Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com features an audio review of the newly released “The Twentieth Century,” the debut of Canadian filmmaker Matthew Rankin. The film is a surreal retelling of Canadian history, specifically regarding former Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Dan Beirne is the real-life Canadian Pm, recognized as one of the greatest prime ministers in Canadian history, having served 27 years non-consecutively in the role during the first half of the 20th Century – the most time in that office ever – including guiding Canada through the World War II years. In the film, he is shown at the beginning of his career in 1899, vying for first time political office against his rival Arthur Meighen (an icy Brent Skagford).

"A colorized acid trip through historic hell." Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled the US trailer for Twentieth Century, a very strange and absurdly weird biopic of sorts. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and also played at the Berlin, Cartagena, Bucheon, and L'Étrange Film Festivals this year. Renowned for his mesmerizing, gonzo biographical short films Mynarski Death Plummet and The Tesla World Light, filmmaker Matthew Rankin doubles down on his signature blend of historical and aesthetic abstraction with his debut feature, a bizarre biopic that re-imagines the formative years of the former Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King as a series of abject humiliations. This uber wacky, expressionism adventure stars Dan Beirne as Mackenzie, plus Sarianne Cormier, Catherine St-Laurent, Mikhaïl Ahooja, Brent Skagford, Seán Cullen, and Louis Negin. It's almost impossible to describe this film - some will hate it, some will go nuts for it. But at least it exists,...

With his perverse (and some might say perverted) look at the early life of Canada’s longest-serving Prime Minister W. L. Mackenzie King, Winnipeg-born, Montreal-based multi-hyphenate Matthew Rankin proves himself far more than simply the artistic heir to fellow Canuck Guy Maddin. His low-budget, high-concept recounting of political life in the Dominion of Canada circa the turn of the 20th century is both satiric and scurrilous; the more familiar one is with Canadian history, the funnier it is. But even without prior knowledge of our neighbor to the north, it can be enjoyed for its combination of supreme creativity, jaw-dropping audacity and amusing tongue-in-cheek dialogue. Following its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, it was named best Canadian first feature and acquired by U.S. distributor Oscilloscope, which will release it in May.

"Everytime I see you, it feels good, and it hurts at the same time." Entertainment One has debuted the first official trailer for a very bizarre, high concept indie romantic drama titled Eye on Juliet. Here's the crazy unique pitch for this: a drone operator falls in love with a Middle Eastern woman who is being beaten by her family. She can't really see him, because he operates a hexapod drone, but he can see her on his computer system back in America, and tries to save her. Joe Cole stars as the operator, along with Lina El Arabi as his love interest, plus a cast including Faycal Zeglat, Hatim Seddiki, and Brent Skagford. As weird as this sounds, and although it seems cheesy, this trailer actually shows some promise. He might've pulled this off? This already played at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, which means there's definitely something to it.

The Mark Gordon Company and Vendome Pictures are teaming up once again for Source Code 2, a follow-up to director Duncan Jones' 2011 sci-fi thriller Source Code. It isn't clear if Duncan Jones or star Jake Gyllenhaal will be involved, but, at this point, the project doesn't have a distributor or any cast members attached. Anna Foerster has signed on to direct, from a script by original Source Code writer Ben Ripley.
No story details have been released at this point. Jake Gyllenhaal starred in Source Code as Colter Stevens, a soldier who wakes up in someone else's body. He realizes he's part of an experiment where he only has 8 minutes to find and dismantle a bomb on a commuter train. Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright and Russell Peters co-starred in the thriller, which earned $54 million at the domestic box office and $147 million worldwide, from an estimated $30 million production budget.

Source Code was released April 1st, 2011 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright, Michael Arden, Cas Anvar, Russell Peters, Brent Skagford. The film is directed by Duncan Jones.

Summit Home Entertainment announced today that its Sci-fi film Source Code will be available to consumers via VOD and Est on Friday, July 8, 2011, approximately two weeks prior to the film's home entertainment release date of Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Traditionally standard VOD and Est are available day and date with physical discs. This particular case will test the demand for viewing a bigger budgeted film digitally prior to the release of physical discs. Summit is not shortening the industry established window between a film's theatrical release and its home entertainment debut, rather this test aligns with the studio's ongoing efforts to find the best way to present its films digitally.
The studio has been a leader in home entertainment since offering all of its titles on VOD and through Est day and date with a disc's release since the company was founded in 2007. Summit's Twilight was the first film to gross $100 million...

