10 Years Later, Vin Diesel's Teasing a Sequel to His Forgotten Fantasy Film
Image
Vin Diesel is still ready to revisit the world of The Last Witch Hunter.

Per Instagram, the Hollywood action icon recently teased the long-awaited follow-up to The Last Witch Hunter on social media. Diesel posted an image of himself sporting his iconic look from the film, along with the caption "Kaulder..." in a nod towards his open desire to return to the character.

Directed by Brick Eisner from a screenplay by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless, The Last Witch Hunter starred Diesel as Kaulder, a former knight cursed with eternal life by the Witch Queen over eight hundred years before the story picks up in the modern day. The film follows Kaulder as he carries out missions on behalf of the Axe and Cross, a clandestine order dedicated to keep the peace between humankind and witches around the world. As the story of The Last Witch Hunter unfolds,...

Vin Diesel Teases the Return of 'The Last Witch Hunter'
Image
Now that his tentpole action franchise, Fast and Furious, is approaching the finish line, Vin Diesel is on the hunt for another series he hopes will dominate the box office. With another Riddick adventure already on the way, Diesel has teased what’s next on his agenda, suddenly teasing a long-awaited sequel to a long-forgotten fantasy action failure.

Taking to Instagram, Diesel shared a “throwback” image of himself sporting the glorious long hair and beard of the movie’s main character, and immortal witch hunter, Kaulder. Pairing the image with the simple caption, “Kaulder…,” it’s obvious that the actor is teasing the return of The Last Witch Hunter franchise. A franchise that, while now largely forgotten, carries a lot of potential for further adventures.

Released back in 2015, The Last Witch Hunter takes inspiration from a character that Diesel himself made for his personal Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The fantasy action outing centers on Kaulder,...

Forgotten Vin Diesel Chiller Is Now the #1 Horror Movie on Netflix
Image
A much-maligned Vin Diesel picture is presently finding new life on the Netflix charts. It has an abysmal reputation with both critics and fans but the fact that the flick is charting seems to suggest that there’s a certain merit to it. I’ll level with you, I have a soft spot for this one. The Last Witch Hunter is not necessarily a great movie but it’s an escapist action-horror spectacle that’s never boring.

The Last Witch Hunter landed on the Netflix platform on June 16 and has been making waves since. Today the flick sits in 8th place overall and comes in as the most-watched horror movie on the streamer. This suggests that I may not be the only one with a soft spot for this oft-maligned effort. Sure, it’s not fine art but you could certainly do worse if you tried.

Diesel toplines the picture,...

10 Years Later, Vin Diesel's Underrated Fantasy Film Finds New Success on Streaming
Image
Vin Diesel is generally synonymous with the Fast & Furious franchise, where he plays Dominic "Dom" Toretto. Outside of the high-octane film series, the actor can be seen in other action-packed movies.

One of them was the highly underrated fantasy film The Last Witch Hunter. The film premiered in 2015 and was critically panned, but Lionsgate still decided to bet on a sequel that has yet to materialize. 10 years after its premiere, The Last Witch Hunter is making a splash on streaming, Tudum reveals.

The Last Witch Hunter premiered on Netflix on June 16, and it didn't take long to attract the subscribers' attention. For the week between June 16 and 22, the film debuted in fourth place on the domestic charts. It fell just behind Gerard Butler's Plane, which rose to the top of the charts in the U.S. with 6.6 million globally, the documentary Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy, and Tyler Perry's thriller Straw,...

Vin Diesel’s Fantasy Epic That Helped Him Cope With the Loss of Paul Walker Hits Streaming Charts
Image
Vin Diesel will always be known for his work as Dom Toretto in the Fast & Furious movies, but 10 years ago, he starred in a fantasy epic that’s found new life on streaming. Diesel features alongside Elijah Wood and Michael Caine in The Last Witch Hunter, the 2015 film following a witch hunter who stands between humanity and the deadliest witches in history. The Last Witch Hunter began streaming on Netflix not long ago, and the film wasted no time climbing to the top of streaming charts, sitting at #2 at the time of writing, behind only Gerard Butler’s Plane. The Last Witch Hunter earned poor scores of 18% from critics and 42% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $146 million at the box office against a $90 million budget.

Vin Diesel’s Fast & Furious co-star, Paul Walker, passed away on November 20, 2013, less than a year before The Last Witch Hunter began filming.

