Tracing the evolution of a fictional motorbike gang known as the Vandals, writer-director Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders takes its inspiration from a photobook of the same name by influential mid-20th-century photographer Danny Lyon. A major contributor to the “new realism” photography movement, Lyon lived alongside his leather-clad petrolhead subjects for months at a time, helping him create urgent, spontaneous images of their outlaw lifestyle that oozed authenticity. Unfortunately, those latter qualities are in short supply in the film, but the sheer exuberance of the story and the stylistic brio of Nichols’s direction often compensate.
The Bikeriders is narrated by Kathy (Jodie Comer), the girlfriend of fiercely committed young Vandals member Benny (Austin Butler). She relays the idiosyncrasies and transgressions of the gang from a slight remove as it evolves from a blue-collar fraternity and surrogate family to a nihilistic crime syndicate. As endearing as Kathy’s disapproving bemusement can be,...

From the word go, Steven Soderbergh’s crime caper Full Circle works furiously to introduce us to all of its relevant players. Derek (Timothy Olyphant) and Sam (Claire Danes) are a wealthy couple who enjoy a life of luxury thanks to the success of Sam’s father, Jeff (Dennis Quaid), a famous chef. But while everything seems like the picture of perfection inside their lavishly remodeled New York apartment, dark family secrets are dragged, kicking and screaming, into the light when their teenage son, Jared (Ethan Stoddard), is kidnapped.
The abduction plan is put into motion by a Queens-based crime syndicate headed by Cch Pounder’s enigmatic matriarch Savitri Mahabir. She believes that the actions of her late husband have left her family cursed for years, and after consulting with a spiritual leader back in Guyana, she concludes that capturing young Jared is the only way to remove it.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film reviews for the new releases “The Blackening,” a tart horror/comedy directed by Tim Story and the mystery comedy/romance “Maggie Moores(s), directed by John Slattery. Both In theaters since June 16th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
“The Blackening” makes fun of the trope that the African-American character is often the first to die in horror movies by placing an all-Black group of friends in the proverbial cabin in the woods, during the Juneteenth weekend. There are confronted by a masked killer who demands that they rank their “degree of blackness” so that he can determine the correct order in which to kill them, and the cabin dwellers must rely on a combination of street smarts and their own knowledge of black history and horror films to survive.

Maggie Moore(s) aims to please with a mixture of mystery, buddy cop humor and a sprinkle of romance. While most of the comedy never lands and is often half-baked, the film, directed by John Slattery from a screenplay by Paul Bernbaum, has a winning cast and a serviceable true crime premise that will at least keep you interested the whole way through, even if the ending rushes to tie up loose ends.
The film opens with Chief Jordan Sanders (Jon Hamm) and his deputy (Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed) investigating the murder of Maggie Moore (Mary Holland). They feel like they’re missing something from the case, since the other, seemingly unrelated, murder of Maggie Moore (Louisa Krause) happened ten days prior. We then go back to the beginning when Jay Moore (Micah Stock), an unintelligent franchise owner, who is buying spoiled products from an unapproved source, asks a deaf hitman,...

Jon Hamm, Tina Fey, and Nate from Ted Lasso (Nick Mohammed) do their best to make Maggie Moore(s) a stand-out comedy. At times, the inventive story and its stars succeed. Other times, it feels as if this uneven yet still engaging romp would have worked better if it had been a limited series in à la Fargo. The premise is priceless.
Two women with the same name are murdered just days apart. Enter small-town police chief Jordan Sanders (Hamm), who sifts through an array of suspects — cheating husbands, lonely hearts, very nosy neighbors, and nutty contract killers. The man has enough going on in his shaky personal life. Does he need this stress?

On paper, the concept of Maggie Moore(s), which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is incredibly fascinating: a darkly comedic murder mystery about a bumbling police chief (Jon Hamm) and his wisecracking deputy (Nick Mohammed) trying to solve the mystery involving the deaths of two women who have the same name and were killed around the same time. Add in the fact that it is loosely based on a true story, and you have all the proper ingredients to make the next Coen Brothers masterpiece, and it seems like the film’s director, John Slattery, thought so as well as he takes the Coen Brothers influence and runs with it. I just wished that he ran in a different direction though because the end result is a tonally dissonant, poorly shot and overall underwhelming film.

