Taika Waititi has had a hand in many great TV shows, but one of his most underrated, Wellington Paranormal, will only be available to watch for a little while longer. Known for his tongue-in-cheek humor and for helping to develop iconic projects like Reservation Dogs, Waititi is a fan-favorite filmmaker and comedian for a reason.
All of Taika Waititi's movies offer something unique to their stories, typically set apart because of the distinct style of comedy that's a little offbeat, but works for his stories. Wellington Paranormal was quickly heralded as a success by fans and critics alike, making it worth checking out for audiences who enjoy Waititi's other work, as it also features mockumentary-style filmmaking.

When What We Do in the Shadows hit theaters in the U.S. back in 2015, it became an immediate hit. Created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the mockumentary brought something fresh to an otherwise stagnant subgenre, and is today regarded as one of the best horror comedies ever made. The spin-off series of the same name that hit FX in 2019 enjoyed similar, if not greater success, but in between the two, there was another short-lived spin-off you may have either missed, or forgotten about completely: Wellington Paranormal.
Starring Mike Minogue and Karen O'Leary as Officers Minogue and O'Leary from the feature film, Wellington Paranormal traces a group of New Zealand police investigators who track supernatural events, including cases of demon possession, haunted houses, and blood bank robberies. Lasting for four seasons and a Christmas special, the series maintains the mockumentary format as it introduces viewers to a new crop of hilarious threats,...

Movie characters often wear absurd and humorous costumes to attend parties, and in some cases these looks can become more iconic than their everyday clothes. Not all movies can pull off a funny costume, since the jokes have to work in-universe and on-screen. This strips away the layer of ironic detachment that many comedies use, in which the characters don't know that what they're doing is funny.
Funny movie costumes mostly show up in comedies, since there aren't many dramas which can spend time on a joke or a costume party. However, it's often the case that these are exactly the types of movies which provide the best opportunities for a funny costume, because audiences aren't expecting it, so it has even more of an impact. Some surprisingly emotional dramas have had funny character costumes just like comedies.

In 1981, as the Monty Python sketch comedy troupe approached the end of its most fertile period, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin co-wrote the feature film Time Bandits, which Gilliam also directed. Though Monty Python’s Flying Circus and some segments of their various movies would be entertaining to kids and adults alike, Time Bandits was pitched at a younger audience and, according to an essay by Bruce Eder at Criterion.com, became “the most critically well-received children’s film in nearly two decades.”
For some Gen Xers who saw it as children, Time Bandits was a formative event: a fantasy story that didn’t hold back on physical or emotional violence, and (spoilers ahead for a 40+-year-old movie) had no compunction about giving the young protagonist’s terrible parents an unambiguously punitive ending.
Now Time Bandits is getting a revival in streaming TV series form. I can’t speak to how 2024 kids will receive it,...

What We Do In The Shadows will end with its upcoming season 6, it’s been announced: more on the news here.
What We Do In The Shadows began life as a feature film in 2014, written and directed by Flight Of The Concords star Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The latter of those two has gone on to direct Jojo Rabbit and has become a creative force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, infusing the franchise with his signature humorous approach (even if he took the job to keep food on the table.)
What We Do In The Shadows inspired two television series. The first was Wellington Paranormal, which began in 2016 and followed police officers Minogue and O’Leary, played by Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary respectively, who were minor characters in the film. It ran for four seasons from 2018 to 2022.

This Wellington Paranormal article contains no spoilers.
Wellington Paranormal does for cops what What We Do In the Shadows does for vampires: not really much. People didn’t offer their throats to Staten Island bloodsuckers, asking to be made immortal after the FX series, and there won’t be a run on the New Zealand police academy any time soon, even after any cadets learn there is a paranormal unit in some of the local precincts. Hardly any law officer has even visited the basement office of the paranormal unit at the Wellington station. It’s not because it’s such a tightly guarded secret. They just have no interest. The series brilliantly lampoons the entire force in farce.
The cops at the center of Wellington Paranormal are the most normal paranormal investigators ever assigned to cover “extraterresticle” activity. They treat supernatural law enforcement like it’s the most natural thing imaginable.

