If Supernatural Ever Wants to Fix One of Its Biggest Sins, Redeeming Eve Should Be at the Top of the List
Image
Five years have passed since Supernatural ended its 15-season-long run, and there are still so many storylines we wish could’ve been a little different. Starting off with the most obvious – Dean Winchester dying at the hands of a vampire after being impaled on a nail. Honestly, could they have given the main character of the show a more humiliating ending? Then there’s Charlie’s death, Mary’s wasted potential, and so. much. more.

However, the thing that continues to irk me, even as a die-hard member of Team Free Will, is the treatment of Eve. Let’s be honest. Eve was an ancient being who had lived long before angels and demons existed. She had so much potential of being the big bad of the season, yet she was defeated as if she were a common demon in one of the filler episodes. Say it with me: Eve deserved better!

“She shouldn’t have been so easy to kill”: I’ll Never Forgive Eric Kripke for the Worst Kill in Supernatural, Death of Julia Maxwell’s Eve
Image
Eric Kripke chose to bring Eve, the powerful Mother of All, as the primary antagonist of Season Six of Supernatural. Eve was introduced as an extremely dangerous protagonist who could easily defeat the Winchester brothers. I was immediately drawn to the storyline, happy that the series was pitting the Winchesters against probably their biggest challenge of all.

I was so wrong! The Supreme Monster could not rise to her potential because the writing was just plain lazy. While Kripke has been great with his storytelling in other places, he just didn’t care enough to build Eve up to her hype. The result was a below-average villain who fell victim to one of Dean’s cheap-shot tricks.

After being introduced as a threat unlike anything Dean and Sam ever faced in the past five seasons, Eve’s death was just disappointing. Not to mention, Julia Maxwell was capable of taking...

American Mary TV series in the works from directors Jen and Sylvia Soska
Image
Ten years ago, the writing and directing duo of Jen and Sylvia Soska (a.k.a. the Twisted Twins) teamed up with Katharine Isabelle of Ginger Snaps and Freddy vs. Jason to make the body horror film American Mary (pick up a copy Here). To mark the film’s tenth anniversary, the Soskas have created “a variety of American Mary Ten Year Anniversary items for your collection and to celebrate a decade of modification”, which are available for purchase through their Etsy store. But that’s not the only way they’re celebrating. Speaking to a fan on Twitter, the Soskas revealed they are currently developing an American Mary TV series!

The Soskas said, “We are actually adapting American Mary into a tv series. I think you’ll dig the story that picks up where the film left off. Have always wanted to expand Mary’s world for a few...

‘Scarecrow’ DVD Review
Stars: Robin Dunne, Lacey Chabert, Richard Harmon, Brittney Wilson, Nicole Muñoz, Kevin O’Grady, Julia Maxwell, Reilly Dolman, Iain Belcher, Jerry Wasserman, Lanie McAuley | Written by Rick Suvalle | Directed by Sheldon Wilson

I’ll admit I have a soft spot for the scarecrow film. Ever since I was terrified by a TV screening of Dark Night of the Scarecrow back in the 80s, I’ve seen just about every scarecrow-related film going – even those that should probably have never seen the light of day! So of course I Had to see Scarecrow. Even moreso given that it’s (yet another) Canadian genre film and it stars Robin Dunne, an actor whose career I’ve followed ever since I saw him in Cruel Intentions 2 (yes, I liked that film – even more than the original).

The film sees school teacher Aaron Harris (Dunne) doling out punishment to six students serving detention,...

‘American Mary’ Review
Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Julia Maxwell, Antonio Cupo, Paula Lindberg, Twan Holliday | Written and Directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska

Jen and Sylvia Soska should be on the radar of most fans of the horror genre and it’s progression as a genre with something unique and interesting to offer the current earth or cinema. Their previous, and debut, flick was Dead Hooker in a Trunk, which was written and directed by the spooksome twosome, who also appeared in main roles in the flick. It wasn’t anything special as far as I’m concerned but it has a cult following and it did show the capabilities of these two genuinely interesting filmmakers as well as offering a glimpse at what they could do in a shoestring budget and no-name talent.

American Mary came onto my radar when I saw advertisements for it premiering at London’s Frightfest horror weekend and...

Blu-ray Review: American Mary
American Mary

Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Julia Maxwell, Antonio Cupo, Paula Lindberg, Twan Holliday | Written and Directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska

The Soska sisters, Jen and Sylvia (or the Twisted Twins as they liked to be called) made a splash in the horror genre with their 2009 debut feature Dead Hooker in a Trunk, a film which gained them an army of fans – including Eli Roth – eager for their next feature. Well they didn’t have to wait too long as the duo are back with American Mary, their hotly-anticipated follow-up fear flick starring Canadian horror icon Katherine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps), which tells the story of wannabe surgeon Mary Mason.

American Mary is an intensely interesting film, part Frankenstein tale, part rock ‘n’ roll horror flick and at the same time a wonderful feminist statement on the horror genre, the movie plays to many people on many levels. The film follows med student Mary who,...

The American Mary Trailer Hosts Dark Humour and Botched Surgeries
The Soska sisters, Jen and Sylvia (Dead Hooker in a Trunk), are preparing their second feature. Their newest horror film, American Mary, deals with underground surgeries. And, Mary is not someone you would likely hire for a quick nip and tuck. The first trailer shows a few surgeries gone wrong. Apparently, Mary (Katharine Isabelle) has dropped out of medical school. She now experiments on a steady stream of clientele. Her results are disturbingly lackluster. Late in the clip, Dr. Josef Mengele is mentioned. If you missed the joke, that is because Mengele has been dead for thirty years now. Previously, he was a Nazi doctor who performed pseudo-science on twins and other concentration camp prisoners. Enjoy the dark humour below. Directors: Jen Soska, and Sylvia Soska. Writers: Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska. Cast: Katharine Isabelle, Julia Maxwell, Antonio Cupo, Connor Stanhope, Paul Anthony, Paula Lindberg and John Emmet Tracy. The...

