Jason Universe and Angry Orchard Hard Cider welcome us to freaky season
Image
2025 marks the 45th anniversary of the release of one of the most popular horror movies ever made, Friday the 13th, the movie that launched my favorite franchise, and one that I feel is underrated, as it’s a great film that often gets overshadowed by its sequels. Last year, the Friday the 13th franchise rights holders at Horror Inc. announced that they were launching the Jason Universe, which would encompass “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.” One of the projects they’re working on is a collaboration with Angry Orchard Hard Cider that includes a 13 minute vignette called Sweet Revenge, which will be released through the Jason Universe YouTube channel and through a site hosted by Angry Orchard Hard Cider on August 13th.

Jason Voorhees Lives in First Teaser for 'Jason Universe'
Image
Jason Voorhees is back. At least one version of the classic horror character has shown up in a teaser trailer for what has been described as a "short-form vignette." A few weeks ago, we reported that Jason was returning in a short film titled Sweet Revenge, and now a teaser has been released. The iconic killer is back to slash and dice camp counselors, but is this the official return of the Friday the 13thfranchise? Far from it.

The short is part of the initiative known as Jason Universe, which will essentially expand the Friday the 13th franchise. This newly announced revival is blatant proof that people on top can't agree on how to move the franchise forward. It's an entertainment venture that involves several visions, and is increasingly confusing fans of the original franchise. To break it down, some own Jason with the hockey mask, others own the Friday the 13th titles,...

Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees Finally Resurfaces in New Footage After 16-Year Hiatus, New Film Confirmed
Image
Jason Voorhees has finally resurfaced, back to doing what he does best in all new footage. Coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the original Friday the 13th, the new "Jason Universe" had a presence at San Diego Comic-Con where horror fans were treated a sneak peek at what's to come in the future of the franchise.

At the Jason Universe panel, fans were shown never-before-seen archival photos along with being told about favorite memories and anecdotes from Friday the 13th. Also unveiled was a new trailer for Sweet Revenge, a short film developed through a partnership with the Angry Orchard hard cider brand, which features new footage of Jason. While Jason is only shown briefly in the trailer, it marks the first time an official depiction of the character has been seen in new footage since the 2009 reboot. Check out the trailer below.

The Sweet Revenge short is directed by Mike Nelson.

Image
Jason Voorhees is officially returning to screens, and fans got their first taste at San Diego Comic-Con. The project is called Sweet Revenge, and it’s part of the bigger Jason Universe plan to celebrate 45 years of the Friday the 13th franchise.

The first footage was revealed during the panel at Sdcc, where it was announced that Sweet Revenge is a short-form vignette, which basically means a short film, and it’s being called the main event for the anniversary campaign. Jason’s been gone for years, so seeing him return in any form has already got longtime fans buzzing.

The short will premiere on August 13, 2025, which just so happens to fall on a Wednesday, not a Friday, but the date still marks a big comeback for one of horror’s most iconic killers. And this time, he’s not coming alone. Angry Orchard is sponsoring the project, which adds...

A Brutal Horror Film That “Makes vampires fun and nasty again” Is Now Streaming on Prime Video
Image
I am such a fan of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence. They have demonstrated a mastery of the anthology format as well as feature-length fare. The group first came on our radar via a segment in the 2012 horror anthology V/H/S, and they’ve been at it ever since. Following their arrival on the scene, the collective went on to helm the brilliant horror comedy Ready or Not and the celebrated slasher sequels Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

The group originally started as a foursome, but is now a twosome comprised of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Despite losing producers Chad Villella and Justin Martinez along the way, the collective has never ceased to impress.

Abigail, a more recent Radio Silence picture, recently made its way onto Prime Video, and that is more than enough reason to spend a moment championing this outlandish and undeniably gruesome effort.

What is Abigail about?...

A New Friday The 13th Movie Is On The Way, But Not How You'd Expect
Image
Some good news today for "Friday the 13th" fans as, for the first time in a very long time, we're getting a new film featuring Jason Voorhees. The only bad news is that it's a short film and not a feature film, but after more than 15 years without any movies in this franchise, beggars can't be choosers. I myself am one of those beggars, so I'll take what I can get.

As announced by Variety, Mike P. Nelson, of "Wrong Turn" (2021) fame, is set to direct "Sweet Revenge," a project -- one labeled a "vignette" -- featuring the famed Camp Crystal Lake killer of "Friday the 13th" fame. The short film hails from the folks at Horror Inc., who own the rights to the property, and is part of the ongoing Jason Universe, which launched last year. Though no specific plot details are available for the time being, the production is teasing,...

Sweet Revenge: Mike P. Nelson directing Jason Voorhees vignette sponsored by Angry Orchard Hard Cider
Writer/director Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) recently made his way through production on a remake of the classic 1984 Christmas slasher movie Silent Night, Deadly Night, which is set to reach theatres on December 12th. Now, Variety reports that Nelson is working in the world of another classic ’80s slasher, Friday the 13th, as he’s writing, directing, and producing (through his Rockford Road Pictures banner) a “bloody short-form vignette” called Sweet Revenge, which is sponsored by Angry Orchard Hard Cider. So it sounds like “vignette” is a fancy word for “commercial” in this case, as this is probably just an Angry Orchard Hard Cider ad that features Jason Voorhees.