Vin Diesel’s Critically Panned Fantasy Epic With Elijah Wood Lands on Streaming as Fans Await a Sequel
Image
When you think of Vin Diesel, chances are theFast & Furious franchise is the first thing that comes to mind. The billion-dollar juggernaut provided the vehicle with which he rode to superstardom, and while it's often hard to separate Diesel from Dom Toretto, fast cars are not all that the actor is about. Fun Trivia? Diesel is a longtime Dungeons & Dragonsfan, and he even starred in a fantasy action epic based on a character he created for the game. That film, The Last Witch Hunter, flew under the radar for many casual fans, largely due to its unfair critical reception. The few who saw it found it entertaining enough, and now, amidst whispers of a sequel, The Last Witch Hunter is set for greater visibility as it's found a new home on Netflix.

The Last Witch Hunter, released in 2015, was written by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharples, who based...

Aperture Entertainment Signs Kyle McConaghy & Joe DeBoer, Filmmakers Behind Toronto-Bound Horror Thriller ‘Dead Mail’
Image
Exclusive: Adam Goldworm’s Aperture Entertainment has signed Kyle McConaghy and Joe DeBoer, a Missouri filmmaking duo whose acclaimed horror thriller Dead Mail will soon have its Canadian premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival.

A mainstay on the genre festival circuit since its premiere this year at SXSW, Dead Mail has won a number of awards, including Best Film and Best Director at UK Fright Fest, and is currently rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Still in search of distribution, the film watches as an ominous help note finds its way to a 1980s post office, connecting a dead letter investigator to a kidnapped keyboard technician.

We’re told the viewing experience is as if you found a vintage Fincher VHS, lost to time, in the back of your ’80s video store. Veteran genre producers Roy Lee and Steven Schneider took to the film so strongly...

The Last Witch Hunter sequel: Vin Diesel is still looking forward to playing Kaulder again
Vin Diesel
If there’s one positive thing even the many people he’s had feuds with might say about Vin Diesel, it’s that when he latches onto a character or concept, he doesn’t let them go. He may have skipped the first sequel to The Fast and the Furious, but once he did return to the role of Dominic Toretto, he made sure the sequels kept reaching theatres at a fast and furious pace. Few movie-goers seem to care about the Richard B. Riddick character beyond Pitch Black, but that hasn’t stopped Diesel from continuing to push sequels forward – and apparently Riddick 4 isn’t far off from production. Then there’s his 2015 fantasy/action film The Last Witch Hunter, which didn’t gain a lot of fans (although JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy dug it). Diesel liked it, so we might just get a The Last Witch Hunter...

Vin Diesel Teases Sequel to The Last Witch Hunter Again
Image
In 2015, Vin Diesel starred in The Last Witch Hunter, and his latest post hints at a possible continuation.

On Thursday, Vin Diesel hopped on Instagram to share a "Throwback Tuesday" to one of the characters he's played along the way. Diesel is notorious for his Fast & Furious role, Dominic "Dom" Toretto, which he has reprised in almost all the franchise's films so far. He didn't return for the first film's sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and only made a short cameo at the end of the third film, Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift. However, the focus of his post was his 2015 film The Last Witch Hunter.

Writers Slam WGA for Staying Silent on Israel Attacks in Open Letter: ‘We Know That Words Matter’
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
A group of screenwriters including Eli Roth, Graham Yost and Amy Chozick have issued an open letter decrying the Writers Guild of America’s silence on last week’s Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.

In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.

“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example,” the statement said. “When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up. But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent. It remains the only major Hollywood union to do so.”

SAG-AFTRA and the DGA were among the Hollywood studios,...

Jonah Hill is stepping behind the camera again with another topic close to his heart. After his 2018 directorial debut Mid90s, which was an autobiographical look at a young boy’s coming of age amongst a group of skaters, Hill will be directing a documentary for Netflix about therapy, using his own therapist as the focus. Dr. Phil Stutz will be at the center of Hill’s documentary, which he says on Instagram will “frame therapy and Phil’s tools for dealing with life in a way that isn’t corny or cheesy.” In an exciting addition, it is reported that the film will also feature an interactive component that will be able to assist people who are unable to obtain therapy to get the tools and information they need Joaquin Phoenix, who co-starred with Hill in the Gus Van Sant film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, will...

‘Crawl’ Filmmaker Alexandre Aja Directing ‘Elijah’ For Searchlight Pictures
Image
Exclusive: We can tell you first that French filmmaker Alexandre Aja is set to direct the horror feature Elijah for Searchlight Pictures as the newly owned Disney label continues a streak with genre fare following last year’s Ready or Not and Scott Cooper and Guillermo del Toro’s Antlers.

The Last Witch Hunter scribe Cory Goodman sold the original pitch to Searchlight before Aja came in to direct, and rewrite with Gregory Levasseur (Mirrors). Pic follows a young boy who invites a mysterious man into his home, believing the stranger to be the key to saving his sick mother. As increasingly disturbing things start to happen around his home, the boy soon realizes that the sinister stranger is not the savior he claims to be.

