Amazon Cancels Neighbours, Find Out When the Soap Goes Off the Air For Good
Image
Unfortunately, the Australian soap opera Neighbours is experiencing a dose of deja vu.

Goodbye, Ramsay Street Residents

According to Variety and other outlets, Amazon has canceled Neighbours, the long-running Australian soap that first ended in 2022 after 37 seasons. In 2023, Amazon’s FreeVee platform suddenly resurrected the series that once starred Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, Kylie Minogue, Russell Crowe, and Liam Hemsworth.

Neighbours immediately made a splash with Pearce and The O.C. alum Mischa Baron making appearances. In fact, in 2024, it received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Drama. It also received an Outstanding Guest Performer nod for Pearce, who briefly carried his Mike Young role over to the new production.

In late 2024, the show tried another guest starring stunt when producers cast Selling Sunset and American soap vet Chrishell Stause. She played the slightly unstable Yaz Shields. Her lighting director targeted one of the show’s fan favorites, Holly Hoyland,...

How Guy Pearce Explored “Extreme” Power In ‘The Brutalist’: “I Suppose On Some Level It’s The Donald Trump Version”
Image
Given the number of indelible performances he’s given since breaking out world-wide with only his third big-screen appearance—The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1994—it’s astonishing that Guy Pearce doesn’t have an awards shelf creaking with the weight of career-affirming statuettes. That could change after Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, an epic drama (complete with 15-minute intermission) co-written with Mona Fastvold, in which an emigrant Hungarian architect, László Toth (Adrien Brody), seeks political asylum, and a creative outlet, in post-war America. As the ultra-rich Harrison Lee Van Buren, an apparent philistine who becomes Toth’s artistic champion, Pearce steals the show.

Here—speaking from the sanctuary of his home studio, surrounded by an impressive (and tidy) display of guitars, keyboards, and all manner of color-coded cables—Pearce reflects on his near 40-year career in TV and movies. Surprisingly, after discussing some of his finest roles,...

Daytime Emmy 2024 winners: Here’s who took home the coveted awards
Tamara Braun
The 51st Daytime Emmys brought fashion and wins to the stage.

CBS hosted the event, allowing it to be televised live for viewers to revel in what their favorite soap stars were wearing and what they were doing.

The nominations this year were all over the board, and while we had our predictions, we weren’t sure who would actually take home the coveted awards.

In a year affected by writers’ strikes, scribes wrote some of the material the actors worked with and did a good job making it their own.

While there are varying opinions about who won each category, only one can take home the statue.

Here’s which soaps won each category tailored to the genre.

Who won a Daytime Emmy?

Some categories didn’t offer an actor or actress for a particular soap. But without further do, here is a list of winners in the soap-centric categories.

This Wild Horror Western Features One of Guy Pearce's Best Performances
Image
Guy Pearce has been one of Hollywood’s most prominent and versatile character actors for decades. Before finding big-screen success, he started off on the long-running Australian soap opera Neighbours, where he played Mike Young from 1986-1989 in over 450 episodes (and even returned for the finale over 30 years later). The actor had been able to get into a few movies in the early '90s, but none made any legitimate impact until The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, a road trip dramedy that follows two drag performers (Pearce and fellow Australian actor Huge Weaving) and a transgender woman (the iconic Terrance Stamp) as they travel across the desert while on tour. The film was a surprise hit when it arrived in festivals like Cannes in 1994 with audiences and critics alike, giving Pearce plenty of attention and opportunities, including landing the role of Ed Exley in L.A. Confidential opposite Russell Crowe.

Neighbours Recap: What Happened to Toadie, Mel, Paul, Terese & the Rest of Ramsay Street In the Finale
Image
Contains spoilers for Neighbours.

