Stuart Ford’s AGC International has picked up action thriller “The Father,” starring “Mulan” actor and martial artist Donnie Yen.

The sales and distribution arm of AGC Studios has swooped for international rights to the title, which will be launched to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival, running in largely virtual form from Sept. 10-20. CAA Media Finance will handle U.S. distribution rights.

Set in South Boston, Yen — who is best known for the “Ip Man” franchise, “Star Wars: Rogue One” and, most recently, “Mulan” — stars as middle-class Hong Kong immigrant John Chung, who is making the best of his family’s new life in America while working as a modest fish broker in the city’s docklands. When his teenage sons stumble upon four kilos of heroin and are hunted down by a local crime ring and corrupt cops, Chung must stop at nothing to protect them.

The multi-faceted artist RZA returns to the director’s seat for the third time with Cut Throat City, a long-gestating project which appears to have been a labor of love for its creators, albeit an eventually compromised vision of the systemic racism, injustice and corruption revealed in the aftermath of post-Katrina New Orleans.

A decidedly meaningful historical reference point rife with narrative possibilities, both genre and otherwise, was scripted by P.G. Cuschieri in what stands as his first produced screenplay, originally announced back in 2014 as a project championed by the formidable Reginald Hudlin (who no longer shows up amongst the producer credits).…...

After numerous delays, Well Go USA’s Cut Throat City is finally making its debut — and in theaters. Yes, you heard that right. The RZA-directed crime drama will make its way into select theaters starting today as they slowly start to open their doors across the country.

“Well Go is a supporter of the traditional theatrical window and when we initially read the script a couple years ago we truly envisioned Cut Throat City as a wide theatrical release,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President & CEO, Well Go USA. “It is a socially relevant film that we feel needs to be seen on the big screen. We also want to help support the cinemas as best we can in bringing life back to their business.”

She added, “Obviously, safety is an important part of reopening but we do feel that the cinemas are taking every precaution to make us all and the environment feel safe.

“Cut Throat City” marks RZA’s third directed feature film, and he says it’s the project he feels the most confident in as a filmmaker.

“I actually do think I found my voice,” the founding member of rap supergroup Wu-Tang Clan tells Variety. RZA, whose real name is Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, previously helmed 2012’s martial arts-western “The Man With the Iron Fists” and 2017’s romantic drama “Love Beats Rhymes.”

“So, the third feature really for me is what I would call the consolidation piece. I feel concrete in my style of storytelling,” he says.

The action film, set in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, stars Shameik Moore as Blink, a college-educated aspiring comic book artist who, along with several friends, becomes entangled with a local criminal (played by Tip “T.I.” Harris) and is tasked with pulling off a dangerous heist. Eiza González, Ethan Hawke, Kat Graham and Wesley Snipes also star.

From director RZA and writer P.G. Cuschieri, comes the explosive Cut Throat City, the story of four boyhood friends in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward who return after Hurricane Katrina to find their homes decimated, with no jobs, and no help from Fema. Out of options, they reluctantly turn to a local gangster, who offers them one shot at turning their situations around – by pulling off a dangerous heist in the heart of the city. When the job goes bad, the friends find themselves on the run, hunted by two relentless detectives and a neighborhood warlord who thinks they stole the heist money.