As an actor, John Slattery has never appeared in a movie directed by the Coen brothers, but judging from his new film, he clearly aims to emulate their work. Maggie Moore(s), Slattery's second directorial feature, works so hard to be the next Fargo that the strain shows early, and oftentimes, to the movie's detriment. Screenwriter Paul Bernbaum doesn't have the Coens's wit or their way with unique characters, and Slattery doesn't quite have a handle on the movie's tone. Still, Maggie Moore(s) is a mostly pleasant, laid-back viewing experience, despite a plot that involves a pair of gruesome murders.
Slattery doesn't show up onscreen in Maggie Moore(s), instead giving the lead role to his Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm. Hamm plays Jordan Sanders, the chief of police in an Arizona town who's faced with two murder victims who inexplicably have the same name. Hamm gave a fantastic...

If his post-“Mad Men” career has taught us anything, it’s that Jon Hamm is a natural comic actor who happens to be great in dramatic roles rather than the other way around. At the risk of downplaying his exemplary work as Don Draper, the 52-year-old has seemed most in his element in the likes of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and especially last year’s criminally underseen “Confess, Fletch.” “Maggie Moore(s)” finds him somewhere in the middle of the comedy/drama spectrum as a small-town police chief investigating the murders of two women with the same name — an intriguing premise to be sure, but one that Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery, in his sophomore directorial effort, struggles to bring to a satisfying conclusion.
Part of the problem is that it isn’t actually a mystery. Beginning with a title card informing us that “some of this actually happened,...

But their latest collaboration is a clear departure, as well as a rare chance to see Fey out of her comedic zone.

There are actors who direct films, and there are those who establish themselves as real-deal filmmakers. In the first category we find John Slattery, a fine actor who, after a respectable career as “that guy,” reached a new level at age 45 thanks to Mad Men. The AMC series was still on the air when Slattery directed his first film, God’s Pocket, in 2014, and he returns now, nearly 10 years on, with the dark comedy Maggie Moore(s). Following his on-screen reunion with Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm in last year’s Confess, Fletch, Slattery here casts the actor in the lead role as Jordan Sanders, a lonely police chief investigating the connection between the murders of two women, each named Maggie Moore.

Tina Fey and Jon Hamm star in the trailer for Maggie Moore(s), an upcoming comedy thriller that also serves as a stealth Mad Men reunion. Fey gained acclaim as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and then as the star of 30 Rock, a sitcom she created. Hamm's background is rooted more in drama, most notably the classic AMC series Mad Men, though he has tried his hand successfully at comedy in films such as Tag and Bridesmaids.
The first official trailer for the Fey and Hamm-led movie was released today through E! News, clocking in at just over two minutes. Check out the trailer below:

Murphy) and the Folgers, Ruth (Alison Wright) finds herself front and center of a coup in First Class, as the elite passengers on Snowpiercer want to get to the bottom of just who exactly is running the train – Mr. Wilford or Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), who just happens to always have a means of covering up the fact that the leader and creator of Snowpiercer isn’t actually aboard the train. The jig is up now,...

Hello, everyone. Last week, I had to take a few days off to deal with some personal stuff, but I’m back now with my latest recap for TNT’s Snowpiercer series that digs into episodes 4 and 5, where we see the culmination of the murder mystery aboard the titular train, as well as the resulting actions and fallout from everything that follows once the killers and their motives are revealed. Oh, and there’s a whole lot more happening as well.
Now, on to the good stuff…
In “Without Their Maker,” the theme of episode four is spelled out rather simply: systems resist change without their maker, which of course is in relation to the fact that Mr. Wilford is more myth than man after seven years aboard the Snowpiercer. And with Nikki now brutally murdered, Layton (Daveed Diggs) sets out to find the killer that must be a First Class passenger,...

