Bloody Axe Wound Review
Image
A scene from Bloody Axe Wound. Courtesy of Shudder

Bloody Axe Wound is a darkly comedic gore-fest that may be sporting my favorite title in recent memory. The product, alas, does not reach those heights for the genre. Still, this plays out with enough splatter to feed the beasts within us.

Our star and narrator is Abbie (believe it or not) Bladecut (Sari Arambulo) – a young woman trying to rise in her dad’s failing business. Roger Bladecut runs a shabby little video store that primarily exists on the sale and rental of the vividly gruesome snuff films he makes in their otherwise quiet small town of Clover Falls. All the Bladecut flicks focus on savagely slaying local teenagers, significantly depleting the high school’s population. Roger does the choosing and killing. But Abbie yearns to take up the reins, since daddy’s getting too old and unwell to count...

Bloody Axe Wound review – keep-it-in-the-family serial-killer horror is gorily absurd
Billy Burke
The daughter of a masked killer is keen to follow her father into slaughtering local popular teenagers, but there’s a problem: it’s just not silly enough

In the sleepy town of Clover Falls, popular teens are butchered with regularity by a disfigured masked killer in the Freddy/Jason/Michael mode, named Roger Bladecut (Billy Burke). Their deaths are filmed and sold as horror movies at the local video store, run by Roger Bladecut. This maniac’s daughter, Abbie (Sari Arambulo), is for some reason keen to follow in her father’s footsteps, but when she starts hanging out with other teens realises that maybe murdering your fellow humans isn’t all its cracked up to be.

Even a cursory outline of the premise is probably enough to set alarm bells ringing for anyone with even a passing interest in plausible world-building. For those willing to suspend their disbelief,...

Hilarious ‘Supernatural’ Scenes of Sam and Dean Mocking Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Iconic TV Series Gave Show Its 2nd Highest Rated Episode Ever
Image
Supernatural had its fair share of intense demon hunts and emotional brotherly moments, but nothing hit harder than when Sam and Dean took a break to hilariously roast Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s other TV gig. Fans ate it up.

The playful jabs and inside jokes turned what could’ve been a regular episode into an instant classic — so much so that it became the show’s second highest-rated episode ever.

When Supernatural went full Grey’s Anatomy, and fans loved every second A still from Supernatural | Credit: CW

Supernatural knew how to have fun, but Changing Channels (2009) took it to another level. Sam and Dean found themselves trapped in a TV-themed nightmare, and their Grey’s Anatomy spoof? Absolute gold.

The episode nailed every iconic Grey’s detail — Seattle Mercy (a cheeky twist on Seattle Grace), Dr. Wang (a nod to Cristina Yang), and the ultimate heartthrob,...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan's New Comedy Slasher Film Sets Streaming Release Date
Image
Rlje Films' new comedy slasher film Bloody Axe Wound is heading to Shudder, the horror-focused streaming platform. This follows the theatrical release of the movie in December 2024.

Shudder has announced that Bloody Axe Wound is set to start streaming exclusively on the platform on March 21, 2025. Written and directed by Matthew John Lawrence, the film features a special appearance from The Walking Dead: Dead City star Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It's a role that the actor was all too happy to take on, as it gave him another opportunity to get violent — something he's proven himself to be quite capable of on-screen.

Review: Bloody Axe Wound is a Frustrating Horror Comedy That is Saved By Its Huge Heart
Image
Coming of age can be difficult. You want to prove yourself, but you’re not entirely sure who you are yet. What is important to you? What really matters? How are you going to make yourself noticed? And will anyone pay attention?

These are questions that are often the crux of coming-of-age films, in the horror genre and beyond. Young characters trying to find their place in the world, whether that be the small town Oregon of Stand By Me, or the monstrous life opening up to Izzy in Hellbender. These films always see a character at a turning point, one foot in childhood and one in adulthood, trying to figure out where their next steps will take them. In Bloody Axe Wound, that path happens to be littered with dead bodies.

Abby Bladecut (Sari Arambulo) is going through typical teenager stuff. She is pushing boundaries, asserting her independence, and...

