Torben Ulrich, Danish tennis pro, jazz writer and father of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, has died at the age of 95.

Nirvana‘s Unplugged concert is often presented as the band’s final show, but they actually played another month of American dates after that November 18th, 1993 MTV taping and then headed over to Europe the following February. Cellist Melora Creager joined the band for this leg, replacing Lori Goldston who spent the previous year on the road with the group. Vanessa Renwick, founder and head janitor of the Oregon Department of Kick Ass, is heading down to Los Angeles for a special one-night only presentation of a selection of her documentaries curated by Mark Toscano.
Renwick’s poetic approach to documentary filmmaking has long made her a favorite here at Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film. Two of the docs that Toscano has picked for this event are not to be missed. First, Richart (2001), co-directed with Dawn Smallman, is a profile of scrap artist Richard Tracy, who has transformed his home into one massive metal sculpture that encourages tactile interaction with its visitors. Then, Britton, South Dakota (2003) is a found-footage documentary of portraits of the residents of the eponymous town shot in 1938 with a haunting, relentless score by Johnne Eschleman.