Paramount Takes Off With Jeremy Lott’s WWII Bomber Spec ‘Blessed Event’; Temple Hill Producing
Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has picked up Blessed Event, a spec script by Jeremy Lott based on a true WWII story. The pic is set at Temple Hill, which inked a multi-year first-look film deal with the studio earlier this year. Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, Issac Klausner, and John Fischer will produce the project with Adam Goldworm serving as executive producer.

Set in the South Pacific during WWII, the film is about the American crew of a B-24 Liberator Bomber who pilots their wounded plane through a gauntlet of enemy fighters and anti-aircraft guns to complete an improbable but critical mission behind enemy lines.

Lott was initially inspired by a local news interview with the bomber’s tail gunner who was finally getting his medals after more than 70 years. This led to his five-year research stint where he tracked down and met with the tail gunner and family members of the rest of the crew,...

Yes, Hollywood Is Still Buying Spec Scripts – Here’s What You Need to Know to Sell Yours (Guest Blog)
Logo
Ah, the ’90s. Headlines of huge spec sales and bidding wars filled the trades. The spec screenplay replaced the Great American Novel as the pastime everyone and his uncle was working on. If you could write a halfway decent actioner or rom/com, you had a shot in Hollywood.

Not so much today. According to Gointothestory.com, there were 173 spec sales in 1995… and 62 in 2017. Ouch! But do those numbers tell the whole story? “There was a long period when financiers weren’t buying as much,” UTA agent Alex Rincon said. “In the last 18 months, they have perhaps looked at their development slates and realized there was not as much original development as they had hoped and got slightly more aggressive.”

Indeed, things are heating up. Spec sales are again making headlines — witness the recent sale of not one but two specs by Emilia Serrano to Sony. Verve partner David Boxerbaum is positively upbeat.

Paramount Wins Cory Goodman Spec ‘The Oberlin Incident’; Safehouse & Aperture To Produce
Exclusive: Paramount just won an auction for The Oberlin Incident, a spec by Cory Goodman that Safehouse and Aperture will produce. Studio’s keeping logline on the down-low, but it’s described to me as a horror thriller. Deal was high six figures.

Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell at Safehouse Pictures and Adam Goldworm at Aperture Entertainment developed the script with Goodman. Pace of this deal shows the appetite for material that can be turned into movies quickly. Verve sent the script out to buyers Monday afternoon, and there were multiple bidders by the following day with Paramount prevailing late Tuesday evening.

Goodman’s specs have gotten buyers hot and bothered before, as he sold several potential franchise starters as pitches and specs resulting in seven-figures deals that included Hood to Sony and Lore to Warner Bros. He also wrote the Black List script The Last Witch Hunter, Underworld: Blood Wars and Priest.

‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ Review
Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Lara Pulver, Tobias Menzies, Charles Dance, James Faulkner, Peter Andersson, Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James, Daisy Head, Oliver Stark | Written by Cory Goodman | Directed by Anna Foerster

It’s been some five years since the last entry into the Underworld franchise – Underworld: Awakening, the third sequel to the 2003 original – no doubt because that film almost, Almost killed the series…. However as the saying goes, time heals and in the case of these movies that seems to be true. Not only has it been long enough for audiences to forget the risible fourth film, but the break in production also seems to have revitalised the filmmakers too – and this time round we have a film that truly lives up to the “vampires vs. werewolves” premise proffered so many years ago.

Whilst the politics and power-struggle machinations of Underworld: Blood Wars make this story feel overly complex, hence...

Underworld: Blood Wars Review
Author: Daniel Goodwin

The last time we saw Kate Beckinsale’s blood-sucking, wolf-slaying, blade swishing Selene she was battling a digital were-blob in a car park at the arse end of Underworld: Awakening: the abominable third sequel which belted the franchise into apparent oblivion. Failing to keep her promise of reclaiming the world from Lycans, made during Awakening’s tepid finale, Selene vanished from our screens. Five years later and following a staggering turn in Love and Friendship, Kate Beckinsale returns, back on autopilot, into her comfort zone and to the role that made her famous. While half a decade can’t quite waft away the stench of its putrid predecessor, Underworld: Blood Wars is surprisingly decent and easily the best of the franchise so far.

Elite soldier Selene is living as an outcast with defector/ pseudo beau David (Theo James), hunted by Lycans and the fifteen century old...