Bloody Axe Wound's Hilarie Burton On Producing Wild Horror-Comedy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Role In The Movie & One Tree Hill Sequel
Image
Hilarie Burton is expanding her producorial roster in Bloody Axe Wound. Having first started as a host on MTV's Total Request Live, Burton would find her big break in the acting world with her role as Peyton in One Tree Hill, starring in the first six seasons of the hit teen drama. She has since found success both on the big and small screens, including the well-received drama The Secret Life of Bees, USA Network's White Collar and recurring roles on Grey's Anatomy and the Lethal Weapon show, among others.

Burton has teamed with her husband and producing partner, The Walking Dead's Jeffrey Dean Morgan, to produce Bloody Axe Wound, a horror comedy set in the small town of Clover Falls, in which serial slashers are not only the norm, but are also stars releasing edited versions of their kills in the vein of horror movies. Bloody Axe Wound's Sari Arambulo & Molly Brown On Horror-Comedy And Their Characters' Unique Relationship
Image
Sari Arambulo and Molly Brown are on opposite sides of a murderous world in Bloody Axe Wound. After a variety of smaller roles in everything from ABC's The Middle to Girl Meets World, Arambulo broke out in the NBC and Peacock comedy A.P. Bio as Grace, while also having appeared in The L Word: Generation Q. Brown similarly got her start with small supporting roles in a variety of TV shows before holding a more recurring role in CBS and Paramount+'s Evil, while also landing the major role of Debra Morgan in the newly released Dexter: Original Sin.

Arambulo stars in Bloody Axe Wound as Abbie Bladecut, the daughter of serial slasher Roger Bladecut who aspires to follow in his footsteps and become Clover Falls' next star slasher. In an effort to learn his ways, she goes undercover at the local high school, where she meets Brown's Sam Crane,...

'Bloody Axe Wound' Review | A Fun Punk Horror Comedy
Image
Bloody Axe Wound isn’t director/screenwriter Matthew John Lawrence’s first foray into horror. The filmmaker also wrote and directed 2020’s Uncle Peckerhead, which chronicled a punk band’s first tour and how it takes a wrong turn when a man-eating demon becomes a roadie. Larry Gone Demon, a short from 2015, held similar punk rock/horror vibes, and so does Bloody Axe Wound. In fact, there’s a distinctly original and altogether smart edge permeating throughout the movie, which groups it with some of the finer indie horror we've seen this year.

Welcome to Clover Falls, yet another small town where truly sick and terrifying things occur. You’d think by now there would be a built-in therapy fund offered for residents of these hidden portals, which seem to be a great playground for death and mayhem. But then we wouldn’t be tuning in to get good jump...

Why Jeffrey Dean Morgan Didn't Want the Lead Role in His New Horror Comedy
Image
Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been a lot of things in his career, but one thing he won’t be is the leading man in his upcoming horror comedy, Bloody Axe Wound, and for good reason. Morgan appears in the film in a supporting role as Butch Slater alongside stars Sari Arambulo and Billy Burke. The movie focuses on Arambulo’s character of Abbie Bladecut as she follows in the footsteps of her serial killer father (Burke) to become the first female slasher villain in the family, and based on the trailer seen below, it looks like a lot of fun.

Produced by both Morgan and his wife, Hilarie Burton, Bloody Axe Wound opens in theaters today, and when Screen Rant recently caught up with Burton to discuss Morgan’s part in the movie, she revealed that he decided not to give himself the starring role as Abbie’s father, Roger Bladecut,...

Bloody Axe Wound Review: A Fun Tribute to Classic Slashers
Image
Plot: In the small town of Clover Falls, Abbie’s father, Roger Bladecut, has built an infamous legacy by capturing real-life killings on tape and selling them to eager customers, but as Abbie delves deeper into the grisly family business, she begins to wonder if it’s time to take the family tradition in a new direction.

Review: Ever since Scream, one of the only ways to really do an interesting slasher is to break it down to its simplest elements and subvert them. Most of the standard tales have been done before so adding a little creativity is really the only way to stand out. But there’s a balance that must be struck in order to stick out and not fall into common pitfalls. Bloody Axe Wound does a great job of paying homage to the 80s while still providing a modern take. Does it come together in...

