Ross Ulbricht, Pardoned Silk Road Founder, to Speak Out in Surprise Documentary (Exclusive)
Image
After more than a decade of inspiring feature films, documentaries, books and podcasts, Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht will tell his story in an upcoming documentary he participated in from prison.

The project arrives as Ulbricht enjoys an improbable Hollywood ending. He was freed from federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, on Tuesday after receiving a pardon from President Donald Trump, a pledge Trump made in May at the Libertarian National Convention.

Ulbricht was sentenced to two life sentences, plus 40 years, after creating the illegal online drug market Silk Road, which was described as “the Amazon for Drugs.” According to the FBI, the site generated hundreds of millions in sales and made Ulbricht the subject of a dramatic manhunt, culminating in his arrest at a San Francisco library in 2013.

Despite the intense interest in his case, Ulbricht granted no interviews to the press following his 2015 conviction (he did send in a...

Leonardo DiCaprio producing a documentary on The Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling
Image
For about a decade, Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to produce a big screen reboot of the classic genre property The Twilight Zone through his company Appian Way. Multiple drafts of the script were written and Joseph Kosinski was set to direct the film… but it never made it into production. The Twilight Zone got a small screen reboot from producer Jordan Peele and his company Monkeypaw Productions instead. But DiCaprio isn’t leaving the Twilight Zone behind entirely, as IndieWire reports that he is now producing a documentary about the show’s creator, Rod Serling!

Appian Way is teaming up with Goodlight, Grub Street Films, and Verdi Productions to make this documentary happen. DiCaprio is producing alongside Chad A. Verdi, Jennifer Davisson, Phillip Watson, Taylor Digilio, Blake J. Harris, Michelle Verdi, Chad Verdi Jr., Paul Luba, and Jonah Tulis. Tulis, who previously directed GameStop: Rise of the Players and Console Wars,...

Leonardo DiCaprio at an event for Inception (2010)
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way is set to produce an authorized biographical documentary on the life of “The Twilight Zone“ creator Rod Serling, we’ve learned today from Indiewire.

The Serling doc, currently untitled, will be directed by GameStop: Rise of the Players filmmaker Jonah Tulis. Indiewire also reports that Serling’s daughters, Jodi Serling and Anne Serling, have given the project their full blessing and come aboard as executive producers.

The documentary will “explore how Serling’s writing helped change television forever. The film will look at Serling’s humble beginnings in television and how he later used his platform to affect change both on and off the screen, including his battles with censors and how he grappled with thought-provoking issues of racism, war, the dangers of technology, and morality via the genre-bending, sci-fi parables.”

Serling had a way with words, and the documentary is expected to lean into...

‘GameStop: Rise Of The Players’ Brings The Meme Stock Era To Theaters – Specialty Preview
Image
GameStop: Rise of the Players, Adrien Brody passion project Clean, Cannes winner Compartment No. 9, Danish upscale restaurant drama A Taste of Hunger, Michel Franco’s Sundown and Woody Allen’s latest Rifkin’s Festival hit theatres crowded by Oscar contenders in a specialty market consumed by awards season (and as a major storm looks set to pummel the Northeast).

There’s more new content than the market has seen in many weeks, although these can be hard frames for indie distributors to find available screens. But it’s easier now than it will be after Feb. 8 and a crush of actual Oscar nominees, said one distribution executive. “We’re going in,...

GameStop: Rise Of The Players' Jonah Tulis And Blake Harris Talk About Taking On Hedge Funds With The Power Of Friendship [Interview]
Blake J. Harris and Jonah Tulis in Console Wars (2020)
In 2021, retail investors pulled off something that was considered impossible: They challenged hedge funds over the value of a struggling stock and won -- big time. When a hedge fund targeted GameStop for short selling, a ragtag group of investors (following the lead of a small band of steadfast stock advocates) rallied behind the stock, gaining collective millions against billions in losses from the financial powers that be. In the new documentary "GameStop: Rise of the Players," the team behind "Console Wars" tells the story of this exercise in retail investor revenge. It's...

