‘The Order’: Read The Screenplay By Zach Baylin About A Sinister ’80s Crime Spree With A Modern Relevance
Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series highlighting the scripts behind the awards season’s buzziest films continues with The Order, Justin Kurzel’s period crime drama based on a chilling and timely true story. The screenplay was written by Oscar-nominated King Richard scribe Zach Baylin.

The film starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan and Jurnee Smollett has been hitting the fall festival circuit beginning with its world premiere at Venice. It has since opened the Zurich and Marrakesh film festivals and hit theaters in limited release this past weekend via Vertical.

Baylin’s script, adapted from the book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, centers on a string of violent robberies and other crimes beginning in the early 1980s Pacific Northwest that the FBI, and specifically veteran agent Terry Husk (Law), figured out were being perpetrated by a white supremacist group plotting to overthrow the government.

‘The Order’ Screenwriter Zach Baylin Says True-Life Domestic Terrorism Tale ‘Would Be Relevant Anytime It Would Have Come Out’
Image
Zach Baylin knows the buzzwords already: “timely,” “prescient,” “controversial.” But the screenwriter behind such true stories as “King Richard” and “Gran Turismo” is also a student of history, so when it comes to his latest film, which follows the unnerving true story of a homegrown white supremacist militant group, he doesn’t get too caught up in the quickie designations. After all, he knows something about following a story beyond just cawing headlines and catchy descriptors.

Baylin’s latest, the Justin Kurzel-directed “The Order,” tracks the final days of neo-Nazi militant Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult), as he gathers together his eponymous terrorist group (a rag-tag assemblage of white supremacists) as they plot bank robberies, car heists, and government overthrow in the Pacific Northwest in the early ’80s. But Matthews’ aims are noticed by FBI agent Terry Husk (based on real-life agent Wayne Manis), and when Husk starts gathering his...

Marrakech Kicks Off With ‘The Order’ As Luca Guadagnino, Patricia Arquette, Jacob Elordi, Andrew Garfield, Monica Bellucci & Tim Burton Hit Red Carpet
Image
Justin Kurzel’s neo-Nazi thriller The Order opened the 21st Marrakech International Film Festival on Friday evening, with the director jetting over from Australia where he recently wrapped WWII drama The Narrow Road to the Deep North with Jacob Elordi.

Kurzel told Deadline that the Moroccan festival had been a special place for him ever since he made the 24-hour trip from Australia in 2011 to compete with first feature, true crime drama Snowtown, which won the jury prize and best actor for Daniel Henshall.

“The French distributor pleaded for me to come. It’s a long away… she said, ‘You better come… the festival will change you.’ I did… and just the city, it’s really quite magical. It was the first time I was with first-time filmmakers, so I was able to establish a bit of a posse, a bit of tribe,” he said.

Kurzel was joined by AGC boss Stuart Ford,...

‘The Order’ Trailer: Jude Law Is an FBI Agent Investigating White Supremacists in True Crime Saga
Image
Jude Law has been on fire in 2024, with “Firebrand” debuting and an announced collaboration with “City on Fire,” “Queer,” and “Challangers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes. Now, Law is laying down the law — literally — as an FBI agent in Justin Kurzel’s “The Order.”

Based on a true story, “The Order” follows Law’s character Terry Husk as he investigates a string of violent robberies in the Pacific Northwest. It turns out all those crimes are part of a domestic terrorist plot to overthrow the federal government. Sound familiar?

Per the official synopsis, “As the militia builds a war chest of over $4 million, Husk pursues the malevolent racist Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult) to a final bloody standoff that will go down in U.S. history.” Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Marc Maron co-star.

The film is written by “King Richard” scribe Zach Baylin, with Law and “Nitram” director Kurzel both...

Jude Law Tracks Down Violent Neo-Nazi Gang in ‘The Order’ Trailer
Image
Jude Law is a tenacious FBI agent hunting down a neo-Nazi terrorist group who has been behind a recent string of bank robberies and car heists in order to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government in The Order.

Based on real events in 1980s Washington State, the trailer for Justin Kurzel’s cat-and-mouse thriller (below) sees Law as agent Terry Husk, who is convinced the robberies are not the work of petty criminals but instead of a domestic terrorist gang looking to spark a race war to overthrow the government.

The trailer points to the white supremacists who are recruiting and training new members, fund-raising, killing opponents and launching terror attacks. Ultimately, Husk’s manhunt leads to Bob Mathews, a zealous racist played by Nicholas Hoult, who fronts a terror group called The Order.

“You’re not from here, huh?” a weary Mathews asks Husk from the cab...
