Sitcoms Critics Panned That Audiences Love
Image
Audiences often turn to critics for guidance on what to watch. However, sometimes critical reviews overlook elements that make certain sitcoms fan favorites. Series that bring in bad reviews can still have a loyal following. Although aspects like the quality of acting, directing, and writing are essential for fans, there are other factors involved when choosing a beloved show.

By nature, sitcoms are intended to be lighthearted, affording the audience a chance to unwind and relax. Comedy shows gain popularity based on their ability to be relatable and make their fans laugh. While critics are objectively trying to deconstruct sitcoms into their key components for evaluation, enthusiasts of the genre look at the same elements from a different perspective. Often, this means certain sitcoms are hated by critics but loved by audiences.

Updated on September 6th, 2023, by Ajay Aravind: Sitcoms are a particularly common genre for fans and critics to differ over.

‘Cold Feet’ Review
Image
Stars: Gabe Arredondo, Adam Burns, Allen C. Gardner, Matthew Gilliam, Matt Mercer, Nathan Ross Murphy, Drew Paslay, Matthew Stiller, Kenneth Farmer, Lindsey Roberts, Najarra Townsend | Written by Allen C. Gardner | Directed by Brad Ellis, Allen C. Gardner

Bachelor Parties or the ‘Stag Do’ as people in the U.K. will know it, aren’t the most common of places for a horror movie to take place. But here we are with Cold Feet. A group of friends rent a house for a night and in the morning find a stripper dead, a ghost inside the house, and snipers waiting for them outside. Not a good place to be.

Cold Feet takes place entirely in that one location and it’s a good example of how to make something good out of exactly that. It’s not creative in using its one space but it uses plenty of dialogue and keeps things generally comedic.

Man With A Plan Season 1 Review
One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

Why, God, why did Matt LeBlanc say yes to this?

For whatever reason, CBS is using its fall 2016 season to hammer in three overly familiar sitcom staples (the aging white man) all featuring sitcom stars who obviously reached their prime some time ago.

Kevin Can Wait has Kevin James on camera complaining about how he doesn’t fit into this modern world anymore, The Great Indoors does the same with Joel McHale albeit sans-Dan Harmon, and Man with a Plan is probably the weakest of the bunch, if only because it seems to have no idea what its own hook is beyond a premise that could easily fit within the constraints of one episode, not an entire series.

LeBlanc as a leading man has clearly been a tough sell since his time with Friends ended over a decade ago, and it definitely...

Man With a Plan Review: Plan to Avoid Matt LeBlanc's Dreadful New Sitcom
Matt LeBlanc in Man with a Plan (2016)
Oh, Matt LeBlanc. We were Friends once, right? Millions of us watched you as the endearingly dim-witted Joey Tribbiani on that ’90s NBC hit. But now, more than a decade after Friends ended, you’re asking us to watch you in Man With a Plan, CBS’ dated, laughless new sitcom. In the words of Joey himself: “Why, God, why?”

Man With a Plan (premiering Monday, Oct. 24 at 8:30/7:30c) is depressingly formulaic from its first frames. LeBlanc plays contractor Adam Burns — though, really, we could just call him “Joey” to save time — whose wife Andi (Liza Snyder) is going back to work,...
