Asking the Hard Questions About Extreme Cinema Like ‘Deadgirl’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Rob Zombie
Asking Questions.

With Spooky Season firmly in the rear view mirror, Trace and I are now mid-way through our month on Toxic Masculinity. And while we probably could have counted Apt Pupil (and maybe even Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2), we officially kicked things off with Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.

Things get considerably darker with our second entry: Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel‘s Deadgirl. The extreme film follows two high school teenage boys – Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) – who discover a zombie girl (Jenny Spain) in an abandoned hospital and make the horrific decision to use her as a sex object rather than alert the authorities.

As Rickie struggles with his guilty conscience, Jt recruits other “friends” like Wheeler (Eric Podnar) to assault the girl. Things get out of hand, however, when a pair of jocks, including Johnny (Andrew Dipalma) – the boyfriend of Rickie’s crush,...

Deadgirl - DVD Review
.This is the best we.re ever gonna have.. Deadgirl is a deceptive film in that it seems like a horror movie, but there are bigger issues lurking beneath the surface. Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) are best friends. Rickie is the shy, sensitive one and Jt is the bad boy. Rickie has a crush on Joann (Candice Acciola), but she.s dating the bullying jock Johnny (Andrew Dipalma). Rickie and Jt are lounging around the school courtyard because there.s a fire drill. They decide that since they.re out anyway that they.re going to skip school and go to horse around in an abandoned mental asylum. It.s not as scary as Rickie thought it would be,...

[DVD Review] Deadgirl: The Unrated Director's Cut
Drawing from a broad range of influences the likes of Boxing Helena, director Atom Egoyan, and the collective works of David Cronenberg, this dirty micro-budgeted little nasty comes front-loaded with a provocative squirm-inducing premise that will no doubt drive strong ancillary business. But randy adolescents open for a thinly veiled skin flick will be largely disappointed. Similarly, those sick to the back teeth of torture porn would do well not to dismiss this as just another bandwagoner, as co-directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel have far more on their minds here than simply mining a gimmick for the purposes of titillation.

Penned by bit-part-actor-turned-screenwriter Trent Haaga, a man with a long and undistinguished career acting in the realm of Dtv horror, Deadgirl sketches out an eerily plausible portrait of horny adolescent maledom taken to its grim but logical conclusion. Skipping out on class for the afternoon, high school misfit Rickie...
