AI is here to stay, but how it should and shouldn’t be used is still a subject of much debate, particularly in the entertainment industry. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal (via Deadline), Disney had considered some ambitious ideas for using AI on several upcoming projects, including Tron: Ares and the live-action Moana movie.
According to WSJ sources, Disney executives “pitched the idea of actually incorporating AI into one of the characters in the sequel to the 1980s hit movie Tron as a buzzy marketing strategy.” The character would have been a sidekick of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), but the idea didn’t move forward because the executives were told “that the company couldn’t risk the bad publicity.“
Tron: Ares stars Jared Leto as Ares, a highly sophisticated Program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings.

The pilot episode of “The Studio” has perhaps its greatest cameo by a real-life Hollywood personality — none other than the auteur filmmaker himself, Martin Scorsese. In the extended guest appearance, the director is brought on to be the director for a “Kool-Aid” movie… although his version (a supposed passion project for the man behind “Raging Bull”) will actually be the story of Jim Jones’ notorious Jonestown massacre. He ends up getting fired, which offends Scorsese and every other major star in town, and at the end of the episode Seth Rogen and Ike Barinholtz’s studio mogul characters get kicked out of an exclusive Charlize Theron-hosted party.
Throwing Scorsese into a role that requires him to poke fun at his own persona, though, was a gamble — at least emotionally — for Rogen, who also co-wrote and co-directed the episode.
“It’s very weird,” Rogen told Variety. “The fact that he...

Rejoice, rom-com fans, as Julia Roberts’ 1997 romantic comedy classic, My Best Friend’s Wedding, is about to get a sequel! Recent developments on the project reveal that it’s being written by Celine Song (via Collider), whose previous work on Past Lives (2023) has been nominated for Academy Awards.
Safe to say, the sequel, which will be released under Sony’s banner, has a lot of responsibilities going forward, one of which is replicating the success of the beloved rom-com that starred Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett.
In a recent interview with the New York Post, Dermot commented,
“I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”
No further details about the release date and additional cast are currently available, as the project is still in very early development stages. Still, Celine Song’s involvement invokes confidence in the sequel.

Wedding bells may be ringing for Celine Song, who has been tapped to write a sequel to Sony’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The project is in early development, and at this stage, Song is attached to write, but not direct, and would not necessarily be her next project.
The film would follow the 1997 classic starring Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney as Julianne and Michael, a pair of best friends who made a pact that if they were still single at age 28, they would get married. When Mulroney’s character becomes to another woman (Cameron Diaz), Roberts had just four days to stop the wedding. The feature was a box office hit, earning $127 million domestically ($256 million today).
As a director and writer, Song helped elevate the romantic genre with Past Lives, which earned Oscar nominations for best picture and best director. It was a star-making turn for Greta Lee,...

A classic Julia Roberts-led romantic comedy that boosted her reputation as one of Hollywood's household names is set for the sequel treatment nearly three decades after it premiered. A new report confirms a return down the aisle for an in-development My Best Friend's Wedding sequel.
According to Collider, Sony Pictures is working on My Best Friend's Wedding 2, with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Celine Song penning the script for the follow-up. The sequel is in early development, with no director or casting information confirmed for the film. It's unknown whether Roberts or other stars from the original are returning for the second installment.
Song struck gold in the rom-com genre before. Collider has learned that Academy Award-nominated writer, Celine Song, has lined up one of her next projects — and it’s a familiar title. Sony is looking to make a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding, the iconic rom-com from 1997 that starred Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, and Cameron Diaz. While the project is still in very early development, we can confirm that the studio has tapped Song as its scribe, which is not just a huge step forward but a major get considering her recent successes. Song has only been tapped to write the sequel; a director and any casting information haven’t been announced at this time, but Mulroney recently teased the potential follow-up, telling the New York Post, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.” Well, now it seems like the hype can begin to build as we roll towards yet another sequel...

Jared Leto appears to still be embracing his well-known method acting style, a practice that drew plenty of attention during his time on Suicide Squad. But this time around, and luckily for the Tron: Ares cast, Leto wasn't playing someone as menacing and disgusting as the Joker.
During the film’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Leto’s co-star Jeff Bridges shared a humorous story about their time working together. In his usual laid-back drawl, Bridges remarked, “He’s one of those guys. Everyone has different methods and modes, man.”
The crowd laughed as Bridges continued with a light jab: “I didn’t want to offend him as a thespian, but I thought, ‘I wanted to have a certain intimacy with you. I know your name is Ares. Can I just call you Air?’ He said, ‘Yeah man! You can call me whatever you want!’ We had a great time.

With Marvel Mia from San Deigo Comic-Con, Disney pulled out all stops for its Tron: Ares panel. Dazzling light show. Eye-popping clips from the movie. A new Nine Inch Nails music video. A stacked lineup of Jeff Bridges, Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Cameron Monaghan, along with director Joachim Rønning, and creator-producer Steven Lisberger, who wrote and directed the original, with certified nerd Kevin Smith moderating.
As Smith pointed out from the jump, the original Tron’s influence far outweighed its meager box office in 1982, a year where the sci-fi film was overshadowed by the likes of E.T., Blade Runner, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, and The Road Warrior. “It was a visionary science-fiction motion picture that wasn’t appreciated in its time,” Smith said. Indeed, Tron’s pioneering use of computer graphics and concept of the Grid,...

