Netflix Options Guillermo del Toro's 'The Boy in the Iron Box' for New Horror Series
Image
Guillermo del Toro is known for creating some of the best and unique works of dark fantasy we've ever seen, and he's at it again with a new Netflix series that's based on a collection of "little stories" he wrote with author Chuck Hogan. Known as The Boy in the Iron Box, there are six novellas in total in the saga, which were published through Amazon's Original Stories initiative last year, and have now been optioned by Netflix.

Per What's on Netflix, the streaming giant is hoping to bring del Toro and Hogan's work to life, as the duo have found success with other shows such as FX's The Strain, which was based on a series of books they previously collaborated on. Everything is still in the very early stages of development, so no promises are being made at this point, but we do know that The Boy...

‘The Strain’: Why Was Guillermo del Toro’s Vampire TV Show Not Renewed for Season 5?
Image
The early 2010s in the television landscape were more of an experimental space, undergoing a seismic shift. The success of shows like The Walking Dead had proven that even the horror genre could thrive on the small screen, paving the way for a wave of genre-defining series. Among these was Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain, a visceral, blood-soaked vampire thriller that premiered on FX in July 2014.

Created by del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan, and helmed by showrunner Carlton Cuse, the series was based on their novel trilogy of the same name. A vampire thriller combined with de Toro’s signature blend of grotesque creature design, mythological depth, and juicy storyline, The Strain was a show designed for modern audiences fond of the genre.

From its initial days to its tantalizing ending, the series delivered a chilling narrative about a viral outbreak in New York City. For four seasons,...

Guillermo del Toro is busy with Netflix’s Frankenstein now, but the filmmaker’s most underrated monster work is The Strain. The FX TV show ran for four seasons and explored a world affected by a vampire virus. It was based on del Toro’s novel series, which he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan.

One of the most popular characters in the franchise is Quinlan, the vampire-human hybrid son of The Master and his arch-nemesis. While fans thought Vaun was Quinlan, actor Rupert Penry-Jones joined the show as the vampire/human in season 2. However, the actor was reportedly hesitant to play the role when he went through the novels.

“You cannot be postmodern about these”: Guillermo Del Toro’s 11-Year-Old Vampire Story Is Proof Why George R.R. Martin Wants Him Next
Image
Guillermo del Toro may have won his previous Oscar for Pinocchio, but the filmmaker has always been attracted to monsters, vampires, ghosts, and the like. The Pan’s Labyrinth director has long been known for his love for the genre and his various works, making him a sort of King of the Macabre.

He has dealt with ghosts, sea monsters, kaijus, Hellboy, and will be working on Frankenstein next. He has also worked with vampires on the FX series The Strain, which is based on a series of novels he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan. Del Toro’s commitment to staying true to the lore of vampires is what made George R.R. Martin approach him for his own vampire story.

“It’s almost like plastic surgery on your kid”: Guillermo del Toro Understood ‘Hellboy’ Creator’s Pain After His Own Vampire Novel Was Adapted for TV
Image
Adapting stories for television is always a tough job, and Guillermo del Toro finally understood what it’s like to have his own creation changed and adjusted for a new medium. He notably helmed 2004’s Hellboy, which was loved not only by fans but also by its creator, Mike Mignola.

Unfortunately, they didn’t see eye to eye on the sequel movie. The director changed the character so much that he told Mignola it’s his own version. Del Toro got a taste of his own medicine after his novel was adapted to the small screen.

DC Fumbled Badly With Batman Because Acting is Not the Best Thing Ben Affleck Does in Hollywood
Image
Actor Ben Affleck is one of the finest artists in the industry who has managed to succeed not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter, producer, and director. Affleck, along with best friend and frequent collaborator Matt Damon, rose to prominence with their movie Good Will Hunting, in which they not only starred but also co-wrote the script. Following the success of the movie, Affleck soon established himself as the leading man, starring in movies including Armageddon, Reindeer Games, Hollywoodland, Gone Girl, Argo, and others.

“If Scorsese can make a three-and-a-half-hour movie, I want to”: Iconic 15-Year-Old Ben Affleck Movie With the Most Iconic Heist Scene Was Almost an Erotic Thriller
Image
Ben Affleck’s Hollywood career is a fascinating case study in terms of its erratic rise and fall over nearly 3 decades. Since his Oscar-winning debut in Good Will Hunting, Affleck has been a golden property for the industry despite his intermittent stretches of bad moviemaking choices mingling with the good.