Why Jeffrey Dean Morgan Opened Lead Role In New Bloody Horror-Comedy To A Different Actor Thoughtfully Explained By Producer
Image
Jeffrey Dean Morgan could have been the leading man of his new horror-comedy movie but opted not to. The actor is likely best known for television roles including playing John Winchester on Supernatural, Joe Kessler on The Boys, Jason Crouse on The Good Wife, and Denny Duquette on Grey's Anatomy. However, he has also held roles in prominent movies, especially those directed by Zack Snyder, including playing Comedian in Watchmen and Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Morgan joined the cast of The Walking Dead in 2016 as the notorious villain Negan Smith, a role he played for more than 60 episodes across six seasons and later reprised in the spinoff Dead City, which has been renewed for the upcoming season 2. This prominent role led to an uptick in horror and thriller roles, and since 2016 he has appeared in a wide variety of genre titles including The Postcard Killings,...

Interview: Hilarie Burton Morgan, and the cast of Bloody Axe Wound Slash Into Their Film
Image
Last Updated on December 26, 2024

Nothing quite makes my heart warm like a good slasher movie. And I know many of our readers agree. But the genre has been neglected far too much and is often left to low Iq fare. Every now and then someone comes along and clearly seems to care more than the average filmmaker. They see the genre for what it is: a canvas to be able to show off creative kills and tales of chaos. And thankfully producers Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Hilarie Burton Morgan are more than up to the task with their first feature-length horror film, Bloody Axe Wound. I really enjoyed the film and you can check out my review later this week.

I was fortunate enough to discuss Bloody Axe Wound with its stars Sari Arambulo and Molly Brown. I’ve been a fan of Sari’s since AP Bio, so I...

Watch Our Exclusive Panel Interview Below!

A.P. Bio Season 3 Preview

A.P. Bio star Glenn Howerton wants to make one thing very clear about the show’s move from NBC to Peacock: it wasn’t canceled… or at least not canceled in the traditional sense of the term.

“This has always been misrepresented a little bit,” Howerton says. “The show did Ok on NBC but not great. And certainly not good enough for them to pick it up. But it was always my understanding that the show kind of crushed it on Hulu. Then Hulu wasn’t doing work with NBC Universal anymore. So we had this large streaming audience but nowhere to put the show. Then when Peacock decided to do Peacock Originals, they picked us up really quickly.”

Through two seasons, A.P. Bio was always indeed a streaming-friendly show. The darkly funny series follows disgraced Harvard professor...

‘A.P. Bio’ Drops Pandemic-Free Season 3 Trailer And Key Art Ahead Of Peacock Premiere
Image
Peacock released a new trailer and key art for A.P. Bio‘s third season during its panel at the virtual Ctam press tour Monday. The trailer comes ahead of the September 3 premiere of the comedy series from executive producer Lorne Michaels.

When asked about whether or not the current Covid-19 pandemic would materialize in the new season, comedian Patton Oswalt had sarcastic words on the matter.

“You’re going to be seeing a lot of pandemic pratfall and antics. No, we’re not going to, really. Obviously there’s a lot of uncertainty, but, no, we’re not going to work the pandemic into this season. I’m sorry,” said Oswalt.

Creator Mike O’Brien echoed Oswalt’s sentiments and even recounted a story where his writing staff brushed closely with producing an eerie flu-related episode.

“There’s a recurring pitch from the writers long before we thought pandemics...

Patton Oswalt and Glenn Howerton in A.P. Bio (2018)
One day after A.P. Bio Creator-Executive Producer Mike O’Brien broke the news that the sophomore sitcom had been canceled, fans have taken to social media in an effort to bring it back.

The hashtag #SaveAPBio trended throughout the day Saturday on Twitter. Among the comments, viewers said they were “crushed” and the show “will be missed.”

“Maybe networks should let good quality shows grow for more than 2 seasons before axing it,” one person tweeted.

Another urged Netflix to pick up the series, writing: “C’mon Netflix!!!!!”

Someone else added: “Such an incredible cast and the show was just hitting its stride. There’s still so much potential!”

