It's been 20 years since "Avatar: The Last Airbender" revolutionized TV, and now the franchise is expanding. We've had comics and novels for a while now, with fantastic stories that expand the world of "Avatar" and paint a picture of different eras and different reincarnations of the titular master of all four elements. But now we're going back to the screen, both big and small, with a new sequel series as well as a movie, "The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender."

It's been no secret that the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender was being overhauled for the Gaang's new feature-length adventure, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. One role that was conspicuously left empty, though, was that of the fan-favorite Zuko — Aang's rival turned friend and fire-bending teacher who would go on to take his villainous father Ozai's (Mark Hamill) place as the Fire Lord. Although there was initially some speculation that Dante Basco would simply reprise the role, it's been confirmed that the actor taking up the mantle has, technically, been known this whole time. Series creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko confirmed in an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con that Steven Yeun, who was announced to be joining the sequel film in an unknown role back in March, will be voicing the now-adult Zuko when the sequel film arrives in 2026.

20 years since Nickelodeon first aired Avatar: The Last Airbender, the hit animated fantasy franchise has been more active than ever of late. Netflix's live-action adaptation has a second season on the way, and the first new series since Avatar: The Legend of Korra ended in 2014 is on its way with Avatar: Seven Havens coming in 2027 at the earliest. For those looking to see the original Gaang back together again, however, the project to watch for is The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. Due out in late 2026, the film will pick up with Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko as adults, years after Aang rose to the occasion and defeated Fire Lord Ozai. A new era means a chance to explore a new side of these characters not seen extensively in either Avatar series, and Michaela Jill Murphy has some ideas for her blind earthbender.

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender eager to see Aang’s next big-screen adventure will have to wait a little longer. Paramount Pictures has officially delayed the release of The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender from January 30, 2026, to October 9, 2026. While the news is a letdown for longtime fans, the nearly nine-month push signals the studio’s intent to give this animated sequel the polish and attention it deserves.
The film is set years after the events of the beloved 2005 series, promising a fresh yet faithful continuation of Aang’s journey, according to Variety. With an all-star voice cast that includes Dave Bautista, Steven Yeun, and Eric Nam, and co-direction by Lauren Montgomery and William Mata, expectations are sky-high. One upcoming series set in the Avatar: The Last Airbender world just got a definitively disappointing update. Several new Atla projects are coming down the pipe in the next few years, but one of the most intriguing is Avatar: Seven Havens. The new series will be set after the events of Legend of Korra, and will follow an unnamed earthbending Avatar who is viewed as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. There had been no word on an official release date for the series, but the most recent issue of Toy World Magazine features a Paramount section, which confirms that the show will not debut until 2027 at the earliest. Seven Havens will be created by original Atla scribes Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, and casting information has yet to be revealed.

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will finally usher the Avatar-verse into cinema, helmed by the original creators, and be the first animated film of the franchise ever made. One of the huge advantages the film has, apart from its legacy, is the fact that it is being helmed by one of the veterans of DC’s animated scene, who has also produced some of Marvel’s most beloved animated features.
Lauren Montgomery has been a part of a slew of animated films and shows that have wowed fans since 2006. “Avatar”– the master of the four elements and not the blue alien creatures created by James Cameron — graced the main stage at CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners that’s currently unfolding in Las Vegas.
Well, sorta. Paramount didn’t preview any footage of the film, based on the popular “Avatar: The Last Airbender” television series, though the studio did unveiled the official title: “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.”

Back in the 2010s, superhero movies adopted the "cinematic universe" as their storytelling framework; like the comics, separate franchises with unique lead characters existed within a common setting and would cross over. In the 2020s, cape-flicks leveled up to the multiverse, where each past version of a screen superhero also exists and can interact with the current ones. It's all really an excuse for easy nostalgia plays and inside jokes, hence Michael Keaton showing up as Batman again in "The Flash." (Not that it helped the movie succeed.) Last year's "Deadpool & Wolverine" was similarly all about Disney buying out 20th Century Fox and discarding the latter studio's Marvel franchises.
For my money, only one superhero movie has used the multiverse in a way befitting true science-fiction rather than just picking and choosing favored action figures for a single play-set.

