Sam Rubin Wins Posthumous Honor as L.A. Area Emmy Awards Are Announced
Image
Longtime Ktla entertainment anchor Sam Rubin, who died earlier this year, received the 76th Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award on Saturday night, given posthumously to recognize his “legacy of more than three decades of entertainment news reporting for Ktla.”

Rubin also won an Emmy in the entertainment news category, for his “Ktla Morning News” coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike last year.

Overall, pubcaster Kcet (which now calls itself “PBS SoCal Plus”) dominated with ten wins, including in categories such as culture/history (“Legacy 10 Days In Watts”), L.A. local color (“Angel City Press: L.A. Through the Pages — Artbound”), independent programming (“Everybody Dance”), crime/social issues (“Bonnie Boswell Presents: Saving Moms”) and more.

The main newscast awards at the 76th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards were split. Unlike last year, when Kvea won all three, this year the prizes were mixed. Spectrum News 1’s “Your Morning on...

Kcet, Spectrum News 1 Lead 2024 Los Angeles Area Emmy Nominations, as Sam Rubin Gets Posthumous Nod
Image
Public broadcaster Kcet is once again the leader in Los Angeles Area Emmys nominations, landing 22 this year (down slightly from last year’s 24), thanks to expecially to the locally produced series “Artbound” and its “10 Days in Watts.” Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1 was in second, with 17 — up from 14 last year.

Meanwhile, Kabc-tv — aka ABC7 — saw a nice surge to 14 noms, up from 7 last year and good enough to top the commercial broadcast outlets. Nominees included the late Sam Rubin, who was nominated in the entertainment news story for his coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike on Ktla.

As usual, all stations that enter are immediately nominated in the daily morning newscast (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), daily daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and daily evening newscast (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.) categories.

Last year, Telemundo outlet Kvea swept the newscast categories, winning the Emmys for evening (7 p.m.

Telemundo’s Kvea Sweeps All Three Newscast Categories at This Year’s L.A. Area Emmys
Image
Kvea is clearly doing something right. The Telemundo-owned Los Angeles station, part of a duopoly with sister NBC outlet Knbc, swept this year’s key newscast categories at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. The Spanish language station dominated the evening, winning the Emmys for evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.), daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.) newscasts.

Kvea had won the daytime newscast Emmy last year as well.

Overall, Kvea earned eight L.A. Area Emmy awards this year, tied with local public broadcaster Kcet. (That was also up from Kcet’s haul of six last year.) Given the tie with Kvea, that still preserves Kcet’s streak of this being the seventh year in a row that Kcet won the most.

The Kcbs/Kcal duopoly was next in line, with four wins, while ABC-owned Kabc and cabler Spectrum SportsNet LA were next with three.

Local Public Broadcaster Kcet and Telemundo’s Kvea Lead 2023 Los Angeles Area Emmy Nominations
Image
Public broadcaster Kcet — part of a PBS duopoly with Koce “PBS SoCal” — is back on top at the Los Angeles Area Emmys. Thanks to locally produced series like “Artbound” and “Broken Bread,” Kcet dominated the L.A. area Emmy nominations, announced Tuesday, with 24.

That’s a return to the top spot among nominees, and up from 15 last year. Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1, which dominated last year’s Emmy nominations, was down to 14 this year (vs. 23 in 2022) — still good enough for third place.

Meanwhile, Telemundo outlet Kvea (part of a duopoly with NBC-owned Knbc) saw a huge surge as well, with 20 nominations — up from just 8 last year. That meant Kvea was not only tops with Spanish outlets, but it was also tops with all commercial broadcasters. That includes its sibling NBC4, just posted just two nominations.

As usual, all stations that enter are immediately nominated in the daily morning newscast (4 a.

Spectrum News 1 Takes Over as Most-Nominated Local Station for 2022 Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards
Image
Local cable news upstart Spectrum News 1 has taken the crown for the first time ever in Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards nominations. The outlet, which just launched in 2018, pulled 23 nominations this year, up from 19 last year. That puts it head of public broadcaster Kcet, which was in second with 15 nominations (down from 23 last year).

The Television Academy announced this year’s L.A. area Emmy noms on Tuesday. Among commercial broadcasters, Disney-owned Kabc-tv was tops with 14 noms (up from 12 nods), then Fox-owned Kttv with 11.

There was a sharp decline in Spanish-language nominees for some reason this year. TelevisaUnivision’s Kmex and Telemundo’s Keva tied at 8 each — way down from last year’s 21 for Kvea and 16 for Kmex.

As usual, all stations that enter are immediately nominated in the daily morning newscast (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), daily daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and daily evening newscast (7 p.
