Filmmaker Kate Tsang took the top award of a $1 million grant at this year’s At&T Presents: Untold Stories. The program is in collaboration with Tribeca and champions inclusive and diverse filmmaking. The event, which took place earlier this morning in New York City, featured five filmmakers pitched ideas for a film in front of the Untold Stories Greenlight committee made up of industry leaders and film experts. After the committee deliberated, Tsang’s film, Marvelous and the Black Hole came out on top.

Now in its third year, Untold Stories was live-streamed and for the first time in the history of the program, all five finalists were female. In addition to Tsang, the finalists were Aslihan Unaldi (Afloat), Kaliya Warren (Expatriates), Maria Victoria Ponce (Washing Elena) and Ellie Foumbi (Zenith). The four other participants will receive $10,000 each to achieve their film goals.

Exclusive: At&T is about to give us some major Shark Tank vibes with a film twist with their upcoming At&T Presents: Untold Stories pitch event which will livestream on April 22 ahead of the Tribeca Film Festival which kicks off April 24 and continues through May 5.

Now in its third year, At&T partners with the Tribeca Film Institute to champion inclusive filmmaking, choosing five diverse filmmakers to present their story ideas and film scripts to a Greenlight Committee. The winner of Untold Stories gets $1 million prize and Tribeca provides mentorship from seasoned industry professionals for the deserving filmmaker to develop the pitch into a feature-length film. It will also premiere at next year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The other four filmmakers won’t walk away empty handed as At&T will provide a $10,000 grant for their filmmaking goals.

This year, for the first time in the program’s history all five finalists are female.

At the end of Bruce Beresford’s 1981 coming-of-age film “Puberty Blues,” two teenage girls who had been relegated to surfer-groupie status grab their own boards and defiantly charge into the waves. More than 30 years later, young women are still fighting for their corner of extreme sports, and “Skate Kitchen” celebrates female skateboarders who demand their right to grind and pop and kickflip whether the boys like it or not.

The first trailer for Skate Kitchen has arrived. The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year and provides a look at a group of female skaters who live and breath skateboarding. This also brings Jaden Smith back to the big screen in what looks to be a relatively low-profile role. This trailer gives us our first real look at the movie, which looks like it might be the exact opposite of what one might expect when they hear about a skateboarding movie. This looks to be a much more emotional, character driven drama that happens to feature passionate skaters at its center, as opposed to being a hollow showcase for skateboarding tricks.

Magnolia Pictures is doubling down with director Crystal Moselle. After releasing her 2015 Sundance award-winning documentary, The Wolfpack, the company has scooped up the North American distribution rights to her latest Sundance film entry, Skate Kitchen. Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to Sundance Next selection Skate Kitchen, Crystal Moselle’s follow-up to her Sundance 2015 hit The Wolfpack.

The film premiered in Park City last month and paints a boisterous picture of a Long Island teenager whose life changes when she befriends a group of female skateboarders in New York. Magnolia plans a theatrical release this summer.

Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell and Kabrina Adams star alongside Jaden Smith. Moselle wrote the screenplay with Aslihan Unaldi and Jen Silverman.

The Bow and Arrow Entertainment and Rt Features presentation was made in association with Pulse Films and Kotva Films.

Lizzie Nastro, Izabella Tzenkova, Julia Nottingham, Moselle, Matthew Perniciaro, Michael Sherman, and Rodrigo Teixeira produced. Executive producers are Lourenco Sant’Anna and Sophie Mas.

An untitled girl skateboarder feature starring Jaden Smith and Elizabeth Rodriguez and a number of skateboarders from the Skate Kitchen group has wrapped in New York.

Crystal Moselle (pictured), who won the 2015 Sundance documentary grand jury award for The Wolfpack, directs the coming-of-age story about a lonely suburban teenager whose life changes when she befriends a group of girl skateboarders.

The story is inspired by events in the lives of real skateboarders Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, Kabrina Adams, and Jules Lorenzo, all of whom appear in the film. Moselle, Aslihan Unaldi and Jennifer Silverman wrote the screenplay.

Moselle focused on Vinberg, Lovelace, Moran, Russell and Adams – members of the Skate Kitchen – in her short film That One Day (pictured), which debuted in Venice last year.

Bow and Arrow Entertainment and Rt Features are co-financing, and produce in association with Pulse Films.

Documentary filmmaker Crystal Moselle is finally turning her attentions to fiction, care of her first narrative feature, a currently untitled project centering around female skateboarders. The new film will star real New York City skateboarders Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, Kabrina Adams, Jules Lorenzo, alongside actors Jaden Smith and Elizabeth Rodriguez, and is billed as a “raw” coming-of-age tale set in the city’s skating underground.

Vinberg, Lovelace, Moran, Russell, and Adams are members of the Skate Kitchen, a group of female skaters who were the subject of Moselle’s recent short film “That One Day,” which debuted at the 2016 Venice Film Festival. Shabier Kirchner, who served as director of photography on the short, is attached as Dp for the feature.
