Firefighter Documentary ‘Black Sunday’ In The Works From Eric Hosmer, Luke Wheatley & Shane Abbess
Image
Exclusive: Twenty years ago, the Fdny (New York Fire Department) suffered one of the darkest days in its history with multiple deaths across different incidents. It was known as Black Sunday.

This tragedy is being commemorated with a new feature documentary from former MLB star Eric Hosmer, Australian filmmaker Shane Abbess (The Beast in Me) and director Luke Wheatley (Grounded).

It also comes as firefighters have played a central, and inspiring role, in the wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles over the last two weeks.

Black Sunday tells the story of a group of New York City firefighters who faced one of the most devastating events for the Fdny since September 11. It recounts the impact of the day, which saw three firefighters die in two fires, one a tenement fire in the Bronx and one at a house fire in Brooklyn. It marked the first time that firefighters had died...

Producers-led Australian distributor enters the market with ‘Two Heads Creek’
Jordan Waller in ‘Two Heads Creek.’

Producers Brett Thornquest, Steven Matusko and Mat Graham have launched Entertainment Advocate, an Australian distribution company with the aim of handling a limited number of Oz, Us and UK titles each year.

The banner’s debut release, Two Heads Creek, a macabre, irreverent horror comedy directed by Jesse O’Brien, opened last weekend after premiering at Monster Fest.

While the weekend gross was a modest $14,000 including festival screenings, Matusko, who is partnered with Thornquest in Eclectik Vision, tells If: “We understand the business and will approach distribution with a producer’s mindset rather than a distributor’s.

“We are not looking to outbid larger distribution companies but we want to work with other Australian producers and also to release select films from the UK and Us.”

Graham was one of the producers on Eclectik Vision’s Infini and The Osiris Child, both directed by Shane Abbess.

Tess Haubrich finds the good in Nine’s female-driven ‘Bad Mothers’
Tess Haubrich in ‘Bad Mothers’.

Tess Haubrich jumped at the chance to play a key role in Bad Mothers at very short notice after Jessica Marais was forced to withdraw for health reasons – not least because she had never worked with female directors.

Sian Davies, Catriona McKenzie and Geoff Bennett directed the Nine Network’s ensemble comedy-drama from Jungle Entertainment and Filthy Productions.

“It’s quite shocking that I had never worked on shows with female directors, except on short films,” says Haubrich, whose credits include Pine Gap, Wolf Creek 2, Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, the Jackie Chan starrer Bleeding Steel and the Turner-Roache brothers Nekrotronic.

The Sydney-based actress was told one Friday night that she had won the role of Sarah in Bad Mothers and on the following Monday morning was in Melbourne for the start of two weeks pre-production.

However, she wasn’t there for the full two...

Interview: Kellan Lutz on Reteaming with Kelsey Grammer on the Spider-Centric Set of 7 Guardians Of The Tomb
You may know him as Hercules, Emmett Cullen, or even Tarzan, but recently actor Kellan Lutz has been bringing other memorable characters to life in a string of intriguingly imaginative movies. After playing Sy Lombrok in the ambitious sci-fi film The Osiris Child, Lutz channels his inner Indiana Jones for the spider-centric 7 Guardians of the Tomb. With the adventure horror movie out now in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD platforms via Gravitas Ventures, we recently caught up with Lutz to discuss reteaming with Kelsey Grammer after working together on The Expendables 3, experiencing spider pranks on set, and his dislike of cockroaches.

Like your character in 7 Guardians of the Tomb, I'm not exactly fond of spiders, so I could relate to a lot in this movie. I found it intriguing that you were playing this Indiana Jones-type character with a haunted past. When you first got the script,...

The Osiris Child – Review
Review by Cary Paller

Here is the perfect example of what Hollywood excels in and what they lack. When The Osiris Child first started all I could think of underachieving Sci-Fi films like “The Last Starfighter” and “Enemy Mine“. It felt underdeveloped and sort of like a TV movie. But, as the story began to move forward I started to become engaged in the characters, locations and SFX.

Writer/Director Shane Abbess and Co-Writer Brian Cachia crafted a similar yet fresh approach to the futuristic Earth on it’s last leg plot. At first I did feel like I was for a cheap TV movie knock off. What do I mean by that? A low budget film shot with limited quality SFX that was going to edit like they did not have a line dialog in mind. But, to my surprise the film grew on me more and more with each act.

