It's important to distinguish misery from unhappiness. Misery is the human awareness of our extreme vulnerability in the world. Unhappiness is a social condition in which our desires flood up against the constraints of social order. And yet, of course, we are constantly told to be happy, that there's something wrong with you if you're not happy.
