Just For Laughs has inked $20M in new broadcast TV deals ahead of the launch of this year’s festival — the first edition of Jfl Montreal in two years — organizers announced on Tuesday.

Among the 50 hours programming announced as part of the deal, which will be broadcast around the world, is Roast Battle Canada, Season 5, which the fest’s new President & CEO Sylvain Parent-Bédard teased in a sit-down with colleagues Spencer Griffin and Nick Brazao in our just-released Comedy Means Business podcast on the festival. Bert Kreischer has made five stand-up specials for Netflix, and now he’s taking the time-honored path trod by many comedians: starring in a sitcom.

Kreischer will play the title role in and is a co-creator of Free Bert, a six-episode comedy the streamer has ordered. Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (The Grinder, Huge in France) co-created the show with Kreischer and will serve as showrunners, writers and directors. The cast also includes Arden Myrin, Lilou Lang and Ava Ryan.

In Free Bert, Kreischer will play a version of himself — a “shirtless comedian, party legend, perpetual wildcard,” as the show’s logline puts it. He finds himself in unfamiliar territory when his daughters (Lang and Ryan) are accepted at an elite private school in Beverly Hills. When his antics turn the family into outcasts, he decides to put a shirt on and stifle his true self in order to fit in.

Netflix has been slowly evolving into what broadcast networks have stood for — offering a broad spectrum of entertainment for everyone. Earlier this month, ABC formally announced that cast members from “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless” are among the contestants set to appear during the upcoming 11th season of “Celebrity Family Feud,” the primetime game show hosted by Steve Harvey (“Family Feud”).

The news comes weeks after actors from both shows shared behind the scenes snaps on Instagram and other social media platforms following a taping last month in Atlanta.

Although a specific air date for the soap opera cast matchup has not been revealed, the primetime game show is scheduled to launch its new season on Thursday, July 10 at 8:00 p.m. Et/Pt on ABC with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.

Soap stars participating include Finola Hughes, Donnell Turner, Rena Sofer, Tanisha Harper and Maurice Benard from “General Hospital”, and Joshua Morrow, Michelle Stafford, Lauralee Bell, Melissa Claire Egan and Bryton James from “The Young and the Restless.

In Fixed, premiering at the Annecy International Festival of Animation in France, Netflix has a nice feature film companion piece for its oh-so-adult animation shows like Big Mouth. This one about a pooch named Bull fetting over the imminent loss of his doggie testicles — or so he thinks — is in the vein of Seth Rogen’s very Seth Rogenish 2016 toon Sausage Party and going way back to the king of the genre Ralph Bakshi’s 1972 Fritz the Cat, which was sold with the ad line, “We’re not rated ‘X’ For nothin’, baby!”

That animated breakthrough announced loudly and proudly that cartoons are not always kids stuff, but quite frankly, compared to Fixed, it might as well have come from Disney.

Adding to the praise for his R-rated “Lady and the Tramp meets Shaving Private Ryan” animated comedy, Tartakovsky is making headlines for his next project, Heist Safari, a high-octane animated action comedy telling the story of three frog brothers who rob a bank. According to the project’s logline, Heist Safari, “Seems simple enough, but the execution is special as !#&$??!!!!”

Heist Safari comes to Adult Swim one year after the concept was pitched on stage at Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Recently, while speaking at the Cartoon Network panel, Tartakovsky said, “It feels like when I was younger, I feel like that energy makes me still want to do new things,” regarding his restored desire to create off-the-wall animation.

Now that it's the summertime and the new fall television season nears, it's crunch time for TV fans. Most, if not all, broadcast shows have already had their fates determined, as have a vast majority of recent streaming series releases. Obviously, streamers don't adhere to the traditional fall to spring television season cycle, allowing renewal and cancellation news to arrive at any moment.

Just For Laughs has rounded out its 2025 Gala host lineup with the addition of Roy Wood Jr. and Mikey Day, who will join previously announced hosts Michelle Buteau and Fortune Feimster for the festival’s marquee events running July 25-26 in Montreal.

The festival, which runs July 16-27, will feature solo showcases from rising stars Ralph Barbosa, Joe Dombrowski, and Carlos Ballarta, whose show will be performed entirely in Spanish.

Wood Jr., who will host the July 25 Gala, brings significant television credentials to the role. The Made in NY Awards have announced Darren Aronofsky, Michelle Buteau, Tracy Morgan, and Thomas J. O’Donnell, president of Local 817 International Brotherhood of Teamsters, as the honorees for the upcoming 2025 ceremony.

Fans of Forever can rejoice as the show will be back for a second season. Based on the 1975 Judy Blume novel, this series tells the story of two Black teens navigating love and identity.

Netflix is ditching its usual Fysee: LA pop-up destination, and instead will turn its annual Emmys showcase into what it’s positioning as a citywide festival. Top Netflix contenders like “Adolescence,” “Black Mirror” and “The Four Seasons” will be spotlighted through a mix of official TV Academy FYC panels and standalone events, as announced Thursday by comedian John Mulaney.

Running May 17 to June 2, the two-week festival will take place in multiple theaters across town.

Netflix is launching its own two-week TV festival to toast its hit series, this year moving it to Los Angeles.

The studio announced the inaugural fest, titled Fysee LA, that will take place across Los Angeles from May 17 to June 2. The casts of series such as “Adolescence,” “Squid Game,” “Nobody Wants This,” and “Black Mirror” will be in attendance, with a special taping of “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” opening the festival at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Fysee LA will host a dedicated festival headquarters with special marathon screenings and a destination for crafts, with events tailored to Emmy voters. Netflix emphasized that Fysee LA will support local businesses that were impacted by the 2024 wildfires; initiatives include highlighting restaurants, coffee shops, florists, and more as the festival brings voters to various locations in the city. The company, via its Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney host John Mulaney, announced that during the two weeks between Saturday, May 17, and Monday, June 2, it will host Fysee LA, a festival for which it will take over theaters and iconic locations throughout the city of Los Angeles in order to bring together TV Academy members and Netflix’s Emmy-contending talent.
