Spanish Animation Woos North American Market at Oiaf’s The Animation Conference
Image
Animation from Spain is attending the Ottawa International Animation Festival’s Tac (The Animation Conference) for the first time this year and has brought with it three of Spain’s hottest up-and-coming animation producers for a roundtable to discuss the current state of Iberian animation and pitch their pipelines to the international and North American markets.

A Spanish government-backed presence at North America’s most important animation festival and the leading indie-dedicated animation event on the global calendar indicates a desire to become a bigger player in Canada and the U.S. while bolstering the country’s global reputation.

International ambitions are being fueled by increased activity in Spain. According to Icex Spain Trade and Investment, the Spanish government body that spearheads this year’s Ottawa involvement, in 2023, Spanish companies produced six animated features, 25 short films and 68 seasons of animated TV series.

Commercial and critically, Spanish animation is also reaching new heights.

Interview: Mathieu Ratthe Talks The Gracefield Incident (Exclusive)
Mathieu Ratthe
Excessively recording and sharing everyday occurrences on social media has become so routine to so many people that it has restricted their intuition of how to react in emergency situations. That’s certainly the case for the main characters in versatile filmmaker Mathieu Ratthe‘s new found-footage horror film, ‘The Gracefield Incident.’ The protagonists have grown so […]

Review: The Gracefield Incident, A Collection of Rehashed Material
"Matthew Donovan (played by Mathieu Ratthe, who's also the film's director) embeds an iPhone camera into his prosthetic eye to secretly record a weekend with friends in a luxurious mountain top cabin”, says the official synopsis for the Canadian/American production The Gracefield Incident. Prosthetic eye plus camera is a silly idea, no doubt, but it’s also one that makes you wonder what the hell you are about to experience. However, Ratthe’s low-budget hybrid soon enters into familiar territory, and even though a lot goes on eventually (marital drama, mystery, horror, sci-fi and so forth), nothing is completely engaging. While the film opens with the genesis of said eye camera notion, and we think it’s going to be a first-person effort, soon it becomes obvious that...

'The Gracefield Incident': Film Review
Mathieu Ratthe
The first line of Mathieu Ratthe’s horror film The Gracefield Incident is uttered by a character who exasperatedly asks, “Do you have to film everything?” and it’s a question with which audiences can only agree. Yes, we’re back in the realm of found-footage, a genre that the director/screenwriter tries to freshen up with a novel concept that proves far sillier than imaginative.

The film begins with a car accident suffered by video game editor — surely the nation’s biggest growing profession — Matthew (Ratthe) and his pregnant wife Jessica (Kimberly Laferriere) which results in her losing the baby and him...

I got a chance to speak to him as the film was released and you can find our conversation below.

Horror Highlights: The Gracefield Incident Q&A, Volumes Of Blood: Horror Stories, Famous Monsters Of Filmland at Comic-Con
In today's Horror Highlights, we have a Q&A with The Gracefield Incident at Mathieu Ratthe, new stills from Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories, and details on Famous Monsters of Filmland's presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Mathieu. How and when did you first come up with the idea for The Gracefield Incident?

Mathieu Ratthe: First of all, thank you, Derek, for your interest in our film. I wanted to create a suspenseful story that scared the crap out of the audience, but also made them emotionally involved, which is really tough to do in this kind of movie, but I think we achieved it pretty well in our film.

The conceptual idea (or I liked to call it the “technique”) came after I realized how many days I was given to shoot our film with the budget that I had.

Pov Found Footage Alien Horror 'The Gracefield Incident' First Trailer
"Some things can't be unseen." Holy crap this looks freaky. An official trailer has debuted for a freaky new alien horror movie titled The Gracefield Incident. This is yet another found footage movie, but the twist is that one guy implants a camera into his eye in order to give us a proper Pov view. He does this to capture footage of a weekend getaway with friends to a cabin in the mountains. But one night a meteor crashes down and things get scary when giant alien creatures start tormenting them. Starring Mathieu Ratthe (who also wrote/directed the film), Kimberly Laferriere, Victor Andres Turgeon-Trelles, Juliette Gosselin, Alexandre Nachi, and Laurence Dauphinais. Aliens seriously freak me out, and this looks totally nuts. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Mathieu Ratthe's The Gracefield Incident, from YouTube: The Gracefield Incident tells the story of Matthew Donovan, a video game editor,...

The Gracefield Incident Finally Declassified
There are so many things that our government, hell, all governments, never tell us. Are aliens real? What was the identity of the third shooter on the grassy knoll? Is my Xbox One's Kinect watching me as I twerk to the Halo soundtrack? We may never know. In any event...

Below you'll find the first trailer and artwork for The Gracefield Incident which was written, produced, edited, and directed by Mathieu Ratthe who also stars. "After 24 months in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada, living in my parents basement, (where my Dad and I built a studio especially for this), I got it done," Ratthe tells us. "The Executives Producers on the film are Bryan Turner, "Priority Records Founder", Pat Brisson, "Head of Hockey at CAA" and Sergei Fedorov, "Ex-NHLer and Future Hall of Famer". They believed in me and without their support, none of this would've been possible."