Special make-up prosthetics and splatter genius Paul Hyett makes his directorial debut with a harrowing exploration into tense claustrophobia, hard-hitting action and rollercoaster suspense. In a Balkan brothel, where girls kidnapped by soldiers in war-torn zones are prostituted to the military and civilians alike, Angel (Robin Day) is the deaf mute orphan enslaved to care for the inmates. But unbeknownst to her captors, she moves between the walls and crawlspaces of the seasoning house planning her escape. Psychological horror in the nerve-shredding Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski style but with an ultra-modern twist.

Blood and Chrome update, cast news and interviews with Michael Nankin, Meg Tilly and Scott Porter
The weekly round-up (with a few additional bits coming tomorrow):

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talked to Syfy's Mark Stern at the Winter TCA Press Tour and they have an update on Blood and Chrome. Kind of, anyway. Here is what he says (more at the link):

Is the project dead? Read more after the jump. ...

"No not at all," said Syfy original programming president Mark Stern. "We're trying to figure out the economics right now. I love it but we're trying to put various things together to see how we're going to get it made. My hope is we get it figured out." (...)

Stern said the pilot was a good test to prove the technology could be used in series, although he acknowledged it will likely take a year to get the show on air after it's ordered due to the amount of post-production work that will be required on every episode.

[Tiff Review] The Odds
The Toronto International Film Festival media blurb for Simon Davidson’s debut feature, The Odds, likens it to a combination of Rounders and Brick. While this statement is true to a point, the comparisons remain solely on the surface. Poker plays a very small role—as gambling in general looms large—and while the plot concerns teenagers who are way over their heads in adult matters and murder, the hyper-reality of Rian Johnson’s contemporary classic is nowhere to be seen. Such broad generalizations end up doing the film a disservice by trying to pigeonhole it into a set of parameters the target audience will be familiar with. Unfortunately, The Odds can’t live up to those lofty expectations, but that doesn’t mean Davidson hasn’t crafted an entertaining thriller worth a look. Just like its lead character Desson Orr, though, it deserves a chance to stand on its own two feet.

Females haven't fared so well on "Supernatural" since the very beginning, when Sam and Dean's mother met her untimely demise thanks to the yellow-eyed demon, but none has been more beloved than Mary Winchester, who makes a reappearance (sort of) in this week's Episode 19, entitled "Mommy Dearest". Check out the preview and clip below the gallery to give you a taste of what The CW has in store for the fans.

Episode 19 "Mommy Dearest" Synopsis: (4/29/11 Air Date)

Sam And Dean Meet Eve — Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles), Bobby (Jim Beaver), and Castiel (Misha Collins) track Eve (guest star Julia Maxwell) to a small town in Oregon. The guys discover the townspeople have been converted to demons, but surprisingly, they all appear to be dying.

When they finally do meet Eve, she decides to torture the brothers by bringing back their mother, Mary Winchester (guest star Samantha Smith), as a demon.

'Supernatural': Eve meets Sam and Dean -- but what's her endgame?
In Friday's episode of "Supernatural," the Winchester Brothers will finally come face to face with Eve, the Mother of All. Though she's usually played by guest star Julia Maxwell, the villain will take on a different face this time -- she'll look like Mary (Samantha Smith), the boys' long-dead mother.

"It's not really Mary, and Sam and Dean know that. [She thinks] she'll be easier for the boys to talk to this way," executive producer Bob Singer tells Zap2it. "She thinks they can be persuaded because he is her mother."

Luckily, Sam and Dean have had their mother's image used against them before -- Zachariah fully creeped us out when he told them he'd been hooking up with her in Heaven in Season 5.

Eve's motivations remain a bit of a mystery as the season draws to a close. "She's here for a reason. Her kingdom is being messed with. If Crowley's running hell,...

Winchester Mommy Returns in ‘Supernatural’ 6.19, See the Photos
Samantha Smith is back as Mary Winchester on Supernatural. Of all the characters on Supernatural, you have to admit that Mary is one of the strongest if not most key characters on the show. Who can ever forget that scene in the series premiere when Azazel (Fredric Lehne), The Yellow-Eyed Demon, visited the Winchester brothers as children.

Needless to say, the return of Mary does not bode well for Sam (Jared Padalecki) or Dean (Jensen Ackles). Here is a new group of stills provided by CW Network. It looks like we’ll see the entire quartet of Supernatural hunters convene for this family reunion.

The Grim Reaper is hitting Supernatural again.

'Supernatural': Mary and Ellen return, Sam and Dean meet Eve
"Supernatural" fans, we hope you enjoyed the comedic meta episode, "The French Mistake," because there won't be too many laughs for Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) from now until the finale. Last week's episode, "...And Then There Were None" set the tone for the rest of the season. Things are about to get angsty.

When the show returns from its spring hiatus on April 15, some familiar faces are coming back from the dead, and as any demon hunter knows, that's rarely a good sign. Samantha Smith returns as Mary Winchester, Sam and Dean's long-dead mother. The last time we saw her, she was a scary shadow of herself in heaven.

Now, her return is especially troublesome, especially since Sam just shot her father. "What would Mom say?" Sam asked his brother in the last episode. Perhaps we're about to find out. Dean doesn't look too thrilled to see...