Last year’s announcement that Neighbours was ending prompted the return of its prodigal children. Not just the on-screen ones journeying to Ramsay Street to reunite with lost loves/burn down Lassiters/marry Paul Robinson, but also us – the Aussie soap’s lapsed viewers. We came back too, sticking one last hopeful hand into the cookie jar of nostalgia, hoping to feel… well, anything.

The only problem: Neighbours was unrecognisable. There was no Helen Daniels and Bouncer had long retired to the big farm in the sky. If you’d drifted away at some point between the third Lucy Robinson and the plane crash that turned Harold Bishop into the Erinsborough strangler, then this is for you. Here’s a handy guide to Neighbours’ current plots and characters. Never ask ‘Who’s Paige? again.

What Happened In the Finale?

In July 2022, more or less every family...

Neighbours on Freevee: Release Date, Plot, Cast, and Everything Else You Need to Know
Primetime (1989)
Unlike most American soaps, Australia's Neighbours usually avoids back-from-the-dead stories.

Only two characters ever have gotten a miraculous resurrection (Harold Bishop and Dee Bliss), although many have returned as ghostly visitors.

But the soap itself is another story. Several months after its cancellation, Freevee on Amazon picked up Neighbours.

This means North American fans can access episodes online for the first time since 2014, when it was briefly streamed on Hulu.

Whether you're a new viewer curious about the series or a long-time fan relieved about the revival, you probably want to know what to expect. We've got all the news in this post; check for updates as the premiere date draws closer.

Guy Pearce Confirms Return To Aussie Soap ‘Neighbours’ Where He Originally Made His Name
Image
Guy Pearce was declared ‘Most Valuable Player’ after his show-stealing turn in the finale of Aussie soap Neighbours last year.

Now the star of L.A. Confidential and Memento has confirmed he will return to the show’s location of Ramsay Street once more, following news that it is being revived by Amazon Freevee and Prime Video.

Pearce played Mike Young for more than 400 episodes following his debut in 1986, and returned for the show’s apparent grand finale in July 2022, where Mike was seen reuniting with love interest Jane Harris (Australian actress Annie Jones) and buying a house together on Ramsay Street.

Pearce told Channel Nine’s good Weekend Talks podcast that he wanted to respect the show’s storyline, and appear again as needed.

He revealed:

“Annie (Jones) and I called each other, ‘What do we do now, because we’re living in the street.’

“And she said, ‘Well I...

How to Host the Ultimate Neighbours Finale Party
Paul Sherman
If you’d do it for Eurovision, then my god man, do it for Ramsay Street. On Friday the 29th of July (Thursday the 28th in Australia), open your home and your heart and pour one out for the Erinsborough crew. Because these people deserve a send-off. For 37 years, they’ve been trapped in a washing machine cycle set to stress (intense soil). Kidnappings, drownings, deadly rivalries, adultery, murder, Karl Kennedy… They’ve each had to stand in line and take their turn burning down the Lassiters Complex, getting amnesia and marrying Paul Robinson, and why?

For us, that’s why, to beam some bright Australian sunshine into our grey, grey lives. Throwing them a farewell party is the least we can do in return. But how to go about it? What snacks to prepare, or decorations to rustle up? What’s the playlist and the dress code? Don’t...

Bob Saget’s Touring Partner Mike Young Remembers Comedian: ‘He Was a Loving Soul’

Mike Young first met Bob Saget on the set of “Entourage.” The two comedians immediately hit it off, and Saget offered Young an opening slot on a couple dates…which soon turned into 12 years on the road together. As close friends and collaborators, the duo was set to embark on a 20-city tour starting at the end of January. After Saget’s shocking death on Sunday, Young spoke with Variety to share his favorite memories of Saget, reflecting on the legendary comedian’s impact.

“My biggest takeaway from Bob as a comic was his ability to be open and honest. He would crack his heart open and let the audience know who he really was,” Young tells Variety. “You could really see his sensitivity up there.”

Off stage, Saget was a man who loved people. Young recalls a time when the pair flew in to Omaha, Neb., for a show.