This Snowpiercer review contains spoilers.
Snowpiercer Episode 3
One of the smartest things Snowpiercer has done with its first season is, as characters gain prominence in the story, offer up some cold openings. In this case, Dr. Klimpt (Happy Anderson) is the one discussing how the economy of Snowpiercer functions. Not the buy-ins of the first class passengers, but the real economy that shuttles drugs from third class to first class and back again, trading drugs for gold for sex for the most important thing of all, access.
All things that people kill, and have been killed for, on a train that’s 1,001 cars long. It’s exposition, and it’s needed exposition for the world the show is building, but by and large it’s been done stylishly and provides a bit of insight into the character giving the explanation that is necessary to flesh out secondary characters like the good doctor.

"The reason you survived, is because you're a very uncommon girl." Fox has surprised us with a brand new trailer for The New Mutants, the sort-of X-Men spin-off movie. Although they've dropped "X-Men" from the title and are pulling back calling this "an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring." Five young mutants, discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. The first teaser trailer for this debuted in 2017, it was set to open in 2018, but after extensive reshoots and retooling (and Fox being bought by Disney) they've made an entirely new movie which will finally be released in April. Starring Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Mirage; with Alice Braga and Happy Anderson.

To say that we’ve been waiting a long, long time for Bad Boys 3 would be to deal in wild understatement.
It’s going on 16 years since audiences last glimpsed Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s electric chemistry, leaving many to fear that 2003’s Bad Boys 2 really signaled the end of their buddy-cop shenanigans. But against all odds – delays, director dropouts… you name it – Bad Boys For Life has emerged blinking into the sunlight, ready to deliver a helping of cinematic nostalgia.
Set for release in January 2020, Sony has followed up on yesterday’s sneak peek with a truly explosive new preview of Bad Boys For Life, teasing fast cars, intense shootouts, and that signature energy between Smith and Lawrence’s detectives: Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett. It’s not too much of a stretch to say that their chemistry is the glue that’s held this franchise together after all these years,...

High-octane action ensues in the latest teaser for Bad Boys For Life, Sony’s long-long-gestating sequel featuring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fast-talking agents.
Embedded below, it signals perhaps the perfect primer for tomorrow’s trailer reveal, as we catch a glimpse of Smith and Lawrence speeding through the streets, before engaging in a suitably explosive firefight with a helicopter. It’s not quite Bayhem – the flavor of blockbuster action that defined the opening two installments in the Bad Boys series – but we’ll be damned if it’s not entertaining.
When, exactly, we can expect the full trailer to debut is another question entirely (9am Pt is our best guess), but we’ll have a full play-by-play breakdown for you here as soon as it’s live. For now, though, you’ll have to make do with another 15-second sizzle reel heralding the return of Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.

Netflix's psychological thriller Mindhunter first premiered back in 2017, a 10-episode drama based on the true crime book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit. Now that it's returned for a second season, you might be wondering once more: is it based on a true story? Pretty much.
The three main characters on Mindhunter are based on real people, though they aren't exact copies. The two FBI special agents from the bureau's Behavioral Science Unit are Holden Ford and Bill Tench, played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, respectively. Those two men are based on John E. Douglas (who co-authored the book on which Mindhunter is based) and Robert K. Ressler.
Douglas, now 74 years old, is one of the first criminal profilers in the United States. After serving in the Air Force, he went to work for the FBI in 1970 - first as a sniper in the Swat...

That's a wrap! Bad Boys for Life has officially wrapped filming, with stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence confirming the news, while taking some time to celebrate. It's been nearly 25 years since the original entry in this franchise first hit theaters, and this sequel has been in the works for a very long time. After a great many speed bumps, several different filmmakers and quite a few false starts, the next installment is finally in the can.
Will Smith took to Instagram to confirm that filming on Bad Boys 3 has officially finished. The actor shared an image of himself alongside his co-star and friend Martin Lawrence. The pair are sitting in folding chairs, umbrellas in hand, for shade, with Mexico serving as the backdrop behind them. Smith had this to say in the caption provided with the photo.

A little movie called Bird Box started streaming on Netflix back on December 21, 2018. You may have heard of it. The film starred Sandra Bullock and birthed an internet full of memes, challenges, and more. It was kind of a thing last year to put it lightly. And it turns out the movie's success has inspired the author of the book on which the Netflix original film was based, Josh Malerman to take to the typewriter once more for a sequel novel called Malorie. A sequel that will follow Sandra Bullock's character from the movie once again and the author promises it will expand on what we know about the creatures.
Josh Malerman says this about working on Malorie.
"In the time between Bird Box coming out and the time since I've been writing Malorie, I've been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl.

