Alice In Terrorland: I Knew Alice In Wonderland Was Meant To Be A Horror Movie, And This Proves Me Right
Image
Alice in Terrorland uncovers a dark, unsettling take on Lewis Carroll's classic story beyond Disney's adaptations. The horror elements of Carroll's characters in the film stay close to the source material, creating a chilling effect. The movie stands out in examining the true frights within children's stories - a trend we'd like more of in the future.

Welcome to Alice in Terrorland, how Lewis Carroll originally envisioned his classic children's novel Alice in Wonderland before scandalized readers forced him to rein in the more grotesque moments. Maybe. Probably not. But Alice in Terrorland was made all the same, never mind what Carroll, Walt Disney, or even Tim Burton may think. I've seen (or Wikipedia'd) many adaptations of Carroll's famous novels, and I've never seen any quite like Alice in Terrorland, directed by Richard John Taylor.

Alice in Terrorland, released in 2023, finds Alice (Lizzy Willis) arriving at her...

‘Alice in Terrorland’ Review – ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Horror Movie Isn’t Great But It’s Better Than Expected
Image
Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” isn’t new to the “turn something innocent into a horror movie” fad. Brave gamers might remember diving into the twisted mind of American McGee’s Alice, or indie film diehards could have caught 2010’s Alice in Murderland. Writer and director Richard John Taylor explores forbidden but charted territory with his fresh psychological thriller Alice in Terrorland, which can’t help but earn comparisons to other horror forward Wonderland adaptations. Luckily for Taylor’s cerebrally nasty and visually slick reimagining, the average lookalike doesn’t set a high bar to clear — hardly spectacular, but damn sure better than something like Alice in Murderland.

Lizzy Willis stars as little orphan Alice (named after Carroll’s book), the only survivor of a house fire that claimed her parents’ lives. Alice relocates to her grandmother’s sprawling yet dilapidated estate, where Ruth (Rula Lenska) assumes caretaking duties.

‘Alice in Terrorland’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Lizzie Willis, Rula Lenska, Steve Wraith, Jon-Paul Gates, Nigel Troup, Rikki Kimpton, Lila Sarner, Nikol Atanasova | Written and Directed by Richard John Taylor

Considering he has already released three films in 2023, writer/director Richard John Taylor continues his busy streak with this take on Alice In Wonderland. His latest work, Alice in Terrorland, opens on a house engulfed in fire while a terrified girl cowers in the corner. As the tragedy leaves Alice (Lizzie Willis) orphaned, she is sent to live with her estranged grandmother, Beth (Rula Lenska).

Arriving at their spacious family home, Alice is awestruck by the old building that is named Wonderland after Lewis Carroll’s iconic book. Beth shares a warning to stay out of the woods, although this does not stop her granddaughter from being terrorized by mysterious figures or disappearing down a horrific rabbit hole.

What kept Beth apart from her family for so long?...

‘The Huntress of Auschwitz’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Lowri Watts-Joyce, Rula Lenska, Noel Brendan Mcalley, Jeffrey Charles Richards | Written and Directed by Richard John Taylor

The Huntress of Auschwitz begins with a young woman identified only as The Huntress (Lowri Watts-Joyce) meeting with Amelia Kaminska (Rula Lenska) and saying that she’s found “Him” before producing an old photo of a man in a World War 2 German uniform. Then we get a long montage accompanied by a hideous acoustic song of her flying from Los Angeles to London.

That’s when the alarms started going off in my head. Writer/director Richard John Taylor put an almost identical sequence in his film The Haunting of Pendle Hill which also starred Lowri Watts-Joyce. Recycling footage from that talkfest was not a good sign.

She takes a room at a less than welcoming inn where she meets John (Noel Brendan Mcalley) who asks her why she’s come to this remote in.

‘The Haunting of Pendle Hill’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Lowri Watts-Joyce, Noel McAlley, Jeffrey Charles Richards, Mark Topping, Jimmy ‘The Bee’ Bennett, James Hamer-Morton, Nicolas Ball | Written and Directed by Richard John Taylor

Having grown up in the shadow of Pendle Hill, there’s no way I could not check out a horror film set in the very area we learnt about in school, did plays about as kids, and walked up as adults. The story of the Pendle Witches was a subject that was, when I was in junior school, drummed into children alongside stories about the village of Eyam (I don’t know why schools in the area were so obsessed with the plague town some 2 hours dove away), the fairies of Burnley and the lost villages of Singleton Thorpe and Kilgrimol.

But it’s the Pendle witches which are the most [in]famous of the local “legends”, so it’s surprising that – given British horror has...

On the trail of a con man
Richard John Taylor had no problem attracting investors to his films. After all, he was a senior editor on EastEnders, ran a production company with Louis Theroux and had a lucrative deal with ITV. There was only one problem…

At the end of Tina Renton's book, You Can't Hide, she thanks her friend Richard John Taylor for everything he's done for her. Taylor, a film-maker, had become a saviour of sorts. He had met her through Rape Crisis in August 2011 when she was at her most vulnerable, befriended her, gave her a job as his personal assistant and made her feel worthwhile again.

Renton's story was as inspirational as it was shocking. She had been abused by her stepfather from the age of six. At 14, she told her mother, but her mother said if she went to the police, the family would be left homeless. She threw her partner out of the house,...