The question comes up whenever we publish this list: Why only studio movies? Isn’t this IndieWire?
But here’s the thinking: For most moviegoers and for many filmmakers, helming a studio-backed film is the pinnacle of a career, or at least the pinnacle of visibility. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director. It’s not the end-all, be-all. It may not even be a goal for many filmmakers.
By looking at this portion of the release calendar (and all the box office bucks that come with it), we can get a sense of who Hollywood is letting into its most rarefied spaces. And that matters.
As we’ve too often discovered in the making of this list, that landscape isn’t really changing. While the most recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study does not quite show a decline in inclusion,...

While it is safe to say that the film industry has survived to 2025, one of the greatest casualties of the Hollywood strikes of 2023 has been the entertainment industry’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The continued push into Hollywood consolidation inevitably leads to debt, which leads to developmental programs and jobs being cut. Warner Bros. Discovery and the Paramount/Skybound merger are only the most recent examples of this.
But one could argue there is also a growing sentiment that media CEOs are simply no longer interested or invested in putting more effort into diversity. Consider it a backlash to the backlashes of 2016 and 2020, the very ones that focused on pushing Hollywood to empower more filmmakers who are women and/or people of color. While the most recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study does not quite show a decline in inclusion, it does reveal that the progress in finding, elevating,...

The cornerstone of one of television’s longest-running TV shows and most beloved crime drama, Harmon is best known for his effortless on-screen charm and nuanced portrayals.

The biggest year in animation, especially in regards to movies, is coming very soon. 2024 has had and continues to have several standout releases and upcoming films in the animation category, including Kung Fu Panda 4, Inside Out 2, and The Wild Robot. While not every release, such as The Garfield Movie, was successful with audiences and critics, this year still showcased some strong new stories and the return of many iconic animated movie characters.
That being said, 2026 is an exciting year for animated movies as several franchises expand their stories with upcoming installments that could add new narrative layers. Several animation studios have announced the continuation of many of their popular titles, keeping a lot of these stories alive for new generations. Others lack specific details about their casts and main storylines, but are still exciting possible additions to the lineup nonetheless. All of these, in short, make 2026 a huge...

Transformers One, is going now on Sept. 20 instead of Sept. 13.
The move gets Transformers One further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which is going to eat up the September box office. However, already on this weekend is DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Wild Robot. Two big animated movies are certainly not going to live on the same weekend.
The release date change also comes in the wake of the great reception that Transformers One received out of CinemaCon last week. Late September has been a rich bed for family animated movies including Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.2M opening), Hotel Transylvania ($42.5M opening) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ($34M opening).
Transformers One is among one of Paramount’s highest tested movies in the studio’s history.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has seen a resurgence in its popularity thanks to its recent live-action Netflix adaptation. The iconic animated series is a beloved piece of media and the story of Aang and his friends has resonated with fans over the years. Therefore, it might surprise some to learn that Nickelodeon canned a continuation film focusing on Aang.

The series aired on Nickelodeon for the entirety of its run and was followed up by the spin-off The Legend of Korra. The series adapted the initial stories of the popular animated series and regardless of the final result, most fans were actually eager to see what Netflix has done with the series, and while there have been some lukewarm comments, the series was an overall success for Netflix, although it remains to be seen what is going to happen to it in the future.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has become somewhat of a hot topic lately. After the wildly successful Nickelodeon TV show took the world by storm, there was a disastrous attempt to create a live-action movie in the past. But more recently, Netflix tried and was in fact successful in bringing Aang and the gang into the live-action world through their latest series.
Now, Paramount, along with Nickelodeon, are taking a stab at it to make a successful movie adaptation of the popular cartoon. The cast was recently announced, and the choice of Eric Nam to voice the adult version of the lead character isn’t sitting right with many people.

What a time for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" fans to be alive. The Aang Gang was first immortalized in Nickelodeon's original animated series, one that practically altered the brain chemistry of countless kids of my generation and introduced us to the sheer potential of storytelling. Netflix most recently took advantage of the nostalgia and goodwill the show still enjoys, translating the tale of Aang's destiny as the Avatar and his war against the Fire Nation into a live-action retelling that quickly justified a second and third season. All that took place as a backdrop to the news first reported two years ago, of course, which indicated that Avatar Studios (headed by the creators of the original show, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dimartino) was going all in on a trio of new animated movies set in the world of "Avatar."

It’s pretty amazing, how the casting director for Avatar: The Last Airbender actually got Jason Isaacs to voice Zhao! This wasn’t just about getting a famous actor; it meant getting the exact person who inspired the character. Isaacs’ performance really captures Zhao’s ruthlessness, making him a serious threat to Aang and his friends.
