for Good and Evil opens its doors for session and introduces its cast and characters inhabiting a reimagined fairytale world. Based on the fantasy hexalogy book series by Soman Chainani, Netflix’s the School for Good and Evil follows best friends, Sophie and Agatha, who are abducted to attend a prestigious, magical boarding school where children are trained to become princes, princesses, and witches in their own storybooks. However, Sophie is sent to the School of Evil and Agatha to the School of Good, a mistake they believe should be the other way around.

Originally, Universal Pictures picked up the live-action rights for a book-to-screen adaptation of the School of Good and Evil in 2013. However, production of the project only made headway in 2020 when Netflix announced its takeover, immediately bringing on board A Simple Favor director Paul Feig.

‘The School for Good and Evil’ Review: Netflix’s Star-Studded ‘Harry Potter’ Ripoff Flunks Most of Its Courses
Image
Fairy tales are typically simple and evocative pieces of folklore that tend to communicate lucid moral lessons through the power of story. Paul Feig’s star-studded “The School for Good and Evil” — which is pretty much just “Harry Potter” recast with princesses, fairies, and a random assortment of literary characters from the public domain — might be the most aggressively convoluted YA movie I’ve ever seen. In the world of “Miss Peregrine” and “Mortal Instruments,” this thing is practically “The Big Sleep.”

Where that noir classic teased timeless electricity from confusion as Bogie and Bacall smoldered across mid-century Los Angeles in luminous black-and-white, as a pair of teenage besties wince their way through an epic YA novel’s worth of flat lighting, arcane plot twists, and cheesy set pieces soundtracked to the likes of Olivia Rodrigo (it’s “Brutal” indeed). Fans of Soman Chainani’s popular fantasy series might feel...

Hot Spots: Paul Feig Talks Shooting ‘The School For Good And Evil’ In Northern Ireland
Image
When Netflix was looking to shoot its Paul Feig-directed fantasy-adventure The School for Good and Evil, at its Shepperton Studios hub just outside of London in 2020, there was no space to house the ambitious young adult project in the Surrey-based facility. In a first, the busy streamer decided to cross the Irish Sea and film the Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington starrer in Northern Ireland.

The project, which is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Soman Chainani and launches today on the streamer, sees best friends Sophie and Agatha find their bond put to the test when they are whisked away to a magical school for future fairy-tale heroes and villains. Sophia Anne Caruso, Sofia Wylie, Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Yeoh also star.

“I really wanted to shoot in Belfast because I know people who shot there, friends of mine from Game of Thrones and friends who are from there too,...

The School For Good And Evil Review: Paul Feig Works His Magic For A Frothy But Flawed Family Film
Image
Family movies tend to get a bad rap — they're either too silly or too juvenile or too shallow for general audiences, or so adults like to proclaim. But there's a lot more joy to be had in a family film apart from its ability to not annoy parents after their kids' fourth or fifth rewatch. Family movies can challenge their audiences as much as they can keep them entertained while mom is making dinner. Or, at the very least, they can keep them entertained. Paul Feig's charmingly silly fantasy film "The School for Good and Evil" falls in the latter camp.

That's not to say "The School for Good and Evil" is without merits. Quite the contrary — it's a frothy and fun time, helmed by a director who knows — and has respect for — the material. There's a difference between a director who reluctantly makes a family film out of...
