Kathy Bates on Tuesday earned her 13th career Emmy Award nomination for acting — but it was nonetheless a noteworthy one.
That is because the Matlock headliner, at age 77, now stands as the oldest person to vie for Lead Actress in a Drama. Angela Lansbury previously held the record as a 70-year-old contender in 1996, for playing Murder, She Wrote‘s Jessica Fletcher.

Here's a case for Matlock to solve: will Kathy Bates make Emmys history this year?
In 2009, then-62-year-old Glenn Close became the oldest Best Drama Actress winner to date. It was her second consecutive trophy for Damages, and when she won the year prior at age 61, she overtook the category's previous oldest champion, Sally Field, who was 60 when she prevailed for Brothers & Sisters in 2007.
Bates turned 77 on June 28, which means, should she prevail at the 2025 Emmys on Sept. 14, she'd beat Close's record by 15 years. But as we all know, age is just a number!
"I am deeply grateful to the Television Academy for this honor," said the former Best Actress Oscar winner for 1980s' Misery. "My heartfelt thanks to CBS ... for believing in us every step of the way on this beautiful journey and for being such delightful people to work with. The latest update on Matlockseason 2 confirms the return of an unexpected character. The breakout hit legal dramedy ended on a note of uncertainty for Kathy Bates' titular Madeline Matlock. Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) has figured out her secret. But heading into Matlock season 2, which premieres later this year on CBS, Matty may have bigger problems to contend with.
Matty's home life is at a bit of a crossroads, whether that relates to her grandson Alfie or her marriage. There are no immediate answers about how either of those questions will be resolved, but the wait for answers just got a bit shorter.
The official Instagram for Matlock on CBS has shared a cast photo to celebrate that season 2 is now in production. The photo features all the core actors, including Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, Leah Lewis, Sam Anderson, Beau Bridges, and Aaron Harris, who plays Alfie, along with Marshall and Bates.

All eyes are on Jacobson Moore's senior lawyers, Matty (Kathy Bates) and Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), as Matlock gears up for Season 2. Still, there are some huge developments on the horizon for junior lawyers, Sarah (Leah Lewis) and Billy (David Del Rio). Following some cliffhanger discoveries at the end of the season, the characters will grapple with the implications of these developments in their lives. For Billy, it's the realization that he's about to become a father, and for Sarah, it's the potential loss of her job. Sarah skipped protocol and took on a client by herself, exposing the firm to significant risk. "You can’t take a case in a giant law firm without going through the proper channels…. it’s a fireable offense, so that’s what’s at stake," series showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told TVLine. Sarah's workplace nemesis, Simone (Andrea Londo), is determined to expose her,...

Matlock's reformed villain Sarah could face a difficult time of things in season 2 of the hit legal drama. Matlock is a gender-flipped reboot of the 1980s legal drama, and has been a success for CBS since it debuted in September 2024. Matlock introduced many interesting and complex characters during the show's first season, including Sarah. Sarah teamed up with Shae to try to expose Madeline, and caused a lot of problems for her, but has since reformed, and could now be on the receiving end of some antagonistic behavior herself.
Per TV Line, Sarah actress Leah Lewis gave her thoughts on how Sarah's story might shape up for Matlock season 2, as well as how Simone could be set to cause problems for her. The character is oblivious to the fact that Simone is looking into how Sarah secretly landed Dino as her first client, and this could have serious repercussions for Sarah,...

The new Matlock has turned out to be a major hit for CBS. Featuring Kathy Bates in the lead role, the series is a quasi-reboot of the original Matlock, and following a successful first season, another is currently in the works.
Per Variety, Bates recently opened up about her role in Matlock. She confirmed that she "didn't watch" the original Matlock beyond just a few episodes to prepare for her role, though she also noted that it wasn't exactly necessary. The series is not set in the same universe as the original show, and it has a unique style of its own that's very different from the classic series. That wasn't always the plan, however, as Bates shared how the original concept for the reboot was to have someone in her 30s playing a relative of Andy Griffith's Matlock.
"Well, let’s say it was a conscious choice [not to watch the original Matlock]," Bates said.