It was another winning weekend for the movie industry with box office receipts up an estimated 34% from this time last year making everyone hope the 2011 slump is over. Rain in much of the country no doubt helped encourage moviegoers to buy a ticket and stay indoors.
You can't keep a good bird down evidently. Rio was the champ for the second weekend running. It's $26.5 million haul was enough to beat out Madea's Big Happy Family that opened to a robust $26 million. However, Tyler Perry's sixth cross-dressing film performed under expectations. Many had been projecting a $30 million opening weekend but it wasn't able to pull that off. The last two movies featuring his popular Madea character had opened at $41 million and $30 million. Are audiences getting tired of Madea?...

The headline news for box office watchers this weekend is that it's the first to end the slump. Ticket totals had been averaging below the previous year's take most every weekend this year so far. The estimated $139 million haul is well above the same weekend last year which topped out at $119 million.
Rio was the unsurprising big winner at the Us box office this weekend with a $40 million take, right on track with the estimates going into Friday. The tropical bird film earned another $53 million overseas. Add that to its initial $80 million already earned (it had been released in some international markets prior to its Us debut) and the birds have managed to rack up an impressive $168 million so far. Not bad!
Meanwhile, Scream 4 was projected to do around $27 million but...

Will there ever be a weekend during which a completely non-animated movie takes the top spot at the box office? I don't know. But it doesn't look like it's going to be this weekend. The tropical bird-tastic Rio will be swooping into cineplexes, and will likely fly off with about $35-40 million. I think based on how marvelously Hop has managed to do over the past two weeks that folks are still hungry for their animated fantasias. Rio seems like it's much better than the bunny movie, so I think it will play really strong. Maybe even more than the $40 million. This comes from the creative team behind the Ice Age movies, so a built in fan base should be ready to turn out as well. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs grossed an astounding $886 million.

As expected, Hop continued to dominate the box office over the weekend with an estimated $21.6 million take. It should continue to do well over the next few weeks as the holiday approaches.
Meanwhile, Arthur, Russell Brand's other effort, opened to a disappointing $12.6 million - well under the projected $18 million from the studio. This may lead to the end of Hollywood's love affair with Brand as he just doesn't seem to be leading man material as he can't open a movie. His Get Me to the Greek opened to $17.5 million and it was rated R - Arthur's PG-13 should have helped the film reach a broader audience but for once taste prevailed and moviegoers decided to pass. Warner Bros. found themselves in a spot of trouble today, as they were required to pull all trailers for The Hangover Part II out of theaters. This new footage from Todd Phillips's upcoming R rated comedy sequel was attached to prints of the PG-13 rated Source Code, which debuted this past weekend.
There wasn't anything wrong with the footage, per se. The problem came with the fact that the MPAA had not okayed the trailer to run with this particular film. Warner Bros. issued a statement, which you can read below.
"In our haste to meet the placement schedule for this trailer, we failed to properly vet the final version with the MPAA. We acted immediately to correct the mistake and removed the trailer from screens."

It also had the biggest opening weekend of any movie this year. Easter comes early!

The Easter bunny movie you never asked for, Hop, bounces into theaters this weekend just in time for spring. The mixed live-action/animated pairing of Hugh Laurie and James Marsden should get enough parents and their kids to turn out for a weekend win - maybe. The film hasn't been tracking especially well and, along with its generally terrible reviews, is only expected to gross about $22 million (maybe it goes big and does $25M?). The good news for rabbit fans is that the film cost a meager $63 million, so it should recoup its cost relatively easily.

There's nothing particularly interesting about the building blocks of The Bitter End. It's an online sitcom that follows the lives of a few urban twentysomethings as they deal with the identity crises, professional stagnation, awkward cohabitation, and sexual frustration endemic to life as an urban twentysomething. But The Bitter End is a perfect example of execution trumping concept. It's a really funny show. The series begins as Bernard (Daniel Beirne), a nebbishy aspiring novelist, welcomes his fresh-from-rehab older brother, Les (Brent Skagford) into his apartment for what we sense will be an extended stay. Bernard takes a liking to Eden (Vanessa Matsui), a coffee shop employee and working actress whose greatest achievement is a tampon ad in which she proclaims "Because it's my life!" Bernard wants to be part of that life and it becomes clear in the first episode that his brother is going to make a habit of unintentionally hindering that quest.