Here’s a film where the term “they don’t make em like this anymore” really does apply. A largely single location independent drama with stylized dialogue and a less than politically correct edge? Mixing David Mamet with Quentin Tarantino would normally mean an indie with a wise ass streak and a modern sensibility. Here, with The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, what we have is something far more old fashioned than that. Essentially a whodunit, this flick offers up a compelling tale that keeps you wired in right up until the very end. With a single minded focus, it tells a razor sharp story about as well as it can be told, complete with a hell of an ending, to boot. A drama/mystery, the movie is literally a standoff. Gannon (James Badge Dale) is a former cop who lives in the woods and is a member of a local militia.

Arriving in theaters and on VOD and digital platforms this weekend is writer/director Henry Dunham’s taut and tension-filled thriller The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. Starring James Badge Dale, Brian Geraghty, Chris Mulkey, Gene Jones, Happy Anderson, Patrick Fischler, and Robert Aramayo, Dunham’s debut feature follows an ex-cop named Gannon (Dale), who joined a militia group after he gave up his career. Eager to put his law enforcement days behind him, Gannon is reluctantly tasked with figuring out which one of his fellow militia members are behind a shooting at a police funeral once it’s discovered that one of the men might have motives bigger than minding the interests of their controversial group.

The film begins in total silence to the point where you wonder if something went wrong with the sound. The camera pans through still trees until finding Gannon (James Badge Dale) on the ground with rifle ready to take out the deer we can assume is somewhere out of frame. It’s only when we hear the pop of guns in the distance that we realize first-time writer/director Henry Dunham has been meticulously ensuring that we process exactly what he needs us to before heading towards the solitary locale we’ll spend the rest of The Standoff at Sparrow Creek‘s short yet tense 88-minute runtime. Having Gannon visible when those blasts go off is deliberate because there must be no question that he’s the one man we can implicitly trust.

I’ve got a trailer here that you’ve got to watch for a new thriller called The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. The movie premiered at Fantastic Fest and was met with a lot of positive buzz.
This first trailer for the movie is certainly riveting and quickly got my attention and held me in. The story centers on a group of militia members who fall into a state of paranoia and anxiety after one of their members goes and shoots up a police funeral. The thing is, no one knows who did it and someone is hiding something.
Here’s the official synopsis:
After a mass shooting at a police funeral, reclusive ex-cop Gannon realizes that the killer belongs to the same militia he joined after quitting the force. Knowing the police will be closing in on them, Gannon quarantines his fellow militiamen in a remote lumber mill. There,...

"Do you have any idea what's going on out there?" Rlje has debuted the first trailer for one of this year's big discoveries, a contained thriller titled The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, the feature debut of Henry Dunham. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, then played to rave reviews at Fantastic Fest, earning some of the best buzz out of both fests as a major find. It's a deviously smart film about a group of men in a militia who meet in a warehouse after a shooting, only to discover that one of their guns is missing. They begin to accuse each other in an attempt to figure out who did it, and it gets even better as it goes on. This has been compared to Reservoir Dogs, but it's really something of its own and it's an incredible debut. Sparrow Creek stars James Badge Dale, Patrick Fischler,...

Netflix is moving forward with Bright 2, bringing aboard Evan Spiliotopoulos to write the script, taking over for original Bright writer Max Landis. Original Bright director David Ayer is returning to the helm, with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton expected to reprise their roles as Daryl Ward and Nick Jakoby, respectively. Netflix has yet to announce a production start date, or a release date for this sequel, but it will mark the first sequel for any of the streaming service's original movies.
Sources say that Max Landis, who wrote the original Bright, will not be involved with Bright 2. The writer reportedly had creative differences with returning director David Ayer, which lead to the writer parting ways on the sequel. Max Landis was paid a whopping sum for his original Bright script, reportedly between $3 million and $4 million, which was part of a package that Netflix paid $90 million for, beating out...
