Woman of the Hour, the 2024 Netflix movie directed by and starring Anna Kendrick, follows the chilling true-crime story of a serial killer who appeared on The Dating Game in the late 1970s. The film’s score, composed by Dan Romer (Luca) and Mike Tuccillo (Ramy), sets the tone for this unsettling narrative, while the expertly selected needle-drops enhance its retro atmosphere. Here’s a breakdown of the Woman of the Hour Soundtrack, including every song featured in the movie that offers a mix of soul, funk, and emotional ballads that resonate with the era.

Giancarlo Esposito is often the best thing about whichever project he appears in. That was certainly the case, for this writer, at least, in “The Mandalorian,” his TV series “Parish,” and, now, the Guy Ritchie Netflix show “The Gentlemen.”
This one is a spin-off of the successful 2019 movie of the same name, which starred Matthew McConaughey and a terrific Hugh Grant. The show focuses on Theo James‘ aristocrat, who inherits his family estate only to find that it is the home of a weed empire. What follows is a classic Ritchie affair, with gangsters and crime members in pursuit of the empire. Esposito appears as a suave, menacing American billionaire named Stanley Johnston, who wants to buy the estate from James’ aristocrat. Esposito once again wields his mesmerizing voice to full effect, delivering the best monologues in the show, in which he calls British aristocracy “the original gangsters.” Critics agree,...

Chris Zucchero, owner of Chicago’s beloved Italian sandwich shop Mr. Beef, is on the “L” trying to get a word in on the phone. He just wrapped up a long two days of catering parties for FX’s “The Bear” Season 2, providing hot Italian beef sandwiches with sweet peppers and spicy giardiniera for Hollywood’s finest.
“The Bear” creator Christopher Storer — who Zucchero has been friends with since kindergarten — based “The Bear” on the classic establishment and shot about 90% of the pilot in Mr. Beef. Storer even cast Zucchero in the pilot as the guy in the parking lot who deals meat to Jeremy Allen White’s character Carmy.
Still, Zucchero hasn’t watched a single episode of “The Bear,” and probably won’t ever. It’s not for lack of interest or support — he just can’t afford to lose sight of the restaurant that’s been feeding Chicago for six decades,...

[This story contains spoilers from season two, episode four of The Bear, “Honeydew.”]
In season two of The Bear, Lionel Boyce’s Marcus goes on a journey.
It’s both external and internal, as bottle episode “Honeydew” sees Marcus reluctantly leave his ailing, nonverbal mother and travel beyond the borders of Chicago for the first time to stage in Copenhagen under a chef named Luca (Will Poulter). He’s there to create three dishes for The Bear’s dessert menu. But the experience — like those of his fellow staff at The Beef — delivers on more than just a meal.
Marcus’ intense experiences in and out of the kitchen “ignite” the rest of his season two journey, Boyce tells The Hollywood Reporter, and help him to understand arguably his biggest lesson so far: That “you make with heart, not with skill.” It’s an emotional episode, directed by Ramy Youssef, that underscores The Bear’s return not as the fast-paced, anxiety-inducing...

When Ramy Youssef is writing an episode of his self-titled Hulu show, he absolutely loves walking that fine line between comedy and drama. “It’s probably my favorite thing to do in comedies, to just get near that thing you’re not supposed to. I feel that if someone’s gonna give me their time, I want to be able to cover something that could crack open a conversation at the dinner table that wouldn’t have been opened without some sort of healthy debate,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). He feels that with the most recent season of the program he has really found that perfect tone to strike for the series. “I feel like in the third season we really struck a great balance between our character development and it being something that just really makes me laugh out loud.

As millennials enter their 30s and 40s, here are ten TV shows that perfectly capture the millennial experience. From Broad City to How I Met Your Mother, adulthood for millennials came concurrently with the rise of streaming and spotlighted a new generation of voices. Shows that depicted Generation Y’s struggles were more diverse, fast-paced, and captured lives torn between screens. The best television about millennials showcased more than their love for avocado toast and student loan debt; they tried to authentically depict the transition between youth and adulthood.
Millennials are often stereotyped as an entitled and technology-obsessed generation stuck in an arrested development. But for a generation that endured terrorist threats and economic depression in their youth, millennial entertainment has remained resilient in its optimism. From the rise of social media to the increasing financial pressure in this gig economy, millennials learned to navigate a revolution in communication and identity.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2023 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 95 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 23 contenders from last year. After six years of there being no restrictions on the amount of entrants they could vote for, each member’s selections can now not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which, in this case, will be eight.

Sometimes the best way for a performer to gain screen time is to write their own material — and there are dozens of multihyphenates who have balanced writing and acting duties on their respective series this season. That’s particularly true in comedy, a genre that sees many series led by performers who mine their own lives for onscreen laughs. (See, for example, HBO Max’s Bridget Everett-led Somebody Somewhere, Peacock’s Pete Davidson vehicle Bupkis and Netflix’s Mo, co-created by and starring Mo Amer.)

Searchlight Pictures have released one of the most intriguing and visually stunning trailers of the year in the first full look at the sci-fi take on the Frankenstein principle, Poor Things. Bad Things premieres on Shudder on August 25, 2023.
Bad Things (first look above) tells the story of a group of friends whose trip to a snowy resort for a weekend getaway devolves in a psychological tailspin and ends in a bloody nightmare.
“With ‘Bad Things,’ I wanted to create a world of women and non-binary people who shake off polite conditionings and finally roar,” Thorndike said in a statement. “Where are all the female Travis Bickles and Jack Torrances? ‘Bad Things’ answers that.”
“At the heart of ‘Bad Things’ is a dark celebration of motherhood and all its splendid viscera. Shudder was the perfect partner for this tale of female rage,” Thorndike also said.

Hulu's "Ramy" is a well-written, refreshing comedy that earnestly dives into how faith and spirituality impact the lives of young people living in a hypercritical world. The series is led by Emmy-nominated actor and show creator Ramy Youssef, who plays Ramy, the son of Egyptian-American immigrants, in a story that explores themes like family dynamics and sexism. Throughout the show's three seasons, Ramy attempts to navigate life while being torn between being a devout, practicing Muslim, and following his new-age ideals. Let's just say that it's very complicated.
"Ramy" is a sharp, humorous series that gives genuine importance to its female (May Calamawy is a star) and middle-aged characters, in a way that's rarely seen on television. It allows them to shine, all while depicting Ramy's misadventures as he struggles to choose between two cultures: the one he was raised in and the one he is surrounded by. It...

Who watches TV for the main characters?
The supporting characters are usually far more interesting.
2022 provided no shortage of supporting characters running away with the show.
These are the scene stealers of 2022 whose spinoffs we would watch.
Commander Jett Reno - Star Trek: Discovery
The incomparable Tig Notaro brings her signature snark to the role of Chief Engineer but, in actual fact, is the reincarnation of Tos' Bones. Wait, that's not the right term since they're technically contemporaries. Emotional doppelganger. Yeah, that fits.
Who wouldn't give their port side nacelle to see a Young Sheldon-like prequel for Reno as a spunky and brilliant young engineer aboard the USS Hiawatha? Or as a candy-addicted cadet at Starfleet Academy?
Even a Short Trek where she visits family and her wife's final resting place? Maybe Reno will create a holodeck program where she can celebrate their anniversary. Notaro would kill that emotive opportunity with deadpan delivery.