‘A.P. Bio’ Canceled By NBC After 2 Seasons
There will be no third season for NBC comedy series A.P. Bio, executive produced by Seth Meyers. Creator/exec producer Mike O’Brien revealed the news on Twitter.

“I’m intensely sad to announce that AP Bio will be ending after this season,” he wrote Friday “This has been my favorite project of my life and that’s because of the amazing writers, cast and crew. As most canceled shows probably feel, I think we were just hitting our stride and everyone was still loving the work, so this is very hard. We have 4 left to air and they’re 4 of my favorites.”

A.P. Bio was among several NBC midseason bubble series whose fate was not decided before the upfronts, along with freshmen Abby’s, The Enemy Within and The Village. Neither is expected to return next season.

The high school comedy starring Glenn Howerton was relatively well-received by critics,...

‘A.P. Bio’ Renewed For Season 2 By NBC
NBC has ordered a second season of its new midseason comedy series A.P.Bio, executive produced by Seth Meyers.

A.P. Bio was a big priority for NBC this midseason. The single-camera comedy got a major push with two special previews, including one after the Closing Ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympics. The series also got a digital promotional run ahead of its official premiere, which netted respectable sampling.

The high school comedy starring Glenn Howerton has not been a breakout. A.P. Bio is averaging a modest 1.2 rating in 18-49 and 3.7 million viewers overall in L+7 . But comedies are usually slow at the start and need time to grow. Plus, A.P. Bio has been relatively well received by critics, and it has been attracting highly educated audiences — the series indexes at a 149 among adults 18-49 with four or more years of college to rank #3 among primetime series on the Big 4 networks.

‘AP Bio’ Renewed, Comedies Produced by Michael Schur, Amy Poehler Get Series Orders From NBC
“A.P. Bio” — and two new shows — just made the grade at NBC.

The Glenn Howerton-led series has been picked up for a Season 2 by the Peacock, which is also granting series orders to a pair of comedy pilots from executive producers (and network faves) Michael Schur and Amy Poehler.

Hailing from “The Good Place” producers Schur and David Miner and led by star Natalie Morales, NBC describes “Abby’s” as a hilariously aspirational new comedy about the best bar in San Diego, home to good prices, great company and, of course, Abby. This unlicensed, makeshift bar nestled in her backyard as the opposite of everything annoying about today’s party scene. There are rules at Abby’s: no cell phones (not even to “look something up”), earning a seat at the bar takes time and losing a challenge means drinking a limey, sugary “not-beer” drink. As the oddball cast of regulars will tell you, hanging out at Abby’s is a coveted honor. But once you’re in, you’re family.

Along with lead Morales, the cast includes Nelson Franklin, Kimia Behpoornia, Jessica Chaffin, Leonard Ouzts and Neil Flynn.

Schur and Miner are executive produce along with Josh Malmuth, who penned the script for the multi-cam (shot outside in front of a live audience). Pamela Fryman is directing and also executive producing the pilot. “Abby’s” comes from Universal Television, Fremulon and 3 Arts Entertainment.

The Poheler-produced project, “I Feel Bad,” centers around Emet (Sarayu Blue), the perfect mom, boss, wife, friend and daughter. Ok, according to the logline, she’s not perfect. In fact, she’s just figuring it out like the rest of us. Sure, she feels bad when she has a sexy dream about someone other than her husband, or when she pretends not to know her kids when they misbehave in public, or when she uses her staff to help solve personal problems. But that’s Ok, right? Nobody can have it all and do it perfectly. From executive producer Amy Poehler comes a modern comedy about being perfectly Ok with being imperfect.

Other cast members include Paul Adelstein, Aisling Bea, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton and James Buckley.

Aseem Batra will write and executive produce the comedy, with Julie Anne Robinson directing and executive producing the pilot. Poehler, Dave Becky and Josh Maurer also executive produce. The series hails from Universal Television, Paper Kite Productions, CannyLads Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.

As for newly-renewed “A.P. Bio,” its first season averaged a 1.2 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 3.7 million total viewers in live-plus-seven-days of delayed viewing data from Nielsen.