Movie Review: The Underworld franchise keeps sucking in Blood Wars
Five movies in, the Underworld series—the day-for-night soap opera to Resident Evil’s pulp anthology—remains humorlessly committed to the eternal conflict between high-tech, goth-industrial Draculoids and their grungy werewolf foes, soldiering on with its post-Matrix aesthetic of pleather catsuits, submachine guns, and floor-length coats with way too many buckles. Too rote to be trash, it has to make do with being mere junk, impatiently exposing more incoherent machinations and more condo-board-like council meetings involving the dullest vampires in moviedom. Written by Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter) and directed with sort-of-competence by the longtime Roland Emmerich associate Anna Foerster, the new, generically titled Underworld: Blood Wars is everything an entry in this notoriously interchangeable series is supposed to be, though anyone expecting it to be good has walked into the wrong theater. It has murky werewolf-on-vampire action, dialogue that sounds lifted from a dubbed early ’60s ...

Rogue One Wins 4th Weekend in a Row at the Box Office
James Earl Jones, Forest Whitaker, Wen Jiang, Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Daniel Naprous, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Spencer Wilding, and Riz Ahmed in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Most box office prognosticators presumed that Disney and LucasFilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would have no trouble winning the last few weeks of 2016, along with the first few weeks of 2016. So far, that prediction has come true, with the Star Wars spin-off winning the last three weeks of 2016, and now the first weekend of 2017, but just barely. Rogue One came out on top with $21.9 million, just barely beating Hidden Figures which expanded nationwide to earn $21.8 million. Since these movies are so close together, they may switch places when the actual figures are released tomorrow, but we'll have to want and see.

Box Office Mojo reports that the only new movie opening in wide release, Underworld 5, starring Kate Beckinsale as Selene, opened in 3,070 theaters, which is much higher than the estimated 2,300 theaters it was expected to open in, with Hidden Figures expanding into 2,471 theaters, an increase of 2,446 theaters. Another movie expanding nationwide,...

Kate Beckinsale in Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)
‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ Review Roundup: Critics Say the Franchise Needs a ‘Stake Through the Heart’
Kate Beckinsale in Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)
Kate Beckinsale returns as the “Vampire Death Dealer” Selene in “Underworld: Blood Wars,” the fifth installment in the action-horror franchise. While hardcore fans of the supernatural series may find delight in the new movie, critics aren’t so thrilled with it.

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman writes:

“[The film] should satisfy fans of the ‘Underworld’ movies just enough to live up to the previous films’ success … and to guarantee that Beckinsale, if she so chooses, can ride out this saga some more.”

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Frank Scheck’s bottom line was, “This anemic franchise desperately needs a transfusion,” adding in his review:

“Strictly for rabid fans, ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ is a generic, by-the-numbers genre exercise that, for all its talk of blood, is strictly anemic. It’s particularly depressing to see Kate Beckinsale once again don her tight black spandex outfit after displaying her versatility and comic skills in ‘Love & Friendship.’”

Will Underworld 5 Take Down Rogue One at the Box Office?
James Earl Jones, Forest Whitaker, Wen Jiang, Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Daniel Naprous, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Spencer Wilding, and Riz Ahmed in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Long before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit theaters last month, most box office analysts predicted that it would have no trouble winning the last three weeks in a row of 2016, with its reign possibly stretching into 2017 as well. So far, the analysts have been right, with Rogue One recently overtaking Captain America: Civil War as the second highest grossing movie at the domestic box office ($439.7 million) and seventh highest at the worldwide box office ($789.7 million). Entering its fourth weekend in theaters, it will go up against Sony's Underworld: Blood Wars as the only new movie in wide release, with limited release titles A Monster Calls and Hidden Figures also expanding nationwide. Even with this new competition, we're predicting that Rogue One will still find a way to end up on top of the box office heap this weekend.

Even with this influx of new competition, following a weekend...

Last Trailer For Underworld: Blood Wars Arrives
The promotional snippets for Underworld: Blood Wars have been coming thick and fast ahead of the movie’s January 6th release date, and so far, have kept very much to intrigue and action-based ‘money shots.’ Just two days ago, an international trailer appeared, and reshuffled much of what we’ve already been teased with. Now, we’re moving into the closing stages of this marketing campaign, and it seems that Screen Gems have decided to leave it all on the trailer screen.

The Underworld franchise has been one of the more lucrative female-led action film series, with a total worldwide box office haul of $458.5 million from four films. The most recent instalment – 2012’s Underworld Awakening – generated the biggest box office, with $160.1 million. Screen Gems are undoubtedly hoping that this upward financial trend continues and, if the stunning scenes in the trailer are anything to go by, it could well move in that direction.

Just days after the first trailer for Underworld Blood Wars arrived, we have the first poster as well, featuring Kate Beckinsale as Selene. Kate Beckinsale herself debuted this poster on her Twitter page earlier today. This will mark the fifth installment of this beloved franchise, which started in 2003 with the hit Underworld, where Kate Beckinsale played the vampire Selene for the first time. This new installment also brings back Theo James as David from 2012's Underworld: Awakening.