Sweet Revenge will be released through the Jason Universe YouTube channel and through a site hosted by Angry Orchard Hard Cider. This is said to be “part of a larger collaboration” between Angry Orchard Hard Cider and the Friday the 13th franchise.

A multi-platform expansion of the franchise from its original owners, the Jason Universe has been taking shape this year, with everything from Neca toys to a Halloween Horror Nights attraction announced thus far. What else is coming this year, you ask?

Variety has announced Sweet Revenge this afternoon, described as a “short-form vignette” that will serve as “the centerpiece of the franchise’s bold 45th anniversary campaign.”

What the hell does that mean? Well, it sounds like Sweet Revenge is a glorified commercial for Angry Orchard Hard Cider, with the short set to debut on the Jason Universe YouTube channel as well as a site hosted by Angry Orchard. Variety notes in their report that Angry Orchard is “sponsoring the vignette as part of a larger collaboration with the franchise.”

Jason Universe teases, “fans will drop into a chilling weekend in the woods filled with blood-soaked surprises only Jason can deliver.

Samara Weaving at an event for The Oscars (2018)
Six years ago, genre regular Samara Weaving starred in a very cool horror comedy called Ready or Not, which was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who went on to make the two most recent Scream sequels and the “Dracula’s daughter” movie Abigail. Last year, it was announced that a sequel is now moving forward – and while Escape Room director Adam Robitel was attached to take the helm of Ready or Not 2 (now known as Ready or Not: Here I Come) when it was first announced, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have since stepped up to direct the sequel, which they have promised will be “an absolute banger.” Weaving is returning for the follow-up and we’ve previously heard that Kathryn Newton, who worked with the directors on Abigail, is in the cast. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that they’re being joined in the cast by...

John Krasinski Recruits Natalie Portman for a Treasure Hunt in First ‘Fountain of Youth’ Trailer
Image
If you’ve been craving the feeling that Nicolas Cage’s “I’m gonna steal the Declaration of Independence” gave you back in “National Treasure,” John Krasinski might be able to give it back in the first trailer for “Fountain of Youth.”

The film centers on two estranged siblings, played by Krasinski and Natalie Portman, who team up — albeit a little begrudgingly in Portman’s case — to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. Per the official synopsis, “They must use their knowledge of history to follow clues on an epic adventure that will change their lives … and possibly lead to immortality.”

You can watch the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s new movie below.

The thing is, according to an ominous warning from Stanley Tucci’s character, “there’s a reason the fountain was hidden,” and Krasinski being able to find it will almost certainly cause problems.

Fountain of Youth trailer: John Krasinski, Natalie Portman star in Guy Ritchie adventure film
Dexter Fletcher at an event for 2020 Golden Globe Awards (2020)

Guy Ritchie's 'Fountain of Youth' Trailer Sends John Krasinski and Natalie Portman on a Globetrotting Quest for Immortality
Image
Apple Original Films has just dropped the first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth, and it looks like the director best known for gritty gangster flicks and slick spy thrillers is going full-on globe-trotting adventure mode instead of getting stabby in the streets of London — and bringing a stacked cast along for the ride. Starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as estranged siblings with a shared obsession for the impossible, Fountain of Youth follows them on an adventure to track down the legendary myth itself: the source of immortality. Would anyone really want to live forever in this hellscape? Eh.

Their journey kicks off as a globe-spanning heist, but quickly spirals into something far more epic — and potentially life-altering. Using their deep knowledge of history (and probably a few clever disguises), the duo must solve ancient clues, outrun rival treasure hunters, and, of course, dodge bullets along the way.

David Arquette Returning From the Dead For Horror Sequel 'Scream 7'
Image
Scream 7will somehow bring someone else back from the dead, and it's a name that will please fans...although confusion is bound to be in play regarding how this character returns. With the recent cast additions of Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard, two Ghostface killers who met their demise long ago, at least this return is someone on the side of good.

Per Deadline, David Arquetteis officially returning as Deputy Dewey Riley in Scream 7. No details were revealed about how his character returns and plot details are pretty scarce about the film itself, but director Kevin Williamson and writer Guy Busick better have something pretty brilliant up their sleeves to make this make sense. As fans will remember, Arquette's Dewey Riley was taken out by Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) in 2022's Scream. It proved to be a bittersweet moment as it was a heroic end to the character,...

Patrick Dempsey Reveals Why He's Not in 'Scream 7'
Image
For a while there, it seemed like we would see the love story between Sydney Prescott (Neve Campell) and Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey) play out in Scream 7. As franchise fans will recall, the two were very much a thing in Scream 3, and when we learned in Scream 5 that Sydney was married to Mark... all the pieces seemed to connect, and fans were excited about the continuation of Sydney and Mark's love story. Fast-forward to January 2025: we learned that Joel McHale would join the franchise as Sydney's husband, Mark Evans.

While initial reports indicated that Dempsey was in talks to return to Scream 7, negotiations ultimately failed. Dempsey has now confirmed the reason: scheduling conflicts brought on by the catastrophic California wildfires. Speaking with Variety, Dempsey revealed:

"It just didn't work out. We were dealing with the fires and everything that was going on, and the schedule didn't work out,...

That led the team to tackle a resuscitation of the Scream franchise, first with Scream, in 2022, and then Scream VI in 2023. The movies starred Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. The duo departed the franchise in order to make Abigail, which starred Barrera,...