Interview: Kellan Lutz on Playing the Intriguing Sy Lombrok in The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One
Sy Lombrok (Kellan Lutz) is an escaped convict, Kane Sommerville (Daniel MacPherson) is an alcoholic lieutenant. They don't really get along, but they both have only hours to get off the planet before it's obliterated in the new sci-fi action film The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One. An ambitious sci-fi story that retains an epic scope without losing sight of its character-centric sensibilities, The Osiris Child is now out on VOD and Digital HD from Rlj Entertainment, and Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with actor Kellan Lutz about his intriguing role, working with director Shane Abbess, visiting a real prison to prepare to play his character, and much more.

How did this movie come onto your radar, and what attracted you to the character of Sy Lombrok? He is a really intriguing character.

Director Shane Abbess on the Nostalgic and Collaborative Framework Behind ‘The Osiris Child’
It’s been almost one full year since Shane Abbess’ Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child made its world premiere at Fantastic Fest late September 2016. We recently caught up with Shane to talk about his film. We discussed everything from production design to music to the economy of the film, notably the team’s efforts getting shots both done in budget in a timely manner. However, aside from a handful of scenes, you’d expect that he had the luxury of resources to build this fascinating world.

Culled from favorite childhood experiences/films, cherry-picked tropes from specific genres, and aimed at giving the audience things they’ve never seen before , the result of Abbess’ work is one of the most impressive sci-fi films this year. A long time coming for those of you who missed it on the festival circuit, but the ambitious sci-if gem that is The Osiris Child...

Cool New Trailer for the Sci-Fi Action Thriller The Osiris Child
A new trailer has been released for the upcoming sci-fi action film, The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One. I'm not really sure about that weird subtitle, but the movie looks pretty good! I'm a sucker for sci-fi, though, even the low budget sci-fi stuff like this. There are some pretty cool visuals to check out in the trailer!

The movie was shot in Australia and the cast includes Kellan Lutz, Isabel Lucas, Daniel MacPherson, Luke Ford, and Teagan Croft. Here's the synopsis:

Set in the future in a time of interplanetary colonisation, Sy (Lutz), a mysterious drifter, meets Kane (MacPherson), a lieutenant working for an off-world military contractor, Exor. The unlikely pair must work together to rescue Kane’s young daughter (Croft) and reach safety amid an impending global crisis which was brought on by Exor itself. Teaming up with a pair of renegades (Ford and Lucas), Kane...

New Us Trailer for Sci-Fi Epic 'Osiris Child' Directed by Shane Abbess
"This is going to be fun." Rlj Entertainment has unleashed another new full-length trailer for an under-the-radar sci-fi epic titled The Osiris Child, or rather, The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One in full. You may remember hearing about this, as we posted an international trailer earlier in the year. It's not getting a Us release in the fall. Set in the future in a time of interplanetary colonization, the story is about a drifter, played by Kellan Lutz, who gets mixed up with a lieutenant named Kane who works for a military contractor. They form an alliance and head out to rescue Kane's daughter amid an impending global crisis. Also stars Daniel MacPherson, Isabel Lucas, Rachel Griffiths, and Teagan Croft. This seems crazy ambitious with impressive VFX for an indie production, I just hope it isn't a complete disaster. Take a look. The second trailer for Shane Abbess...

Exclusive: ‘The Osiris Child’ Trailer Teases an Old School Sci-Fi Epic
I'm always here for a good sci-fi B-movie, but in the age of superheroes, Star Wars, and blockbuster dominance, there hasn't been a lot of room at the studios for that kind of fare lately. Thankfully, The Osiris Child is finally landing in theaters and it looks like filmmaker Shane Abbess (Infiniti) has captured the fun spirit of a good fashioned sci-fi romp. Set in the age of interplanetary colonization, including a none-too-welcoming prison planet, The Osiris Child stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight) and Daniel MacPherson (The Shannara Chronicles) as an unlikely pair of …...

First Trailer for 'The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One' Movie
An intriguing trailer has launched for a new sci-fi movie series titled The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One (or, vice versa, as Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child) from Australian filmmaker Shane Abbess. Described as an "adrenaline-fueled sci fi adventure", the story takes place in the future in a time of interplanetary colonization, about a father who has to rescue a young woman amidst a global crisis. The full cast includes Kellan Lutz, Daniel MacPherson, Isabel Lucas, Luke Ford, Rachel Griffiths, Temuera Morrison, Bren Foster, Dwaine Stevenson, and Teagan Croft. As much as I was expecting this to look cheesy or too low budget, it actually looks pretty damn good, with some impressive visual effects and an interesting story. I don't know if the movie is any good, but I'm very curious about checking this out. Here's the first trailer for Shane Abbess' Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child,...