Steve Jobs
Make It GameStop! All the Competing Film and TV Projects in the Works About the WallStreetBets Saga
Steve Jobs
Hollywood is no stranger to competing projects that are each racing to be first or to be the definitive story, be it two Fyre Fest documentaries, two biopics about Steve Jobs or two different “Jungle Books.” But the number of projects surrounding GameStop and the investors on Reddit’s WallStreetBets is unheard of.

TheWrap counts a whopping eight different projects all announced within the last few weeks that aim to focus on how GameStop, labeled a “meme stock” by independent online traders, surged by 1500% in market share before the price came crashing down again. Those come in the form of narrative feature films as well as documentary features and series that all want to cash in on the story of the traders who really did manage to cash in.

It’s no wonder there’s so much interest; the story is a good one. Individual, amateur investors found an opportunity...

How ‘Console Wars’ Took a Winding Path to the Screen
Image
Nearly a decade ago, young and hungry writing partners Blake. J. Harris and Jonah Tulis were brimming with ideas. Most were comedy pitches for film and TV, things they thought might sell. But down at the very bottom of a pitch list their manager, Julian Rosenberg, asked them to compile was something offbeat that caught his eye: an idea for a documentary about the 1990s battle between Sega and Nintendo.

The writers loved the idea, but they had buried it on that list for a reason.

“I figured no one was going to care about this,” says Harris....

Official Trailer for 'Console Wars' Doc Film About Sega vs Nintendo
Blake J. Harris
"They were furious with us!" "I did not expect the US Congress to get involved." A video game war! CBS All Access has released an official trailer for a documentary titled Console Wars, from filmmakers Blake J. Harris & Jonah Tulis. This was set to premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival, and will next launch on the CBS streaming service later this month. In 1990, Sega, a fledgling arcade company assembled a team of misfits to take on the greatest video game company in the world, Nintendo. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pit brother against brother, kids against grownups, Sonic against Mario, and also uniquely American capitalism against centuries-old Japanese tradition. For the first time ever, the men and women who fought on the front lines for Sega and Nintendo discuss this battle that defined a generation. Executive produced by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg. This sounds and looks radical!

How Console Wars and Insert Coin Re-examine the Games Industry of the ’90s
Blake J. Harris
As gamers, we’re always looking for the next big thing, whether it’s a disruptive new way to play (e.g. virtual and augmented reality) or an innovation in what makes games tick (ray tracing). But sometimes we’re so busy pushing forward that we forget to look back. Fortunately, two upcoming documentaries will take us back to the days when arcades were still swallowing our quarters and Nintendo and Sega ruled our living rooms.

Insert Coin, by 25-year game industry veteran and indie filmmaker Josh Tsui, chronicles the history of Midway Games, the legendary studio behind such arcade classics as Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, and many more. Console Wars, which tells the story of how Sega tried to bring down Nintendo with the Genesis, is the documentary version of the beloved non-fiction book of the same name by Blake J. Harris, who directed the film with documentarian Jonah Tulis.

In His Own Words: 'Such Great Heights' Director Shares Scene From His Mma Doc
Such Great Heights (2012)
Below director Jonah Tulis shares a scene from his Mixed Martial Arts (Mma) documentary "Such Great Heights," currenly available On Demand on via iTunes. The film follows welterweight Mma fighter Jon Fitch as he prepares for the fight of his life against perennial Ufc Champ, Georges St. Pierre. While Fitch focuses on his training, the story weaves through the daily triumphs and challenges of the other fighters at the American Kickboxing Academy (Aka). The Film I come from a scripted comedy background, so “Such Great Heights” was quite a departure for me, both stylistically and creatively. But the more I worked on the film, the more I realized that whether you’re making a comedy, a drama, a narrative feature or a documentary, there is always one constant: it’s all about the characters. And in the making of this film, we certainly found some incredibly compelling and surprising characters; characters,...