Before Jeff Bridges got to the set of Tron: Ares, he was informed that his co-star Jared Leto would prefer to be addressed by his character, Ares. The Oscar-winner is known for his method acting ways.
“He’s one of those guys. Everyone has different methods and modes man,” said Bridges to laughs during Tron: Ares’ laser-heavy presentation at San Diego Comic-Con Friday.
“I didn’t want to offend him as a thespo,” Bridges continued, addressing Leto, who is known as a method actor. “But I thought, ‘I wanted to have a certain intimacy with you. I know your name is Ares. Leto, for his part, recalled the first scene he had with Bridges. “I just blurted out, ‘cut!’ Everyone was surprised, because I don’t often do that.

“Tron: Ares” blew the roof off of San Diego Comic-Con at its panel on Friday evening, with an eye-popping, ear-blasting laser-light show set to the pulsing original score by Nine Inch Nails. Jeff Bridges and Jared Leto came to San Diego Comic-Con to promote the upcoming “Tron: Ares,” the third film in the sci-fi franchise, and as part of the presentation they treated the Hall H crowd to two clips featuring the iconic light cycles — plus a new music video from composer Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails.
The footage shows Ares (Leto) and Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith) chasing Eve (Great Lee) in the film’s first light cycle chase that takes place in the real world. Eve manages to evade them and also manages to steal Athena’s light cycle in the process, much to her amazement.

In another clip, they previewed the immersive world of the grid in another chase sequence involving Ares and Eve trying to escape the grid into the transfer portal.
The final promo clip is the new music video for the film from Nine Inch Nails.

Tron: Ares, the highly anticipated third installment in the groundbreaking Tron franchise, is set to reach theatres on October 10th – and with just over two months to go before that date arrives, a Tron: Ares panel was held at San Diego Comic-Con to build the hype.
The film was directed by Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning and stars Jared Leto (Morbius), Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Hasan Minhaj (No Hard Feelings), Arturo Castro (Road House), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), and returning Tron star Jeff Bridges. No, Dr. Doom didn’t show up at this year’s Comic-Con. But Disney sure as hell brought the dazzle with a laser light show that one-upped what they pulled off at CinemaCon, complete with a Tron: Ares logo in full neon red and two Tron-like warriors marching to the front of the stage.
“Did you see that entrance?” asked moderator Kevin Smith, “That cost more than Clerks!“
At the panel were director Joachim Rønning with stars Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson, Cameron Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, the programmer from the original 1982 movie who gets caught in his own videogame. Leto drew big cheers from the crowd, as did Bridges.
In the third Tron movie, a highly sophisticated program, Ares (played by Oscar winner Leto) is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission.

Kathryn Bigelow already has two Academy Awards to her name, and she will be back for a buzzy awards run later this year. After making her directorial debut with the biker movie The Loveless (1981), Bigelow made a name for herself directing thrillers, such as Near Dark (1987), Blue Steel (1990), Point Break (1991), Strange Days (1995), and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002).
She gained critical acclaim for The Hurt Locker (2008), about a bomb squad in Iraq, and Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, with the war movie also winning Best Picture. She followed that up with the political thriller Zero Dark Thirty (2012), about the manhunt for Osama bin Laden, and earned another Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
However, her last movie was the crime drama Detroit (2017), but now, the first look at Bigelow's first film in eight years has been revealed.

In 1982, Steven Lisberger changed the landscape for effects-driven cinema with Tron. In 2010, Joseph Kosinski changed the game again with Tron Legacy, a smartly formulated, visually dazzling reboot-cum-legacy sequel set to the throbbing beats of Daft Punk. Now, 15 years later, Joachim Rønning is picking up the bright neon torch to push the envelope once again with Tron: Ares, a movie that's set to see worlds collide as, for the first time in the franchise's history, we're not heading to the Grid — the Grid's heading for us. Check out the eye-popping new trailer below;

The official trailer for "Tron: Ares" is here, and it has quite a bit going for it. Like both of its predecessors, "Tron" and "Tron: Legacy," however, it appears that there are two very important elements driving "Tron: Ares" — its soundtrack and its neon-soaked visuals. Despite being snubbed for an Oscar nomination (because the Academy thought using a computer for visual effects was "cheating" back in 1982), "Tron" helped blow the lid off of what can be done in special effects and paved the way for more computer-generated imagery (CGI) in movies and TV. It only makes sense, then, that its sequels would also be visually stunning, and "Legacy" absolutely nailed the assignment back in 2010. So, what about "Ares"?
Based on the film's trailer (see above), which features all kinds of cool visuals with lots of neon-streaked vehicles and armor, "Ares" is going to take the stellar visuals of the "Tron...