The Countdown Has Begun in First Trailer for ‘Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child’
While Luc Besson is delivering some B-movie sci-fi spectacle on a massive scale this summer, the days of scrappy films in the same genre are few and far between. Enter Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child, the third feature from writer-director Shane Abbess, which is set in a future of interplanetary colonization and follows a father (Daniel MacPherson) searching for his daughter and a convict (Kellan Lutz) who decides to help him.

We said in our review from Fantastic Fest, “The true strength with this blast of a film is that everything is so unexpected. What starts to come across as uninspired SyFy fare quickly does a 180-degree turn and shows us that Abbess and team have something to say, and more importantly, show. From narration to flashbacks to chapter breaks, Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child just gives and gives, and when it ends — brilliantly, by the...

Shane Abbess is Back with The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One [Trailer]
Shane Abbess is back with a pulpy new space opera called The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume 1. Rochefort loved the film out of Fantastic Fest last year and the first trailer looks like a ton of fun.

You got to hand it to Abbess. He knows how to make a great looking product on a low budget.

Synopsis:

The Osiris Child: Full Trailer Arrives For Shane Abbess' Old School Sci-Fi Spectacle
There's an obvious love for old school pulp serials on display in Shane Abbess' scifi spectacle The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One. The title itself is a deliberate nod to old dime store adventure novels and that anything goes aesthetic is very much on display in the way Abbess fuses new school VFX with old school practical creature effects. Set in the future in a time of interplanetary colonisation, Sy (Kellan Lutz), a mysterious drifter, meets Kane (Daniel MacPherson), a lieutenant working for an off-world military contractor, Exor. The unlikely pair must work together to rescue Kane’s young daughter (Teagan Croft) and reach safety amid an impending global crisis which was brought on by Exor itself. Teaming up with a pair of renegades (Luke...

Newswire: There will be a Dark Crystal sequel after all, but only as a comic book
For years—if not decades—various movie industry people have tried to get a sequel to Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s The Dark Crystal off the ground, with one would-be director explaining last year that he walked off of the project due to the producers’ apparent lack of respect for Henson’s ideas. That director, Shane Abbess, explained that Henson had composed handwritten notes laying out what a sequel would be about, but nobody other than him actually seemed interested in paying attention to what those notes said.

Now, that sequel is finally happening, but it won’t be a movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Boom! Studios has announced a 12-part comic book series called The Power Of The Dark Crystal that will serve as a direct follow-up to the events of the original film. On top of that, the THR story says it’s based on an...

Fantastic Fest 2016: Science Fiction, Vol. 1 The Osiris Child Review
If you ask a modern filmmaker to name some of the inspirations for their latest science fiction opus, chances are high he or she won't mention the likes of Circuitry Man, Space Truckers, Slipstream, or Fortress. Chances are also high that if you have any affinity whatsoever for 80's and 90's sci-fi B-movies you will, while watching the latest film from director Shane Abbess, flash back to at least one of these or a host of other hovering-just-below-the-radar flicks, the kind that once dominated the shelves of rental stores.

Science Fiction Vol.1: The Osiris Child takes place in a future where mankind has begun colonizing the galaxy, establishing corporate/military bases on each newly terraformed planet. Lt. Kane Sommerville (Daniel MacPherson), demot [Continued ...]...

[Fantastic Fest Review] Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child
Seemingly from outer space (Australia, really) comes Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child. This lost ’80s era space opera is a fresh of breath air that comes at a time when ones doesn’t see this kind of film too often. Furthermore, it’s not of the post-apocalyptic variety, which also adds a refreshing angle. What starts as a slow build, Shane Abbess‘ ambitious sci-fi gem quickly picks up speed and never looks back.

Abbess’ feature has many strengths, and right out of the gates the visuals simply sing with a slick and refined production design. Abbess and co-writer Brian Cachia succeed at impressive world building, and, like the music (also from Cachia), it’s big. This story about a government conglomerate, EXOr, colonizing planets is kicked off when one of their secret facilities is in danger of wiping out an entire planet in 24 hours (which include colonists, and...

Fantastic Fest 2016: First Look at Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child
Australia's Shane Abbess is back with another ambitious science fiction project and we have our first look thanks to a bevy of images accompanying the film's Fantastic Fest 2016 announcement.  Set in the future, in a time of interplanetary colonization, Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child follows an unlikely pair who must race against an impending global crisis. Previously titled the much simpler "SV1", does the film's renaming hint at further ambitions? Does the new title suggest this is just the first of many films set in Abbess' new universe? Are there plans for a volume two in the future? Or, is the title simply meant to evoke pulpy space opera of a bygone era?  Abbess' previous films include the made-for-a-buck, fallen angel flick...