The success of Good Will Hunting and Chasing Amy was followed by a drastic downfall due to Gigli and Daredevil. This, in turn, was once again turned into a success with Gone Baby Gone, Argo, The Town, and Gone Girl before Affleck’s career fell into a rut with Batman v Superman and Live by Night.

However, the 2010 film, The Town almost turned one of Affleck’s stretches of success into a bad call for all the actors involved.

Ben Affleck's $154M Crime Thriller From 15 Years Ago Is Trending On Streaming & It's Still One Of His Best Movies
Image
2010’s The Town is currently trending on Hulu and remains one of Ben Affleck’s best crime thrillers. Though the popular director’s Oscar win with Argo can often overshadow his other films, Affleck's early crime movies hold their weight against his recent releases. The Town was the actor’s second adapted screenplay and director role, helping establish Affleck’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s most skilled players.

Arguably one of the best heist movies, The Town presents a nuanced performance where he portrays a criminal in Charlestown aching for a way out. Doug McRay’s life comes spiraling out when, after robbing a bank, he falls in love with the woman aiding the FBI to pin his friend to the crime. The Town’s theatrical and alternate endings have the tension escalate and live up to the rest of the film, which is now a streaming stand-out even after 15 years.

2 Of Ben Affleck’s Best Movies Of The 2010s Are Dominating Streaming
Image
Two of Ben Affleck's best movies of the 2010s have landed on a major streaming chart. Ben Affleck is a major movie star whose works have cumulatively grossed more than $6 billion worldwide. Although he began his career as a child actor and starred in well-known early 1990s projects including Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused, his breakout role came when he and Matt Damon co-wrote and co-starred in the 1997 Gus Van Sant movie Good Will Hunting, which earned them a joint Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Other Ben Affleck and Matt Damon collaborations have hit screens since their original success, including The Last Duel, Dogma, and Air. However, Affleck has also become well-known outside of that partnership, both as an actor and director. One of his most prominent onscreen roles has been playing Batman in DC Extended Universe movies including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Image
Exclusive: Will Smith is exiting his co-starring role in upcoming action movie Sugar Bandits.

We understand Smith and his production company Westbrook will remain producers on the big-budget project, which was due to begin filming in coming months but had stalled due to uncertainty over Smith’s on-screen commitment.

We hear that Smith is exiting as an actor due to scheduling conflicts. It’s not immediately clear, however, which, if any, project is being fast-tracked for the A-lister.

“I would never have had the balls to do what he did”: The Superhuman Stunts Jeremy Renner Did for a $154M Movie Were Impossible for Even Batman Star Ben Affleck
Image
The recent years have not been kind to Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner. After their fiercely successful respective Hollywood careers spanning 25+ years and each enjoying a spot at the peak, for such tragedy and misery to befall both actors within 2 years of each other is nearly unheard of.

For Ben Affleck, his misery pertains more to the romantic/personal aspect of his life, as reports of his second breakup and first divorce from Jennifer Lopez flood the internet exactly 2 years after the celebrity couple got hitched. For Jeremy Renner, his fate is a bit more tragic and much more deserving of the public’s undying sympathies.

And yet, beyond the haze of nightmarish accidents and déjà vu breakups, one thread ties both Oscar-worthy actors together under a single title: The Town.

Will Smith’s Sugar Bandits finds a director in Stefano Sollima
Image
Earlier this year, it was reported that Will Smith will continue his career damage control with a rare venture into indie territory with the action thriller Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.” With the film being put up at the European Film Market, which predominantly puts smaller films on display, the $80 million price tag makes the Will Smith vehicle the biggest movie at the show.

As the Cannes market event approaches, Deadline is reporting that Smith’s Westbrook Studios and AGC Studios have tapped Italian director Stefano Sollima to sit in the director’s seat for the vigilante thriller. Sollima is no stranger to dark crime content as he has also helmed films like Sicario: Day of the Soldado,...

Will Smith Starring In Action Thriller Sugar Bandits
Image
Looking to keep his post-Oscar slap career resuscitation on more of an upward arc following the under-seen Emancipation, Will Smith is adding a new action thriller to his To Do list. He's now attached to star in Sugar Bandits.

This is a film that has been in development at Universal for a few years now; Joe Carnahan was rumoured to direct back in 2013, but he's nowhere to be found in Variety's story on Smith's jumping aboard.

Chuck Hogan, who worked on The Town and TV's The Strain remains attached, adapting his novel Devils In Exile. The script will focus on an Iraq War veteran named Neal Maven (Smith) who returns from the conflict with little hope of a good job or a satisfying future.

He teams up with a group of fellow vets to target the ill-gotten gains of Boston's drug trade, putting them firmly into the crosshairs of criminal types.