There are plenty of other reasons to watch, but the opening credits for “Wellington Paranormal” distill the show’s appeal down to its essence. The credits introduce the three central figures in this survey of mysterious happenings in and around New Zealand’s capital. There’s a pair of police officers — O’Leary (Karen O’Leary) and her partner Minogue (Mike Minogue) — and the officer they both report to, Sergeant Maaka (Maaka Pohatu).
Behind these character introductions is a synthy, self-aware theme tune that wouldn’t be out of place in a “news of the weird” local cable access roundup, or even a basic cable reality show about cryptids disguised as an investigative documentary. Fake news clippings flash across the screen, one of them with a headline including the word “Vampirey.” It’s unrepentantly goofy, with just enough of that mockumentary veneer to keep the show nominally hemmed in to a recognizable format.

FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows” is a master class in extending a slight premise boundlessly outward. That series, based on Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s film, imagines a comic universe in which ancient vampires make their way through humdrum lives stripped of Transylvanian glamour in modern New York City. There’s real comic potential, all taking place within a clearly defined reality.
By contrast, “Wellington Paranormal,” a series executive produced by Clement and Waititi, plays according to a relatively elastic set of rules. Its central two cops — played by Karen O’Leary and Mike Minogue, of the “What We Do in the Shadows” film — face down threats in New Zealand’s capital from across the spectrum of the supernatural, from zombies to aliens. Its diffuse sense of infinite possibility, though, exposes a certain simplicity in the show’s writing: “Wellington Paranormal” is both a show on which...

For an upcoming feature story tied to September’s third season premiere of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, I spoke with the cast and creative team of the vampire comedy about what’s made it the funniest show on TV. In one of those conversations, star Matt Berry noted that the show is a convergence of three different comic sensibilities: New Zealand, courtesy of creator Jemaine Clement; the U.K., courtesy of him and co-stars Natasia Demetriou and Kayvan Novak; and the United States, courtesy of the show’s other writers,...

It used to be that horror was considered a genre explicitly and unapologetically for nerds who live for things that go bump in the night — the freaks who get off on jump scares or the low-key scaredy-cats who push themselves to the edge. But with the popularization of horror in recent years has come a shift toward making it as accessible for everyone as possible. Meaning, even if you’re not exactly into horror, maybe you’ll like it with gnarly humor at the forefront. That’s where The CW’s new “Wellington Paranormal” sits.
Co-creators Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s horror comedy, part of a subgenre that has risen in recent years much to the frustration of horror purists, first aired in New Zealand for three years beginning in 2018 before The CW acquired it in partnership with HBO Max. In the first co-acquisition partnership between The CW and HBO Max, the broadcaster and streamer have acquired Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s “Wellington Paranormal,” a spinoff from their 2014 movie “What We Do in the Shadows.” The horror comedy will premiere on The CW sometime this summer, and episodes will then be available the next day to stream on HBO Max (as well as on the ad-supported CW app and Cwtv.com).
The show follows the police characters from “What We Do in the Shadows,” Officers O’Leary (played by Karen O’Leary) and Minogue (played by Mike Minogue). As part of the Wellington paranormal unit, they investigate local supernatural activity — of which there is a surprising amount — as supervised by Sergeant Maaka (Maaka Pohatu).

Accomplishing the rare feat of proving both the vampire genre and the mockumentary style is alive and well, we recently named Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement‘s What We Do in the Shadows one of the best comedies of the decade. While there’s been much talk that they are planning to return to the world with a sequel brilliantly titled We’re Wolves, considering that one-half of the duo is booked up for the near future directing Marvel’s Thor: Ragnorak, we thought it many be many years before we revisit any of these characters. Thankfully, it looks like it’ll be much sooner.

Throughout his short and blistering career, Taika Waititi has served up quirky indie romance in Eagle Vs. Shark and cast blinding light on a house filled with vampires in the really rather excellent horror comedy, What We Do In The Shadows.
It’s enough to give ardent Marvelites a tease of what’s to come, too, considering that the New Zealand filmmaker is set to helm next year’s Thor: Raganrok. Set for a U.S. release in June, the film features an unlikely pair (Sam Neill and newcomer Julian Dennison) as they’re on the run from the government following a misunderstanding. Today we now have a thrilling new trailer for the adventure comedy, one of our summer must-sees.
We said in our review, “If one imagines a real-life version of Up with a bit of Thelma & Louise thrown in, they get Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Taika Waititi‘s charming on-the-run adventure comedy. Based on Barry Crump’s book “Wild Pork And Watercress,” the story follows Ricky (Julian Dennison) as a rambunctious foster child on his last straw before juvenile prison. An expert in stealing, graffiti, kicking things,...
