Originally shot in 2001, director Cameron McCulloch made Scam. The action-comedy film about a scam artist named Kim (Kestie Morassi), who plans to steal Aus$1million worth of jewellery, despite fierce competition from rival gangs (including her ex-boyfriend Ben), all to impress her mobster father (Ian Rooney).

Prior to its anticipated release, McCulloch’s efforts went up in smoke, literally, as most of the original footage was lost in a house fire… or so we thought. It seems McCulloch heeded the words of Knackers O’Conner,: “Did you, or did you not, say you we’re gonna do this job?!” Well, 20 years later, McCulloch did do his job and brought Scam to the world for its viewing pleasure.

In 2001, the world was introduced to the iPod and Australia had its first taste of digital television.

It’s fair to say the year left its mark in more ways than one, but for Cameron McCulloch, not everything went to plan.

At the time, the then film student was on the verge of completing his feature debut, Scam, starring Kestie Morassi, only for a large portion of the footage to be destroyed in a housefire at a crew member’s place.

Twenty years on and the film is set to have its world premiere at next month’s Monster Fest after being resurrected by cast member and editor Nathan Hill during the 2020 lockdown.

McCulloch, who wrote and then filmed the project on a MiniDV in 12 days for $5,000, said he was “in awe” that it was finally seeing the light of day.

Recent years have seen a resurgance in the horror anthology, from the likes of V/H/S to The ABC’s of Death – both of which have inspired many a filmmaker to create their own anthology, to vary degrees of success. The latest to join the ranks is Zombieworld, a collection of 11 shorts, which was put together by Ruthless Pictures in association with horror website Dread Central. Here's a funny short film directed by Cameron McCulloch called The Tea Party. It features a princess, a prince, and a group of foul-mouthed stuffed animal pets. I thought the short was entertaining. Make sure to watch through the end, because that's where the real Wtf moment comes into play. 

Princess has waited a long time to finally meet her Prince Charming, the only thing standing in their way is her foul mouthed pets and the lack of a condiment.

One of the reasons why I like this so much is because it's such a weird, uncomfortable setting. Enjoy!

Cameron McCulloch's short film Home is a striking tale of the everyday travails of an unnamed woman (Jamie McDowell) struggling to survive in the wake of a zombie outbreak and the consequences that her actions have on her soul.

The entire story is told in stark imagery, without a single line of dialogue. It's a more effective adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic novel I Am Legend than the 2007 blockbuster with Will Smith, even though it's not really that at all. The story and tone of Home reminded me of the Matheson story for some reason [...]...

I'm absolutely amazed at the amount of horror out there. It seems as if indie features and shorts are everywhere, and so many of you guys are doing amazing work. At Dread Central we do our best to get the word out when we stumble upon an impressive piece that might otherwise fly under your radar. With that in mind, say hello to Home.

Written and directed by Cameron McCulloch, Home stars Jamie McDowell as a woman in an isolated homestead in the Australian bush surrounded by the undead. Shot over the course of two weekends (3-1/2 days), the film was made for about $2,000 but has the professional look of a much more expensive production.

Billed as a "RomZom" (that's romantic zombie film), Home is truly a brilliant piece of filmmaking. The fact that work of this quality was done on that budget and schedule is nothing short of amazing.

What if...Everything around you was gone? Everyone you knew was gone? Where would you go? Cameron McCulloch's new short film titled Home tells the story of a lone surviving woman, stuck in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the undead, trying to hold on to the last of her humanity. Do you have what it takes to survive, alone?...

Home is unlike any other horror short you've ever witnessed. The film is shot in High Definition (excuse the quality of the trailer below) and is completely void of any dialogue. It relies on the sense of helplessness and shear terror. Expect this Australian film to make it stateside at all the major film conventions this summer.