Yes, we were left to wonder what Olympia (played by Skye. P. A trip to the theater to see a "family movie" in 2025 is more reliant than ever on Millennial sensibility, and bubbling Zoomer nostalgia begins to make its presence felt with big hits like "Lilo & Stitch" and "Inside Out 2." The Y2K-era and its immediate aftermath are firmly in the driver's seat as far as pop culture is concerned, even aughts horror staples like "Final Destination" are having a moment, that influence is only going to grow as the years continue to stretch onward. But, in the late '00s, Disney Channel had the chance to make one of their current fan-favorite franchises even bigger, and they surprisingly opted against it. "High School Musical" could have had a spinoff called "Madison High," however, the company chose not to put it into production despite casting and other reports surfacing around the show's development.

Matlock TV star Kathy Bates talks about how the series brought her back from the brink of retirement.
During an appearance at The Hollywood Reporter drama actress roundtable, Bates was asked about her decision to not retire from acting, which she was open about considering during the initial round of Matlock promos. "This is something I can really believe in," Bates responded. "It means something. Up until that point, things were starting to wind down for me."
"I was getting roles that I really cared about in films that no one would see," Bates continued. "[There was] disappointment in the way things were edited. It started to hurt too much. I just thought that maybe I ought to think about putting my house on the market and moving to France or something. I just wanted some real stimulation."

A studied actor celebrating her biggest TV role ever at age 76, Kathy Bates recruited some legendary help to get ready for “Matlock.” In 1992, the year after she won her Academy Award for “Misery,” Bates presented Anthony Hopkins with his Oscar for “Silence of the Lambs.”

‘Matlock’ acting Emmy submissions include Kathy Bates and Skye P. Marshall, plus these 3 guest stars
CBS will submit nine cast members from Matlock Season 1 for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has learned.
Kathy Bates is entering the Best Drama Actress category for playing Madeline Kingston, a wealthy woman who's masquerading as a kind-hearted lawyer named Madeline "Matty" Matlock. Madeline uses her manipulation skills (and an assist from Werther's Originals) to try to uncover which partner at Jacobson Moore covered up evidence that could have prevented the opioid epidemic that led to her daughter's death. Bates, an Oscar winner for Misery (1990), has already won two Emmys in her career, for Two and a Half Men and American Horror Story: Coven, but this would be her first lead Emmy victory.

For Kathy Bates, Matlock was the miracle she’d been waiting for.
“Even though I've had a long career and people know who I am, I was feeling a little bit invisible,” says Bates. “But more than that, I wasn't challenged by the work in the same way. I hate to say I was losing interest in what I love to do, but you really need to find something that you really love to do. And it was a miracle to find something this well-written, this exciting, this unusual, and this deep.”
That miracle came in the form of Matlock — the CBS “prestige-ural” that utterly reimagined the word remake when it debuted last September. As conceived by Jennie Snyder Urman, Matlock skillfully blended the familiar tropes of a legal procedural with a compelling contemporary twist, winning an early second season renewal, topping broadcast charts, and earning plenty of awards buzz,...

CBS's modern take on Matlock was the breakout hit of the season for the network, thanks in part to casting Kathy Bates in a role that's much deeper than just a gender swap of Andy Griffith's classic attorney. Matty Matlock, aka Madeline Kingston, spends Season 1 seeking truth and justice for her daughter, who died as a result of the opioid epidemic. Viewers follow her as she makes friends and seeks clues among those in the law firm Jacobson Moore in hopes of finding who hid the critical evidence against the pharmaceutical company Wellbrexa that could've saved her daughter's life. Between this, however, is a case-of-the-week formula for Matty and the team that hearkens back to the show's predecessor. According to Skye P. Marshall, that element isn't going anywhere either as the show changes focus in Season 2.

