When Phil Anselmo claims "Kicks Lovecraftian/Giger Ass!!!" of a film, it's a must-see. Not only did the Pantera/Down frontman fall in love with the film, but on further review, I found that Ethereal Chrysalis opened for Manborg at Toronto After Dark last year, and the film won the Sugar Skull audience award for best short at Morbido, among other awards. The Lovecraftian inspired short film Ethereal Chrysalis by Montreal based filmmaker Syl Disjonk is now available online for everyone who needs a little something to fuel their nightmares. Ethereal Chrysalis enjoyed lengthy run on the international film festival circuit. I first saw it a couple of years ago at Morbido where Disjonk took home a Silver Sugar Skull for an Audience Award. Falls into a nightmare where the inter-dimensional cosmic order is consumed by dementia. Leave your mind in the ethereal labyrinth of madness where the doors of perception become the annihilation of all rational thought. Christmas came a little bit early for eight filmmakers this month when the 4th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival handed out its annual awards. The fest was held earlier this month on Dec. 2-4.

The big winner this year was Steven Strauss’ Bronze, which took home the Best Feature Award. The controversial film tackles the issue of female “consent” through the story of three teenage girls who leave the comfortable confines of their suburban New Jersey home for a wild night of wicked fun — but end up getting into way more trouble than they wanted.

Another major winner at the fest was Usama Alshaibi’s Profane, which won the Best Experimental Award. Profane was also named this month as Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s Movie of the Year for 2011. The film, which combines experimental and traditional narrative filmmaking techniques, focuses on an emotionally lost female Muslim sex...
