Director Boston McConnaughey co-wrote Alien Country with Renny Grames who, as well as being one of the film’s stars, is also his wife and collaborator on several shorts for their YouTube Channel. The film grew out of the making of those shorts and, from the start of writing to release, took up nine years of their lives. That’s a lot of time to invest in a project, was the finished product worth it?
Alien Country gets off to a fast start as a dirt bike rider runs from the police. Despite going off-road and jumping a river, he eventually finds himself trapped. He releases a strange glowing object from his bag before making a run for it on foot.

"Sand Hill Shuffle," the first episode of Silicon Valley Season 2, featured a conversation that didn't seem much more than cautionary at the time, but comes to mean something much more by the end of "Two Days of the Condor." While Richard and Pied Piper are being wooed with a party at At&T Park, before Gavin Belson's lawsuit sent the Pied Piper team into a full-tilt tizzy, Richard happens upon Javeed (Charan Prabhakar), a colleague who warns Richard about the dangers of accepting high evaluations, as he just recently lost everything thanks to an unrealistic evaluation. It's Javeed's story that convinces Richard to demand a fair, reduced evaluation, in the hopes of not ending up like Javeed and maybe, just maybe, doing the right thing rather than letting money get to his head. [caption id="attachment_472969" align="alignright" width="350"] Image via HBO/caption] As "Two Days of the Condor" ends, however, Richard is seemingly in a similar spot as Javeed,...

The opening sequence of “Sand Hill Shuffle,” the first episode of Silicon Valley Season 2, features Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch), the gangly genius behind Pied Piper, attempting to hit a ball off of a pitcher from the San Francisco Giants. As Richard is not one for sports or outdoors activities, the speed of the pitch startles and scares him, and the image of him leaping away from the pitch could serve as the encapsulation of the tumult that Richard and the Pied Piper team must grapple with now that their data-compression algorithm is a hot ticket in the tech hub. Indeed, the stress, strategizing, and preposterous competitiveness that goes into securing a lucrative pitch is the focus of the first few episodes of Silicon Valley Season 2, and “Sand Hill Shuffle” works as a funny and contemplative opening aria. [caption id="attachment_441821" align="alignright" width="353"] Image via HBO/caption] The chance to hang out with the San Francisco...

Abandoned Mine starts its VOD and limited theatrical release today, and we caught up with writer/director Jeff Chamberlain for our latest Q&A feature. He talks about taking on Abandoned Mine as his first feature film, creating the legend and characters from the movie, and the challenges of filming in an actual mine:
I’ve read that the story for Abandoned Mine came from Scott Woldman. How did you two get together for this project and why was this a story you wanted to direct?
Jeff Chamberlain: One day I was sitting in the office of my producing partner Mark Victor (Poltergeist). We were discussing the kind of project I was looking for to direct. He pulled a script off the shelf called The Mine by Scott Woldman. I loved the title and the concept – the way Mark described it. After reading it, I still loved the concept.

Well this wasn’t my pint of beer, if ya know what I’m saying. Had Abandoned Mine came out around the time I was in love with Dawson’s Creek and Party of Five behind closed doors, it probably would’ve worked for me. Unfortunately, it just felt like a really dated Lifetime horror film with a slight Halloween essence about it. It’s not completely awful, but that’s kind of the problem. I prefer my films to be either excellent, so bad they’re good, or goddamn laughable. I aint got much time for “blah”. And that’s pretty much how I felt about Abandoned Mine. The horror is never once horrifying and the intensity is never really intense. It’s just all around mediocre, and I find mediocrity more...
