Often in the world of movies, the hardest stories to tell are the ones based on reality. It’s even harder when there’s no access to the main people involved, leaving a tale built on hearsay and embellishments. And when the movie is about “the most famous woman in the world,” there is almost no way to do her justice. So instead, the film Diana does the impossible – it turns the world’s favorite princess into a little more than a spoiled, selfish brat. The problem is, I don’t think that was director Oliver Hirschbiegel’s intention.

The film begins in 1995, two years before Princess Diana’s untimely death. She and Prince Charles are separated, not yet officially divorced, when Diana (Naomi Watts) first lays eyes on Dr. Hasnat Kahn (Naveen Andrews) in a local hospital. Stunned as soon as she sees him, Diana quickly begins to pursue the doctor romantically.

Diana is a film about a royal subject that is not given a royal treatment. From the pen of first-time screenwriter Stephen Jeffreys, it is a flat rendition of a fascinating public figure, settling on a focus of the Princess of Wales’ love affair with heart surgeon Hazmat Khan, which ultimately turns its protagonist into a withering, indecisive, lovesick girl. Naomi Watts, an actor often strong-willed and full of grace, brings to Princess Diana a complexion that the script slights for a more superficial romantic angle.

The biopic only briefly touches on Diana’s desire for privacy away from the prying paparazzi, as well as her humanitarian work in the mid-1990s to ban land mines. The new film Diana is, by turns, vivid, bathetic, moving, torrid and subversive. It is based on the book Her Last Love by Kate Snell, published in 2000, and, even if only half-true, the story is extraordinary. A few weeks before the princess died in August 1997, she had, once again, been disappointed by a man. Hasnat Khan, a heart surgeon, was, apparently, the love of her life. Khan loved her deeply too, but knew the relationship was doomed. He was Pakistani, a dedicated doctor and a private man. She had no private life. It ended in tears and she threw herself into the waiting arms of Dodi Fayed. Then came the crash and she was no more.

In the months before its U.K. release, the much-hyped "Diana" biopic has courted a fair amount of controversy, which isn't surprising considering its subject: the late Princess Diana's two-year relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan, who to this day remains guarded about their love affair.

In an interview with the Daily Mail last month, Khan, who is played by Naveen Andrews in the film, slammed the project as "based on hypotheses and gossip. ... f I watched it I would be sitting there saying, 'That's wrong, that's wrong, that's not right' every second. I couldn't put myself through that. It would be absolutely terrible."

It would seem Oliver Hirschbiegel's Diana aims to be big in the UK and Japan as those are the only two territories the film is getting any kind of marketing as it has, more or less, skipped the fall festival circuit with a single appearance at the Zurich Film Festival planned. I'm not sure of eOne knows this, but if a run at the Oscars is what you're looking for you might want to make sure a film such as this has a big appearance closer to the U.S. Just my suggestion. Turns out it's no easy feat to play one of the most controversial and iconic figures in recent history. But Naomi Watts loves a challenge, which is exactly why she accepted the titular role in "Diana," the upcoming biopic about the late Princess of Wales.

"There was a lot of hesitation on my part before I agreed to do it," the actress tells the Daily Mail. "Obviously I was taking on one of the most famous women of my time and an awful lot of pressure comes with that. ... But then I also knew that the exciting roles, the best roles, come with a risk. In the end I decided that I couldn't not do it."

To prepare for the film, which chronicles Diana's secretive two-year relationship with British-Pakistani heart and lung surgeon Hasnat Khan, Watts "did more research ... than I've ever done before."

With eOne Films Diana getting released in the United Kingdom September 20th, we're finally getting our first look at the movie in the form of a teaser trailer. Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) and starring Naomi Watts as Princess Diana, the story focuses on the final two years of the late princess’ life, specifically centering on her secret affair with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Kahn, played by Naveen Andrews (Lost). The Stephen Jeffreys‘ (The Libertine) script, based on the book Diana: Her Last Love by Kate Snell, also follows Diana’s life as she transitioned her fame toward becoming a global campaigner and humanitarian. As you'll see in the teaser, which interestingly has no dialogue, Diana will definitely showcase Watts acting chops, but I really hope it's more than just a TV movie on the big screen. eOne Films has premiered the teaser trailer for their upcoming Diana biopic which stars Naomi Watts. The film is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and screenwritten by Stephen Jeffreys, based on Kate Snell's book Diana: Her Last Love by, which was in turn drawn from extensive interviews with close friends and confidantes. The result is a window into the tumultuous, change-filled period from 1995-1997, in the wake of Diana’s shattering divorce from Prince Charles, and at the moment when she stood on the cusp of adifferent life, evolving into a global humanitarian, a master of maneuvering fame and becoming her own woman.

We’ve just been sent the press release and the first official image of Naomi Watts playing Princess Diana which seems to have changed its name from Caught in Flight to now simply ‘Diana‘ which seems to make a lot more sense.

Diana is a compelling portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales during the final two years of her life. It charts how finding true personal happiness allowed her to achieve her defining successes, as she evolved into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.Check out the image below and press release below that.