Matlock has officially wrapped its freshman season with a bang, securing its place as television’s top new series and the second most-watched broadcast show overall. The legal drama, starring Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates, was a brilliant hit with viewers across both CBS and Paramount+, drawing an impressive 17 million viewers on average across platforms in Live+35 ratings, according to Nielsen.
The irrepressible and still-formidable Kathy Bates, has done more than dominate this television season, though. It's even managed to shock audiences with a significant plot twist introduced in the pilot, which took the show from a simple gender-swapped reboot of the 1980s legal drama, into an immensely intelligent deep dive into the themes of power, justice, and society’s treatment of older women.

Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for Matlock's Season 1 finale.
Season 1 of Matlock is coming to an end as a massive success. CBS's new legal drama starring Oscar-winner Kathy Bates and reimagining the original Andy Griffith-led program from 1986 closed out its inaugural run tonight, on April 17, as not just one of broadcast television's biggest new series, but one of the most-viewed shows across all networks with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, to boot. As Matty finally gets to the bottom of who among the Jacobson Moore hid evidence in a pharmaceutical case that could've saved the formerly retired lawyer's daughter, attention is turning toward the future. It only took two episodes for Jennie Snyder Urman's smash hit to earn a Season 2 renewal, and, according to Skye P. Marshall, the writers are hard at work deciding what's next for the fan-favorite con artist attorney.

We always knew it would be rough once someone figured out Madeline Matlock’s secret, but the reveal was far better than we could have imagined.
First, we have been waiting all season for Olympia to learn about the pen and blow up on Matty. Granted, there was every chance it would be explained away.
Thankfully, the Matlock writers knew at this point in the story that we would want to see the fallout of Matty’s lies to Olympia.
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)
Be careful what you wish for because you could practically see the steam coming out of Olympia’s ears as she confronted Matty on the sidewalk.
That was one hell of a way to kick off the last episode before the Matlock Two-Part Season 1 Finale.

[This story contains spoilers from the April 3 episode of Matlock, “The Johnson Case.”]
Nothing in the pilot that launched the CBS hit show Matlock starring Oscar winner Kathy Bates hinted that the friendship between cunning and wily 76-year-old Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a lawyer with a lot of fight still left in her tank, and the partner-tracked, soon-to-be divorcee mother of young twins Olympia Lawrence would become one of the most compelling elements of the show. But that’s exactly where things are as Matlock prepares to wrap its first season. Now, the audience stake in that relationship hit like a boulder as Olympia confronted Matty at the end of the third to last episode.
“So, who the hell are you, Madeline Matlock?” Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) grilled, as Matty stepped off the bus she regularly takes from cushy Jacobson Moore before meeting her driver and sinking into the back of a limo on her way to her mansion — not a cramped apartment in...

Julian (Jason Ritter) might be one of Matty's (Kathy Bates) suspects, but Ritter is not leaving Matlock if his character is the culprit. The actor has changed his appearance lately as he grew his mustache, which Julian does not have. This led to fan speculation that he wouldn't return for Season 2 of the hit CBS series. Ritter addressed these rumors in an interview with TV Insider at PaleyFest. He said the mustache was for another show he's been cast in recently. If Gold Derby's Emmy odds are correct, then Kathy Bates is on the verge of making history.
The veteran star is currently favored to win Best Drama Actress for the reimagined Matlock. She would be 77 years old when the trophies are handed out Sept. 14, which would make her the oldest woman ever in the category by 15 years.
Glenn Close (Damages) has held the Emmy record since 2009, and before that 2008, when she won back-to-back Best Drama Actress trophies at ages 62 and 61. Prior to Close, the category's oldest winners were 60-year-old Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters in 2007), 58-year-old Barbara Stanwyck (The Big Valley in 1966), 57-year-old Barbara Bel Geddes (Dallas in 1980), 50-year-old Sada Thompson (Family in 1978), and 50-year-old Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder in 2015).
After winning the Critics Choice Award for Matlock, a shocked Bates thanked showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman "for creating such an amazing role for an old lady like me.
